Team Russia kicked off airplane

Allegedly drunk World Junior hockey champs grounded in Buffalo

The World Junior Russian hockey team was scheduled to fly home today after last night’s 5-3 gold medal win over Canada. Instead, the team is sobering up at a Days Hotel near Buffalo-Niagara International Airport. The team was kicked off their Delta flight this morning because members of the team were intoxicated, WGRZ News reports. The team’s general manager is arranging new travel plans.

Team Russia kicked off airplane

  1. I am Canadian, born in Russia. That was a great game. I am sorry for Canadian team, but sport is sport and lets say "next time". But how the Russian team behave after the game and what they screaming in TV camers-JUST DISGUSTING. Thanks God the most Canadians did not understand that dirty words. Low class people . They will never look like the best russian players in the past. SHAME.

    • I think the responsibility for this outburst should rest more on the coaches for the lack of discipline instilled in the players.

  2. I am a Russian-Canadian too and I don't think what they were screaming was so bad. It was mostly things like:

    "What's the score!?"
    "F*ck yes, f*ck yes, f*ck yes, YESSSSS!!!!!!!"
    "Russians never surrender!"
"I am champion mama, I am champion!"
    "I F*cking love you mama!"
    "Russia is the Chamption"

    etc….

It was mostly funny ; )

    • Andrey, you think this sort of language is acceptable in a civilized society?

      • We're talking hockey players, for God's sake. They're not choir boys. Lighten up.

        • Some really jealous Canadians on the blog They kicked But! WTG Russia!

    • Andrey you're and f*ing idiot. Now how funny is that to you?

  3. I'm Canadian, no connection to Russia, but if I just won World Junior gold, you could bet that I'd be having a few drinks. And even though I didn't know what they were saying, I was assuming that they weren't screaming anything offensive to the cameras. The song that the Americans sang last year after winning gold, on the other hand, was disgraceful. Cheers to the Russians for never giving up.

    • Thats the truth there Adam.

      • What did they sing?

    • Actually, getting so drunk that you have to get kicked off a plane is almost as impressive as winning the gold. BRAVO, my boys! BRAVO!

      • Look, they aren't so different from us after all!

  4. How sad that they have to run a win with child like drunken behaviour! Looks good on them!

    • This is really random and weird…. where did Suze ever say anything about Harper? Get a life!

  5. I am happy for Russian junior team!
Remember Canadian women hockey team when they start drinking champagne right after they got gold? It happens…

    • Yes, I remember and they deserved to celebrate their win too! This whole business of holding athletes to a standard that no alcohol-imbibing person has ever met (are you telling me that you have never tied one on) is ridiculous. I heard Alexander Ovechchkin supplied the vodka. Maybe that is just a rumor. At any rate, their win is good for international competition. Where were the cheerleaders?

    • I don't think however they were cursing at the cameras.

  6. The next sentence must be read with a straight face followed by a big grin at the end>>>

I am slightly suprised that they didn't go full "Rock Star" out and level the hotel to the ground ehehehehe, just kidding.

A bit of training in cultural differences will do this team good but that comes with time and experience. I hope when they win next year their behavior will be adjusted to the enviroment.

Congrats to my Russian comrades and good job to Canadians they did their best.

    • People shocked? Offended? get a life! This is HOCKEY PASSION…so for all those years that people on this side of the pond said Russians don't have and play with passion…sit up and pay attention. One of the best coaches in history – a Russian…once said "Russia will never beat Canada at this game until they learn that passion and heart wins every time." Well? They JUST DID. Eat it and weep. They pushed beyond…reached deep and came up with a 5 goal comeback to win Gold against Canada. That's THE CANADIAN GAME. They learned…they played…and they won – The Canadian Way / The Russian Way, now. Hooligans? I think Champions…just like our boys are inside as well. Next series Russia better wipe those grins and reach as deep again..because they must – to ever beat us again. Glove tossed back at 'em and KODOS for this battle. Russian Mamas?…Your boys made you proud – and that's all they were saying to the cameras. They deserve every respect and salute – this time. Hockey is way more than a game – It's a Heart Builder and Character honer. Check your table manners at the door folks. This is Friendly War. It's competition and triumph of the highest order. The Canadian team knows one thing for next series…only one. They need to re-train and step up to the next face off…because it's coming again. My money's on Canada next series – we dislike losing …ever. Watch your rear Russia – you're in our road. But for now…Revel in it. Your young vibrant men deserve your adoration!

  7. Celebrate your victory, drink , sing, shout, dance, barf, etc. but remember there is a place and time – but not at altitude 30,000 ft. in a closed cabin with other passengers. Charter your own private plane next time.

    • They never made it off the ground! Maybe because it was 0615 hrs! They left the plane at the request of the pilot and checked into a hotel to sleep it off. They were drunk but not obnoxious and no police were necessary.

  8. Don't you have to be under 21 to play in the World Juniors? Don't you have to be at least 21 to drink in the US? I'm all about a party, but not sure if that's the best way to do it on foreign soil… just sayin'

    • How old are most US and Canadian solders in Afganistan?

  9. russia teammates winning gold should hold heads up with dignity.. to act this way is disgraceful!

    • oh pffffffft, this was the biggest event in these guys lives. Obviously they will drink, they are happy teens who just became champions (and for the record, in Russia they never check your ID when selling you alcohol, so youngsters start drinking when they are 14 – from personal experience. I'm not saying it's right, but just making a point that it's not the first time these guys drank alcohol). Let the boys have some fun. Yes, maybe they should have waited and held their horses until they got home, BUT I think after all the hard work they put in, they do deserve a little party :) Not like they were smashing glassware and kicking the crap out of hotel rooms, just had a little too much to drink.. :)

  10. The manager had them flying out the morning after the evening championship game? Were they expecting to lose?

    • no, it was just Christmas in Russia, and I'm sure they just wanted to get home.

