‘Star-crossed lovers’

One half of formerly jailed Malawi gay couple ‘moves in with a woman’

Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, the Malawi gay couple who were sentenced to 14 years’ hard labour in May for their sexual orientation, have reportedly split up. According to the BBC, Monjeza announced he is now with
a woman named Dorothy Gulo. In May, the couple was freed following international condemnation for Malawi’s anti-homosexuality laws. Now, Peter Tatchell, a human rights advocate who campaigned for the release of the
couple, said anti-gay pressure had split the “star-crossed lovers.” He added: “It is a tragedy that homophobic threats and abuse have forced this couple apart.”
