U.S. budget watchdog reveals doubts about F-35 design

Not only will costs be higher than Harper says, there may be problems with the program itself

While the election debate rages on over the skyrocketing costs of Canada’s F-35 fighter jet purchase, a new report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office prompts questions about the stability of the joint strike fighter program. The report by the U.S. budget watchdog shows that the purchase price for the high-tech fighter bombers designed by Lockheed Martin are substantially higher than what the Harper government has projected, and fundamental questions about the actual functionality of the jets still remain. “After more than nine years in development and four in production, the program has not fully demonstrated that the aircraft design is stable, manufacturing processes are mature, and the system is reliable,” said the report, which goes on to say that as many as 10,000 design changes might be made between now and 2016, the year that Canada will sign the final contract for the purchase.

  1. That's my beef with the F-35: the program doesn't look very well run or, at the very least, the results aren't too good.

It might turn out to be a very good investment, but at this point in time it doesn't look like it.

  3. Really, I prefer the hot air balloon water bombing. Our society is more qualified for this idea. Imagine our present forced bilinguals in one of those things! Jeez, one trip and billions gone!

  5. Yes, the F-35 is a dud. So stop worrying about it.

No one will buy it. They're going to screw around with this thing for about 3 more years, at which point the US military will be fed up, and with Congress squeezing them to save money, bye bye JSF program.

To save face, they may buy like 200 planes, stick them in a hanger, and never use them. But then with the tiny purchase, the per unit cost goes to 500mil and all the international partners, Canada included, run away from this program at full speed, arms flailing wildly in terror.

If I were a betting man, my money would be on Canada never buying a single F-35.

  7. But, because of the North American Security agreement, Canada has to do their share and in agreement with the kind of equipment that the United States wants. Thats all signed to.

  9. WOW Harper cant be wrong. The USA must be mistaken.

  11. Unfortunately, there are little if any other viable alternatives to the F-35 because the Europeans Eurofighter and/or Dassault don't even have stealth aircraft on the design stage which means looking to them would mean a 10-15 year minimum before seeing a stealth aircraft from them. And when the Russians and Chinese are developing stealth fighters meaning their satellites (like Syria, Iran and Venezuela) will have stealth fighters, buying older F-16 and/or F-18s are much of an answer.

Finally, whoever thought the F-35 could be built for $60-60M probably bought the Brooklyn Bridge also; how can Lockheed build the F-35 for $50-60M per aircraft when the latest generation F-16 Block 60 has a pricetag of $105-125M each.

  13. I would not trust Ayatollah Harper to buy a car. He is clueless and cannot count.

  15. The procurement of F35s should be cancelled for two reasons. Firstly, we have no military need for it. Secondly, we should not be burdening our children and grandchildren with this colossal waste of money which they will have to pay back.

There is no credible threat that could be countered by our few F35s. The interception of the odd Russian aircraft just outside our territorial borders has been going on since the 60s. The intercepts were done with CF101s and now with CF18s. The Russian aircraft presented no threat then and are no threat now. An all out attack would be insane and involve ICBMs. No role for the F35 here!

The threat we face is an economic threat.

The threat is that stupid actions by our government will bankrupt our country. We will then be obliged to sell control of our resources to the highest bidder thus losing "sovereignty". We need to counter the economic threat to our Arctic, protect our coastal fisheries, deal with internal unrest, root out terrorist cells, keep our country financially viable, etc. A tactical force with suitable air transport is what is needed. No role for the F35.

In support of our most important ally and neighbour, we must ensure that they are never threatened by activities that occur or originate in this country. That will allow them to handle the "big stuff". In that regard, they always have! To say otherwise is to be kidding ourselves about our own importance.

  17. There are better alternatives such as the Super Hornet. Stealth is not all that important for Canada, unless we want to have planes fighting in other countries; and why would we? The F-35s would be useless in the Arctic since they only have one engine.:

  18. The F35 program is needed. The government cannot know the costs yet and are only passing on what knowledge they have. The program is not even up and running yet and we have Liberals wanting to cancel it (they would then proceed to order the F35C). There is a new world order coming and we have to be on board. Our Allies are all in the F35 program, we need to be too. The UN is going to be tossed aside for the useless organization it has become and a new group based on free democracies will emerge to protect our collective assets and rights against the Muslim and Chinese autocrats. These people don't care about human rights, the environment or any other item so called "progressives" hold dear. We need to have capabilities that mesh with our Allies and the will to use them. The alternatives are not pretty.. The cost of the F35 is irrelevant in the big picture, we are all going to pay the same, blathering on about it is just that – blather.

    • Steve Harper cares about human rights? Not on the basis of his record as a backer of all things Republican American and a deep nod to suffocating religiosity. You need to get out more.

  20. How the Harper regime can dare complain about any of the oppositions spending promises in this election is beyond bizarro world for me?! LOL!, wile in the very same breath they are spending MEGA BILLIONS on a flying credit card to make their American buddies happy?!.

"Does Canada spend enough on defense?"

No BUT we should be spending/buying based on Canada's needs NOT the Americans.

Canada does not need a FIRST-STRIKE WARMONGERS F-35, it needs a long-range interceptor.

Their are options out their MUCH newer then our CF-18 for BILLIONS LESS.

    Americanization.

  22. The Harper regime platform –

-Prorogue Parliament on multiple occasions at the cost of $millions of taxpayers dollars.

-$16-30+ Billion on American first strike fighter aircraft.

    -$Billions wasted on G8/G20.

-$Billions on American style mega prisons.

    -Attacks on low-income seniors.

-Attack veterans Ombudsman Pat Stogran for doing his job.

-For the first time in the history on the UN, Canada is in the noose-bleed section & not the main table.

-A world disgrace from Copenhagen to Cancun with its head up American AXX on climate change.

-Scrapping of the long-form census in spite of unanimous condemnation.

  23. -$Millions wasted on partisan advertising and Economic Action Plan signage.

-The biggest spending finance minister in Canadian history.

-Authoritarian style government Muzzling dissent and stifling free speech.

-A PM who vowed to "never appoint an unelected senator" who now cant appoint them fast enough.

-A government who campaigned on accountability & ethics now causing an un-necessary election in 2011 for being found in contempt of Parliament for the first time in CDN history.

-$Billions to help the Americans control our border & sovereignty.

-Attack the PBO Kevin Page for doing his job.

-More $Billions in profits for large corporations, banks & dirty oil. ZERO for health care, day care, pharmacare, retirement, etc.

    -Kill gun control.

-The largest deficit in CDN history.

Did I miss anything?, oh that's right its all hidden from both the opposition & the CDN public. get out & VOTE!.

  24. The Americans have extended and upgraded the manufacture of F16s and F18s against the very real possibility that this new clunker won't fly. Interestingly the superior F-22 stealth which America won't sell abroad has never found a use in the American arsenal. It simply isn't required. I suspect they are continuing to build the F-35 not because it is useful but because it allows them to download the incredible American debt to countries that wish to please America.

  25. Steve Harper cares about human rights? Not on the basis of his record as a backer of all things Republican American and a deep nod to suffocating religiosity. You need to get out more.

  26. Heres what the silly old man Hawn would say to all that…

9 Billion is the number la la la la cant hear you 9 Billion is the number…
