New law puts restrictions on free toys with unhealthy restaurant food
San Francisco is the first major American city to pass a law putting restrictions on the free toys handed out to kids with unhealthy restaurant meals, Reuters reports. The law, which takes effect on Dec. 1, requires that kids’ meals meet nutritional standards before toys can be handed out along with them. The National Restaurant Association and McDonalds have opposed the law, and McDonalds spokesperson Dayna Proud said in a statement that, “We are extremely disappointed with today’s decision. It’s not what our customers want, nor is it something they asked for. Getting a toy with a kid’s meal is just one part of a fun, family experience at McDonalds.” Toys can still be handed out with kids’ meals that have less than 600 calories, come with fruits and vegetables, and include drinks without too much fat or sugar.
