Pope says Jews aren’t to blame for death of Christ

‘How could the entire Jewish people have been present at this moment to call for the death of Jesus?’

Pope Benedict XVI has personally exonerated Jews in the death of Christ in a new book. Though the Vatican has for decades taught Jews were not responsible for killing Jesus, certain Bible passages have long been thought to lay the blame on Jewish people as a whole. “St Matthew attributes the request for the crucifixion of Jesus to ‘all the people’. But he cannot be stating a historical fact: how could the entire Jewish people have been present at this moment to call for the death of Jesus?” Benedict writes in Jesus of Nazareth. “The historical reality appears in St John and St Mark. The true accusers were those circulating in the temple at the time (the priestly hierarchy).”

Pope says Jews aren’t to blame for death of Christ

  1. I just couldn't understand and fathom where all those hatred for Jews came from. Why it has been perpetuated by some religion, is just beyond lunacy.

    • i concur

  3. This is but a drop in the bucket of some important issues the church needs to address, and only the most devote might have their opinion changed if they did harbor ill will toward Jews. From what I've seen, Jew haters hate because they want to, not because they can assign their hate solely on a 2,000 grudge.

And if I were Jewish, I'd probably live my life without guilt about it anyway, and I might even be a tad resentful I needed to be forgiven and that another religion now had official reason to stop hating me

  5. The Bible is actually quite clear that the Romans did it, and yet Jews have had 2000 years of misery over this stupidity.

    • Barrabas or Jesus? I recall the crowd choosing Barrabas.

      • Roman crowd.

They were both in Roman custody.

        • The fact is the french did it, and blamed the jews whom they always hated because the Jews, unlike canadians, made them work for their money, and laughed at their cultureless culture.!

          • did you forget to take your meds again?

          • There is solid evidence that he did exist. Just as frank mckenna and cretin existed, and with the same spin doctor great man evidence! In fact, that is where governments learned that les persons, believe anything. Interesting how the catlicks have kept his body hid for so many years though. The """Tombs""" of da vatican.

          • hahaha, Thats so funny! How did you, ever think of that saying?? lol, haha. I must try and remember dat.

      • you were there ?

        • wee's, me was there, l'autre moi! But i not sure I can tell stories as well as these fantasy believer bunch of all weird stripes. My ape ancestors are laughing their ass off. Tis hoping I know whoms to pray too as I'ms dying. Las week I caught myself praying for the neighbours wife. WOW! It worked! Miricles do'es happen!

      • According to the new Testament, the event occurred on the day after the Last Supper (the first night of Passover). By Jewish Law the next day is a day of prayer and NO work or public activities of any kind. So there could not have any Jews on the streets at that time.
But there were a number of people who were not circumcised who claimed to still be Jewish, like Herod. They not permitted to enter the Temple Ground. The Romans forced their entry.
Many Jewish protesters, including Jesus, demanded that the Law against the uncircumcised be enforced.
They did not want to expel the" MONEY CHANGERS" but the uncircumcised.
Interestingly, the first CHRISTIANS were all circumcised males and the expansion of Christianity proposed by Paul was voted on in 69 A.D. in Jerusalem and the proposal to expand to the Uncircumcised was carried by One vote.
Many of these first Christian reverted to being Jewish who like Jesus were observant.
It did seem to be abandoning the very principles that Jesus was protesting in favour of.
Paul was the second greatest marketer of all time, modifying his product to maximize sales-something Moses never did.

  10. in the spirit of open mind…..if one ponders the roots of hate and other destructive human emotion…much of it is within the words of this book, the bible, including other divisive guilt ridden literature…. may books written by john steinbeck be our holey and influential literature ….and about this condescending person they call pope… the media has given him the speakers corner and moral authority to say what is and what isn't…as if we are ill equipped to be ones own person and maintain rightful control over humanities collective pathetic meaningless lives….as peanuts said to his dog…eat my shorts!

