Canada prefers meeting with U.S. without Mexico: WikiLeaks

Mexico may be Canada’s trilateral partner according to NAFTA, but diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks reveal that Canadian politicians and diplomats prefer dealing with their American neighbours without the Mexicans present. Ottawa’s relations with Mexico have wavered recently, following Canada’s implementation of entry restrictions on Mexicans, and the violent deaths of Canadians traveling in Mexico. “Canada remains at times concerned that trilateralism comes at the expense of its bilateral relationship with the United States,” wrote the U.S. embassy in Mexico in a leaked briefing to U.S. President Barack Obama before the “Three Amigos” talks in Guadalajara, Mexico.
