Ukraine wants to ban SpongeBob Squarepants, says it promotes homosexuality

A kids’ cartoon or subtle propaganda promoting homosexuality to impressionable minds? When it comes to SpongeBob Squarepants, a Ukraine’s watchdog thinks it’s the latter.

The country’s National Expert Commission for Protecting Public Morality is calling for a special session to investigate allegations that SpongeBob Squarepants is actually an ad for everything gay. The claims were initially made by a far-right Catholic group, but Ukrainian officials are taking it seriously.

And SpongeBob isn’t the only one to run into trouble with Ukrainian authorities. The Shrek franchise, for example, is being accused of containing “sadism,” and South Park of promoting “reincarnation propaganda.”

The Ukrainian watchdog, though, seems to have the right idea when it comes to the Teletubbies. Here’s how it describes a child watching the popular TV program: “An imbecile who will sit near the screen with an open mouth and swallow any information.”