  11. Congratulations to Russia for a game well played! Any team which makes my jaw dropped and made me want to tear my hair out, is worth those celebration. I remembered the Canadian women team's famous celebration, I believe they have nothing to be ashamed in celebrating that win. With Russian team, it should have been expected that they would celebrate – I would. For Canada's team, congratulations for the silver, there will always be next year.

  12. What al bunch of Chicken Littles who have never achieved the type of greatness these kids did. Didn't a Canadian girls team have a few dirnks after a game and the tight-assed crowd whined like hell. This is a society that promotes booze–just look at our universities. They can grow up later. They won. We lost. Get over it.

    • Hey fella, RIGHT ON

    • People shocked? Offended? get a life! This is HOCKEY PASSION…so for all those years that people on this side of the pond said Russians don't have and play with passion…sit up and pay attention. Foreign soil My Ass This is WORLD HOCKEY. The winners should be given their OWN aircraft to go home in luxury.

  13. There is some spin here I'm afraid. Read the link from WGRZ. There is no anecdotal evidence of players being rowdy on the flight itself, nor were the celebrations the previous night a cause for concern for police. In fact, at the hotel at 5am, a couple reported "… members of the Russian team were clearly intoxicated, but polite and not behaving in a disorderly manner."

Like many others, I was cheering for Canada, but Russia deserved the win based on the third period play. I wonder if Team Canada or Team USA would have been subjected to the same scrutiny ? Wait until 2013 in Russia for payback !

    • Yup..I'm thinking maybe Buffalo wasn't the Best place to fly out of. Regardless of the "rules' my cynicism is that there's a little Yankee Dooding going on here. Canadians at least understand victory intoxication. Hope the young team just laughs it off and opens a few more behind friendly doors.

  14. Delta Airlines may expect no Russian passengers in the near future.

  15. In a plane you follow the rules or get lost, win or no win

  16. Hey Madeyoulook
They wanted to get home for their Cultural Christmas celebrations. As for condeming them for getting drunk after winning a hard fought International competition … get real. Fact!!! They were RUSSIANS being prevented from BOARDING an AMERICAN flight by the American flight crew. Probably had too much liquid in their bags.

    • Hey Tagg…. in the future if you want to comment to a specific person just click on the bottom left corner of their post where it says '' Reply '' and guess what ? It does.!

  17. It was frustrating to watch team Canada melt down…but put this into context. We're in the finals 10 times in a row (believe that's the number)…miss the gold only a couple times…and what: we're upset? We are an amazing hockey nation and every now and then there will be a hiccup. I'm happy for Russia, but if you look at their overall position in the hockey globe, this is but a pleasant hiccup for them (lots of pleasant hiccups if you count the airport fiasco!).

I'm thinking that this loss will help every team Canada player avoid letting emotions get in the way when they mature into future NHLers. They now know (in spades) what can happen when you lose control the emotional side of the game.

I love this tournament as it puts on display the future stars of the game…I'm glad to see that a good number of them (more than any other individual country) will come from Canada.

Time to suck up the loss and move on!

  18. It would have been just as silly if Air Canada …and people would still have their varied reactions. At the Best Game In The World -They beat the best …so for now they are the best…for now. ;-)

  19. They are Russians – what do you expect. Russians drink – that's what they do!!

    • And they beat Canadians as well …

  20. My Russian employee did translate the Russian words spoken by the Russian players. There needs to be a code of conduct set for all players. Playing off home turf brings its challenges but this needs to be part of the code of conduct – be honourable and expect home turf sports fans to be obnoxious but hold yourself to a high standard. You made it to a world class team so be a world class sports star.
My Russian employee tells me that is why she left is that this hooliganism is in all parts of life and the treatment of women is terrible. Women do not want to marry any more as the husband treats the wife so poorly.
Putin himself demonstrates the thuggish behaviour within Russia and Georgia and then with his treatment of top business men criticizing him and finally, within his own domestic circle with his wife and the gymnast.
Russia's loss as my Russian employee is marrying a delightful Canadian who respects her and will not be treating her poorly as demonstrated by the leader of her old country. Looking at low birth rates, Russia and Italy have the lowest replacement rates and it could be to do with security of women and how their males behave towards them.

  21. Unfortunately for Canadian hockey fans in this game the best team clearly won. After all isn't that what it's all about, the best team winning. Let's not get too upset. The loss of a hockey game isn't the end of the world. I have confidence that Canada will be challenging for gold again next time around. My thanks to both teams for providing a good night's entertainment.

  22. Sportsmanship is true class.
The Russian team needs to learn to portray themselves as first class.
Now, they represent the lowest class of sporstmanship. They have shamed the sport.
Coaches need to discipline their teams. The swearing on television and getting kicked off the plane shows
their mentality. sorry for these boys.

  23. I agree! Yesss!! I think gold medals should go to Sale and Pelletier!

  24. so they celebrated a huge win over their long-time hockey nemesis….big deal.
i sure as heck would've too.
everybody that is so anti-drinking oughta lighten up and give these boys a break.

as for team canada, you played so darn well throughout the entire championship, and it was really a treat to watch.
take that fateful final 20 as a lesson, move on, and next time go give it to 'em for the full 60!

    thanks for an awesome tournament!
