Tories misquoted her to defend summit costs, AG says

Report on G8/G20 summits recycles quote praising Liberals post 9/11

Auditor General Sheila Fraser is alleging the Conservatives misused a quote by her in a report on the costs of the G8/G20 summits in Toronto last summer. The quote read: “We found that the processes and controls around that were very good, and that the monies were spent as they were intended to be spent.” The statement dates back to a CBC News interview in 2010, when Fraser was asked about security spending by a previous Liberal government after 9/11, and not in regards to the summits. In a scathing letter, Fraser writes: “The comments attributed to me in the [Conservative] report are completely unrelated to G8/G20 spending.”

  1. Thats how they roll. Take a comment about the liberals, cut and paste it as their own, take credit for liberal regulations for our banking system. Is there no end to these tactics and misleading the Canadian public. Talk about 'do anything for power'. Harper proves it every day.

There is simply no depth to which this sleaze ball party wont sink.

    • To be fair, there's no evidence Harper had anything to do with this. On the other hand, the principle of ministerial accountability (which they have propounded in the past) suggests the buck stops with him and his ministry.

    • If he's got an ounce of sense in him, he'd avoid trying to label Sheila Fraser as a partisan liberal hack. She's got street cred with the people. Significantly more than any politician, including the PM himself.

    • You actually think he had any knowledge whatsoever about some quote in an obscure report. Yes he's acountable but there are dummies here who believe he wrote this.

      • The Minority Report was written by the Conservatives on the committee. I find it amazing that before making such an outrageous breach of ethics they wouldn't seek approval from further up the food chain. Alternatively, the MP's involved sought out advice about how to counter the damaging content of the committee's report and the PMO came up with this beaut. This is one that can be blamed on some junior staff, the way they usually do.

    • I'm sure it was a draft quote from the CPC. We should wait until the final quote is made public before we pass judgment.

      • I understood that this quote was used in a report that the government offficially tabled a month before the election, so it wouldn't be a draft.

        • Apologies, I forgot to include my 'snark' tags around that post.

      • LOL! Brilliant!

  11. Dear Canadians – You should be thankful for your political system vs. ours in the US. Remember our "Cash for Clunkers"? The US government paid cash incentives for people to destroy perfectly serviceable vehicles so they would buy new smaller cars? It is only a matter of time until they have us razing our houses to stimulate the economy (they are already market testing in Detroit). Then, we will live in our cars, in the albeit modest living area provided by an electric vehicle. And our government's corn-based ethanol subsidies .. burning our food for fuel .. didn't work for some reason (probably because it is not sufficiently nuanced). So we're worried they will try burning our meat and pastries next. We're going to end up starving in little cars. You should be on your knees, thanking The Queen Of England for saving you from your neighbor's suffering.

Sorry for the rant. On a more rational note, can you please invade Arizona and make us a colony? We will pray to your gods, sustain ourselves on your cuisine, and adopt your mannerisms and language(s) .. you won't even know we're here. It will be easy. Just see <a href="http://www.disunderstand.com” target=”_blank”>www.disunderstand.com for ideas on how you can enjoy year round golf. Thank you in advance for attacking us.

    • Sorry we sent all our spare invading forces to Libya to help the Muslim Brotherhood take over another country. But don't worry we have infiltrated Florida and Arizona with our old people and we will make our move as soon as we annex Alaska.

      • Do we have to take Saarh Palin or has she already been promised a show on Fox North?

      • Obit – We disunderstand why you are attacking Libya instead of Arizona. The population of Arizona and Libya are the same. The Climate is similar. So strategies would be similar. But in Arizona, we have about the same percentage of the population that speaks English as Canada. And we like Canadians, so we won't fight back (if asked, we will pre-surrender, like Detroit in 1812). We'll throw in complementary resort accommodations for your troops. Plus, you'll get a hockey team that used to be called the Jets. Please reconsider.

