WAKEFIELD, Que. – Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says Canadians shouldn’t expect any new direction from him in the upcoming throne speech in October.
While the Harper government is getting ready to reset the agenda for the 2015 election campaign, Flaherty says his focus remains unchanged — and that is balancing the budget.
He says he will do whatever it takes to reach the 2015 balance-budget target, including a new round of cutbacks if necessary.
However, Flaherty says Ottawa does have enough room to play a role in reconstruction efforts for two recent disasters — the Lac-Megantic train derailment and the Alberta floods.
Flaherty spoke to reporters prior to meeting business leaders and academics at a policy retreat outside Ottawa.
On the housing front, Flaherty says he is monitoring the situation but does not plan any further interventions.
