Stephen Harper expresses concern about escalating violence in Ukraine

COLONGNE, Germany – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has expressed concern about the escalating violence in Ukraine.

Harper made a mid-flight statement to the media shortly after his plane took off from Amman, Jordan, en route to Ottawa following his first visit to the Middle East.

The prime minister said the Conservative government is concerned by the “growing political conflict and violence” in Ukraine.

He added , however, that Canada understands why Ukrainians are resorting to violence given the actions of their current government “very much remind them of their anti-democratic and Soviet past.”

Harper added the government shares those concerns, and supports an immediate emergency debate in the House of Commons on the Ukrainian situation.

The prime minister also said Canada will continue to work with its allies and partners to determine an appropriate response.

Harper’s plane stopped in Germany for refuelling before the final leg of the flight home.

News reports said anti-government protesters seized a regional administration building Saturday, and officials warned police could storm the Kyiv city hall to free two policemen allegedly captured by demonstrators.

Protesters have occupied the city hall for nearly two months and turned it into a makeshift dormitory and headquarters.

The city hall is near both the site of protracted clashes between police and protesters over the past week and Independence Square, where demonstrators have set up an extensive tent camp and conducted round-the-clock protests since early December.

Stephen Harper expresses concern about escalating violence in Ukraine

  1. I wouldn’t suppose the 68% disapproval rating for dear steve has anything to do with asking for a debate, would it ? Nigel Wright was the man who ran the conservative government, not harper, now they have Dimitri, and now they(cons) will be on their heels until 2015. The harper cons are in over there heads.

    • Give us better choices on the ballot, and Steve would be unemployed. Problem is that statism loving Mulcair and statism loving Trudeau are just name changes.

We need better choices on the ballot that are not just statism government back room puppets managing us with deceit for our money. We need a party that is for less corruption, less bailouts, less waste, less money for nothing and less taxing. No option like this exists on the media/back room controlled ballots we get.

      • I couldn’t agree more. Ayn Rand for PM 2015!!!

      • “We need a party that is for less corruption, less bailouts, less waste, less money for nothing and less taxing”
So, you’re against Welfare, EI, CPP, OAS, and some immigration policies then?

  2. But Stephan Harper isn’t concerned about retired, disabled, and working poverty in Canada, as 1% raises in 10% inflation we are just to be ignored.

Maybe Harper should be more concerned on how he manages Canada and less on giving away our money on road trips and how he might get Canada in a war somewhere.

After all with so many young unemployed, governments in US and Canada seem to want a war as historically large numbers of unemployed young is a good way to stop the social problem government created.

I am a staunch small c conservative, but I have been totally disenfranchised with the Conservative corrupt party of Canada. They could do a lot of good, but chose the statism wasteful ways, deceive us like the other parties and are not conservative at all.

Just wish we had better choices on our statism rigged ballot.

    • Well vote Liberal in 2015. Oh wait a minute, it was the Liberals who sent us to Afghanistan and the Conservative who are pulling us out.

      • Pretty sure members of NATO are expected to participate in NATO missions. But maybe someone will believe what you’ve written.

        • Your talking to the choir Patch, I’ve done two tours in KAF. If you read Dave’s rant, he would have us believe that the CPC sent us there instead and wants to find another war for Canada to be involve in..

  3. Canada understands why Ukrainians are resorting to violence given the actions of their current government “very much remind them of their anti-democratic and Soviet past.”

Then he must understand this could happen here for the same reasons.

    • Some felt the same way with Chretien and Trudeau. At least here you’ll be able to vote foe whom ever you please in 2015.

  4. Just another attempt to “change the channel.” This problem has been ongoing. It was a problem long before Harper went away on his little love fest. He only cares now so politicians will have to talk about something other than his gov’ts scandals.