  12. What boggles my brain about this, is that among Christians (why with mostly European origin?), it's not the religious that hates Jews. And for Islam, I wonder why is their such hatred for Jews and other Non Islam (Or infidels) believers that has been carried, remembered, and nourished for thousand of years? It even predates the writing of the Koran, let alone the establishment of Israel. Why is hate so insidious and so overwhelming that it rots societies that adhere and surrender to its call?

    • @Ariadane:
Your understanding of history is poor.
Islam came into being around 640 AD plus or minus a few decades so Islam was not around for the 'thousands' of years nourishing hate of the Jews. But I nit pick

      • Look it up again: 'thousand'.
While you are it, I have not looked far that long nor an expert in history, kindly tell me where , when, why, and how all this hate started, and why is it carried over to now and up to who knows when?

  14. There is mounting evidence that historical Jesus did not exist. So Pope Ben giving a pardon after 2000 years seems rather silly indeed.

    • So why not add that Mohammed did not exist to your stupid comment? Or Buddha

      • Reliable evidence for a historical Jesus does not exist and all claims of Jesus
derive from hearsay accounts. No one has the slightest physical evidence to
support a historical Jesus; no artifacts, dwelling, works of carpentry, or self-
written manuscripts. All claims about Jesus derive from writings of other people.
There occurs no contemporary Roman record that shows Pontius Pilate executing a
man named Jesus. Devastating to historians, there occurs not a single contemporary
writing that mentions Jesus. All documents about Jesus got written well after the
life of the alleged Jesus from either: unknown authors, people who had never met
an earthly Jesus, or from fraudulent, mythical or allegorical writings. Hearsay
means information derived from other people rather than on a witness' own
knowledge. Whereas the two other gentlemen you reference there does in fact exist verifiable records.

      • Because we are addressing the issue of Jesus and not Mohammed or Buddha, and he makes a rather relevant point. It's a simple google search if you wish to educate yourself. Or you can blithely call his remark stupid of course and remain ignorant.

  16. The fact is the french did it, and blamed the jews whom they always hated because the Jews, unlike canadians, made them work for their money, and laughed at their cultureless culture.!

  17. And the lord said, hate your enemy, not their sin, because you may need to use it some time. Go forth and control da flow, of oil. Et cum spirt tuo.

    • @John:
Would have saved the world a whole lot of grief if a pope cleared up this matter a thousand years ago.

  21. Wait, what? I thought the Bible was the Word of God! How can there possibly be contradictory statements about anything in this infallible document??? *Brainsplosion*

  24. But, like in kanada, they didn't know how to speaky la language, so just inserted anythings like they do's here. I means, we all believe in all da stuffs the french tell us nows! Not one original text of jesus saying ever survived. Then da fun begins! Like stats canada! lol

  33. Whoa, why doesn't the Pope call it like it was–it was, after all, the Romans that crucified him. All these centuries they've hidden behind the anti-semitic shield. Isn't it time Il Papa –or whatever his German moniker–'fessed up that since the prior Benedict who started the persecution of the Jews in Western Europe, the church has been complicit in the rather odd blaming of the Jews–rather odd because it's quite clear from the Bible and the Nicean/Apostles creed that it was the Romans that did the deed–"suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died….etc."–Sorry, old Pontius is, I believe, a gentile if there ever was one. Might we perhaps start with a crucifiction of Berlusconi, as the personification of the Italian state for starters?

  37. As a Jew, I just want to go on the record and say that actually we did conspire to kill Jesus. All of us were in on it. We still have a chuckle or two about it at Passover, 2000 years later. Now you know. ;)

  41. ….. I thought we were all to blame, that he died for the sins of everyone existing at the time and for all of us to date? He was supposed to die wasn't he? How can you blame anyone for his death if that was the whole shtick? And besides… he didn't die anyways. He rose from the grave and ascended to heaven…. depending on who's version of Christianity you wish to believe. Or not.
