Zebra dies at Calgary Zoo; 2 Humboldt penguins perished earlier this week

CALGARY – A zebra has died at the Calgary Zoo, the third animal to die there this week.

One of the zebras which arrived just before the June flood was found dead in the pasture at the zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Centre south of the city on Thursday.

The zebra, named Eleanor, was completing a mandatory quarantine period before debuting to the public.

A post-mortem has revealed the zebra had a twisted gut — a medical condition that occurs often in horse species and can kill quickly.

The zoo had two penguins die this week due to a bacterial infection.

However, a zoo official says all eight of its remaining Humboldt and two Gentoo penguins remain stable.

  1. I hope they don’t replace them as zoos are obsolete. No need to cage animals for a life behind bars.

Back before Internet, before TV the only way to see exotic creatures was a zoo. But todays with HD TV like Discovery or NGEO, and the Internet you can lookup and view any animal or living life form you want. And with modern TV and Internet, no safety, no ongoing suffering, no feeding issues for budget concerns, no politics, no messing with the animals lives. It isn’t the 1900s any more people, we have better more humane ways to see animals than to cage them.

So please, support me and write your mayors as zoos are now obsolete. And yes, I already wrote Nenshi and got no response.
