Toronto Pride: So this is what the Conservatives helped fund!

There’s been much  drama over this year’s announcement of the Conservative government funding Toronto Pride. But just who was at this mega gay parade? Men in leather jockstraps, drag queens and  porn stars, naturally. But also pro-Israel groups, anti-Israel groups, gay Anglicans—and the Canadian Armed Forces doing recruitment. Several on-duty police forces wore festive gear. While politicians from the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, the Liberals and the NDP were out in full force. And Rick Mercer.

Toronto Pride: So this is what the Conservatives helped fund!

  1. The Canadian Armed Forces were there? Clearly the Conservatives don't support the troops, eh? And pretty much everybody else except for some intolerant evangelicals…

  2. Rick Mercer, a man in Burberry underpants, tags of Pierre Elliot Trudeau = yyyyesss!!!

  3. What do Jewish issues have to do with this parade?

  4. "Nice Jewish Boys against Israeli Apartheid" marching with the Palestinians at Gay Pride.

I'm surprised the exploding heads all over the country haven't resulted in a state of emergency being declared.

  5. Man, you'd be hard pressed to find more people with bigger smiles on anywhere in Canada at any time. The Hindu float was the coolest, IIMHO. It's a shame nobody has revived the Athenian practice, during their Dionysia Festival, of carrying a huge (like, five-storey) phallus down the street. That would be cool.

    • Funniest has to be the Proud Anglicans

I don't know, the bearded pink bunnies in poodle skirts are pretty humorous!

    • Excuse me? Why are Proud Anglicans funny? Now, if they'd been sipping sherry and wearing church bonnets, maybe… But otherwise, I think it's great to see the Anglicans there.

      • Yes indeed! Speaking as an Anglican that doesn't drink much, we're the drinkingest lot in Christendom! ;)

  7. I can see why the Cons regretted supporting this event. It looks like everyone had fun.

  8. So where are the penises and boobs? And I don't mean Iggy and Layton. I thought there was supposed to be nudity at these events. These pictures are not a lot different than what you find at the beach.
And why did these Liberals take off these cool PET pics for the stampede in Calgary?

    • My second hand info is that the nudity was confined to something like one group of 6 men, not a one under 65.

There's generally much less actual naked fund at the Pride parade than the haters would have you believe. As you said, generally there's not much you wouldn't see at any beach in Canada (and pretty much NOTHING you wouldn't see at a beach in Europe). There's really not much at the Pride Parade that's much more risque than what you could see at the Calgary Stampede Parade.

  9. !3th picture from the bottom, is that Senator Mike Duffy, in drag?

  10. So I see the festival has had more stable funding from the CPC as compared with the Lib's – too funny – director of one of Canada's premier gay and lesbian festivals sprang to the defence of the Conservative government Wednesday, saying she has received even more stable support since the Tories took office. – from the TGM

    • I'm so confused at this point that I don't know if the Tories would be happy or appalled to have that little bit of information making the rounds.

      • boy they can really mix a message eh?

  11. Stockwell Days head just exploded.

  12. Some nice pics. The thing is that the Pride organizers say the federal money didn't fund the parade at all – actually it was for better access for disabled people and a bunch of other legit stuff, not for the parade. Which is after all only a three hour event out of the whole ten day fesival.

  13. These are wonderful photographs Mitch. Thank you!

  14. So the Police and the Mayor take part in this while the overt nudity in front of children has been deemed Child-abuse by the UNECEF.ca website
    and Convention for Childrens rights.
WOW ,no surpriise that Toronto is the Kiddie porn and Pedophile centre of North America.

Didi Miller bring his Kids to theis event??????

  15. The Tories spend $2 BILLION hosting the G20. plus $2million for a fake lake in the convention centre ("Lake Doughbegone"), but threaten to pull $30,000 in funding because some queers oppose Israel's treatment of Palestinians.

And to the person who asked "What have Jewish issues got to do with Pride?"…please remember that Pride is about speaking out against oppression whatever form it takes.

    • The lake was 57,000, by the way. The whole journalism pavilion was 1.6M.
