Government hopes more international students fill Canadian universities

OTTAWA – The Harper government is hoping to attract more students to Canada from overseas — a lot more.

International Trade Minister Ed Fast says the government hopes a new program will see more than 450,000 international researchers and students enrolled at Canadian universities by 2022.

The aim is to attract students from six key countries — China, Brazil, India, Mexico, Turkey and Vietnam.

If successful, the program could result in a doubling of the number of international students studying in Canada.

Fast says he wants to see that happen while preserving current seat space in post-secondary institutions for Canadian students.

The government plans to spend $5 million annually to support the program.

Another $13 million over two years will be spent on the Globalink program, which also helps Canadian students study in other countries.

Fast says encouraging more international education helps to create jobs.

“This strategy will also help us advance Canada’s commercial interests in priority markets around the world,” Fast said in a statement.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says the program will pump billions of dollars into the economy.

  1. “The aim is to attract students from six key countries — China, Brazil, India, Mexico, Turkey and Vietnam”
Worthy goals, however, based upon my observations we’ll most likely get students from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Morroco, “Palestine” and other nations which enjoy our education system, while hating those who provide it.

    • “Palestine” interesting!!!
      Seems Zionism extracted statements
you better educate yourself about (crime rates per capita) between all countries mentioned, then take a moment of silence to reflect on that.!!!

  2. The only reason Harp wants that is for the money.

  3. “…Another $13 million over two years will be spent on the Globalink
program, which also helps Canadian students study in other countries….”

    Why ?
I guess our Canadian Universities aren’t good enough for Canadians?, but theirs’ is.?
Why do you think they come here.
As it is already, half of theses foreigners get a Free University education in Canada, because they do NOT pay back the Fed Loans,…, and then they just “split” back to their own country ?!
This has been happening long enough.

Harpo needs to deal with the fact that there are NO Jobs for Canadians, after they graduate from Canadian Universiries, nevermind throwing more Taxpayer money out the door just to buy “foreign” votes. !

It’s bad enough we’ve “Outsourced” all of our manufacturing, as well as many other jobs,
but now, Harpo wants to also “Outsource” our education ?
    Enough is enough.

    • @bladder… where did u get that info that foreigners can take loan? You must know some thug then but I can tell you most foreign students (may be 99%) have no access to loans. Please dont mix foreign students with TFW, live in care giver program and other provincial nominee program which was designed to import least skilled foreign workers from sprcific contries to bolster vote bank. Every developed countries in the world has special imkigration pool for foreign students as they are source for foreign cash $$$. Please get your data first before commenting.
