Court agrees Khadr’s rights are being violated
The Supreme Court of Canada has overturned a lower court decision to force the Canadian government to bring Omar Khadr back to Canada from Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. military prison where he is being held. However, the top court has also ruled that Canada continues to violate Khadr’s Charter rights, the CBC reports. The court’s unanimous decision declared that Canadian officials breached the 23-year-old’s right to life, liberty, and security of person, but found that ordering the government to demand Khadr’s return might interfere with the Canadian government’s jurisdiction over foreign relations. Born in Toronto, Khadr has been imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay since he was 15, accused of throwing a grenade that killed an American soldier in Afghanistan.
