U of T tops Canadian universities in global ranking

New system has nine Canadian universities in top 200 worldwide

An overhaul of The Times Higher Education rankings, a global universities ranking system, has placed the University of Toronto as the top Canadian school. Nine Canadian universities are in the top 200: U of T is at 17, the University of British Columbia at 30, McGill University at 35, McMaster University at 93, the University of Alberta at 127, University of Victoria at 130, University of Montreal at 138, Dalhousie at 193 and Simon Fraser University at 199. Compared to other countries in the world, Canada has the fifth-best showing of post-secondary institutions.

  1. SFU should be #1!!!!!!!

  2. I looked at the methodology of the survey and frankly was not impressed. Still it struck me that there were better ways to compare countries than simply adding the number of schools in the top 200.

    1) Include quality: So from the survey Harvard should count more than say SFU (sorry Joe). If you look at the total number of "points scored" Canada does a little better. we come in 4th behind USA, UK & Germany.

    2) normalize to population
This was a shocker, once normalized to the country's population the order is

    Switzerland
    Hong Kong
    Sweden
    Netherlands
    Denmark
    UK
    Ireland
    Singapore
    Australia
    Canada
    USA
    New Zealand
    Austria
    Norway
    Finland
    Belgium
    Taiwan
    Germany
    Korea (South)
    France
    Japan
    Turkey

  3. Dal. Univ. in top 200 but Waterloo and Queens missing?? go figure these useless rankings.

  4. Number One? We understand they are changing the name to U.C.U University of the Centre of the Universe?

  5. SFU just grazing in at the bottom of the list, eh? That's my old haunt. I wonder if the English dept. ever got around to offering a Joyce course, you know: "Ulysses," "Finnegans Wake" etc. But why should they when Maggie Atwood's always on offer, narratology is trendier, and "subjective criticism" courses provide everyone with guaranteed A's?

  6. U of T, Canada's Ivy League, takes gold again.

  7. Wow, no Waterloo? I'm surprised. It makes me not feel so bad for deciding to go to UVic instead.
