Toilet paper caper

Thanks to China, your TP is about to cost more—or feel a whole lot worse

Ever wonder what happens to the crisp, white office paper you use at work to print out silly pics of your co-workers’ faces Photoshopped on onto Lady Gaga’s body? Well, it used to go to North American recycling plants where it was made into pillowy-soft toilet paper. But the Chinese have recently entered the market for office wastepaper with a vengeance, carting the stuff back to the Middle Kingdom by container ship for the benefit of Sino posteriors. Which leaves us Westerners shelling out more for the soft stuff. Or resorting to lower grade paper that, at bottom, is not so nice.

  1. Or finding a use for the vast amounts of lumber that currently isnt finding a buyer because of slowdown in construction an US anti-import legislation in flagrant violation of NAFTA

  2. I recall travelling in India many years back and being able to read the newspaper headlines on the toilet roll once the toilet paper was all used up.

Maybe some of the idled plants in the old manufacturing belt should be turning out bowel towel for the rest of the nation. Hey, there's a business opportunity for an involuntarily retired former MP from Alberta who has been in the news lately. Maybe he'll offer me a contingency fee!

  4. most people don't use recycled toilet paper ..we use toilet paper made from old growth forests …why don't they figure out how to add other plants into it …everybody knows trees are very slow growing …hemp on the other hand grows like a weed

  5. Then they are kind enough to send the used toilet paper product back to us as furniture made from engineered compressed wood. Or is that what was causing the illness from the drywall they shipped that is now being torn out of houses in the southern states that was shipped from there.

    • Yeah, lets produce more pressboard crap furniture. On the east coast, TP is made from low-grade hardwoods (poplar and birch) which seems to me a might more sustainable and eco-friendly than shipping used paper halfway across the world.

  6. i can just see cornholio saying " i need TP for my bunghole "