        • We'll take the jets, but you gotta take the flames…[ sorry guys. It's the old Oiler in me that refuses to die]

But can you subsist on our national dish…poutine?

          • Accepted. We have a Tim Hortons conveniently located in nearby Indiana, but they do not serve poutine. So, we take it on faith that poutine is nutritious and healthful. We will introduce new foods to our population through school lunch programs. We look forward to the attack.

          • Hilarious, the whole exchange.

We will launch a naval attack on Arizona commencing tomorrow.

  21. The draft report from the AG is a leaked, unofficial document and the final version may not be that damaging.

THIS, on the other hand, is clearly a fraudulent document, designed to dupe parliament and Canadians, by including a quote from the AG that was not related to the report. They tried to use her reputation to falsely make themselves look good.

I don't buy that it's a mistake. I think it's fraud. And I don't think the late retraction should be enough to save the CPC from punishment at the polls.

    • There's no way in hell it was an honest mistake. It was a deliberate fraud. It probably was done by a staffer, but it does speak to the culture of the party that these kinds of blatant lies and misrepresentations would even be considered let alone published in a report to Parliament.

    • The quote that was taken from a ten year old report and inserted in the Parliamentary Committee Minority (Conservative) Report looking into the G9/G20 spending not in this leaked AG document. No doubt the Conservatives tried to point to the quote from their own members' report to confuse the issue. And someone close to the top knew that it had been inserted given the speed at which it appeared.

      • From your – and Andrew's – response it seems I may not have been clear. I was contrasting this deliberate attempt to mislead with the leaked document that seems to be grabbing the bulk of the headlines.

I absolutely believe the minority report is a deliberate attempt by the CPC to deceive. Sorry if I confused things by starting off with a reference to the draft G8/G20 report.

        • You know what's sad.

In trying to come up with something positive from the AG, they had to reach all the way back to the Martin Liberals.

          • LOL! Too true!

  30. Leaders' debate issues — if they have the courage. Yes, the summit is a bad waste and will be hammered.
But what about Canada's wars in Afghanistan and Libya.
Back on April 2nd I posted "Want election controversy? Ask about the following:
If the Pentagon is betting its European allies can finish the job in Libya, why is Canada still involved?
I know, I know. Our bilingual Lt. Gen. Charles Bouchard is the newly appointed Nato operational attack force commander against Libya — from the safety of his headquarters in Naples, Italy — and our weak-kneed federal politicians, currently in the midst of an election, wouldn't dare speak out because they fear their shadows.
But aside from that rubbish, if the Pentagon is betting its European allies can finish the job, why is Canada still involved?
And what about Obama's war, Afghanistan, and Canadian billions and lots of dead Canuck soldiers?
Come on leaders, lets talk war.

    THE TRUTH:

“We found that the processes and controls around that were very good, and that the monies were spent as they were intended to be spent.”

Canada's auditor general in 2010 commenting on how the previous Liberal Government handled security spending (of OUR money) after 911.

    Enter HARPERLAND …

    THE LIE:

“We found that the processes and controls around that were very good, and that the monies were spent as they were intended to be spent.”

FALSELY claimed to be Canada's auditor general on G8/20 spending by the CONS.

    THE CONCLUSION:

    A mistake ? or MANIPULATION ?

ARE WE ALL SHEEP NOW ?

ITS CONTEMPT OF PARLIAMENT again, this there is NO DOUBT about (quotes do NOT just appear by themselves).

DEMOCRACIES depend on an INFORMED population (so we know how to VOTE), NOT misinformed (or blatantly LIED to and MANIPULATED by OUR Government).

Time to EXIT the Harper FISH BOWL (HARPERLAND where the blind lead the blind).

Intentionally misquoting the AG in an attempt to mislead the public during an election campaign – this is tantamount to lying to deceive parliament. This strikes at the very heart of open and honest government. Stephen has learned well from Brian.
