The Thomson family is the richest of them all in Canada, topping Canadian Business magazine’s annual Rich 100 list.

The Thomsons, who own Thomson Reuters and Woodbridge Co. (which include most of the Globe and Mail and The Winnipeg Jets) are worth a whopping $20.1 billion.

Despite their billions, the family’s fortune actually dropped 5.7 per cent since last year, amid advertising declines at the Globe and Mail and struggles at Eikon, a financial information services provider.

Coming in at No. 2 is Galen Weston, who owns George Weston Ltd., Loblaw Cos. and Holt Renfrew. He’s worth an estimated $8.2 billion.

Rounding out the top five on the list are:

  • 3. $8.07 billion – J.K., Arthur and the late John Irving; Irving Oil Ltd. and JD Irving Ltd.
  • 4. $6.41 billion – Rogers family; Rogers Communications Inc.
  • 5. $6.14 billion – Jimmy Pattison; Jim Pattison Group
