Halfway through his majority mandate, how is the PM doing?

  1. By the results it seems that most people focus on the trivial garbage that individual Conservative M.P.’s or Senators have done, while glossing over the ones that Liberals have done. They totally ignore the important things this government has done, such as establishing free trade deals with so many countries around the world and keeping Canada stable for several years during a staggering world economy. It all seems unimportant to socialists. Its all taken for granted while they scream their indignant outrage over trivia.

    • Worst PM and Finance minister ever…O! it’s NOT trivial to notice that an equal number of service jobs were axed by this gov’t ! or that a trade deal with Columbia does not equal one with Europe.

      • That’s a good thing, reducing the numbers of lazy ass, overpaid, over vacationed, over sick days, uncivil servants is just what is needed.

        You probably are one……….ha.

        • Gawd, the jealousy in this country is unreal.

          • jealousy? you are one in fact. Using irrationality to justify yourself is typical of you’s

          • And youse can’t speak English either….no wonder you can’t get a govt job.

          • I simply do not want to have gov’t job, because I would be bored to death, my sanity is worth more than that. T.Y.

          • This comment was deleted.

          • I don’t work for the govt….sorry.

          • You have no idea what ‘govt jobs’ are.

          • do you?

          • Cops, postal workers, RCMP, military, fire fighters….and the people who cut your cheques for medical care, pogey, disability, and pension

  2. It is a trivial poll so it’s no wonder that people appear to focus on trivial issues. We all know that nothing the Harper government does will satisfy his critics and the media treat the most trivial faux pas as if it augured the end of the world as we know it. Is anyone really naïve enough to believe these ‘scandals’ are unique to the Conservatives? Or is any stick suitable to beat a dogma?

    • If you run on a platform of openness, accountability, cleaning up corruption, ending patronage, then you do the exact opposite of those things, you can be expected to be hoisted on your own petard.

The fact that your only defence of this is “are these scandals unique to the Conservatives?” just proves this point.

  3. Canadians are over 150 BILLION deeper in FEDERAL debt under only 7 years of Harper rule—over 600 BILLION and growing each second—Harper Gov’t will certainly not be paying that off—certainly not even his grand children or great grand children. The profits of the foreign corporate investors keep rising but Canadians are getting poorer. Harper keeps giving Canada’s resources to foreign corporations instead of having the industries in Canada with work for Canadians—his strings are pulled by the greedy foreign investors who couldn’t care less about the welfare of Canada’s citizens, just their own profits. That’s why most manufacturing has been moved to the third world sweat shops. Free trade deals only enable the corporations to keep from paying duties thus maximizing their profits, while Canadians get poorer and the country gets deeper in debt to those bankers who stole 750 BILLION from US citizens. Canadians who worked 50 years to build this country are being expected to wait longer for pensions, because the foreign investors need more billions in profits. When it comes to trivialities, the Harper WAR MACHINE sure does a good job of demeaning all opposition leaders. Dion, Ignatieff, Mulcair and now Trudeau—disgusting trivial personal attacks. Must be the born-again Christian way. Time this false majority gov’t–25% does not make a majority—be ended. Harper just wants to make Canada into a type of FEUDAL state where the Corporations are the Royals and the foreign investors the LORDS and the 95% of the rest of Canadians, the serfs. That would be HELL ! !

  4. 95,000 jobs–It’s the economy stupid.

The rest of the choices are just side shows that should be dealt with by law and if guilty Mike Duffy, Pam Wallin and Mac Harb should be dealt with accordingly.
The Canadian economy under Mr. Harper is moving steadily and slowly ahead and Canadians should look at this big picture and realize we are the envy of the G8.
Canada is in good shape and are led by a very competent government. As we progress and lessen the deficit/debt we should remember that compared to other countries we are doing very well. I for one recognize how fortunate we are. This fact and not the little side shows by irresponsible Senators should remain our focus.

    • THERE are also liberal senators who have to pay back some money and the great trudeau himself collecting $ 20,000.00 per speaking engagement from chartities and senior homes , shame on him

      • Alan;
If people want to pay $20,000. to have anyone speak then it’s a free country and so be it.
But to call J. Trudeau ‘great’ is really getting ahead of one’s self. Justin Trudeau is not great he is a rookie MP and son of a Prime Minister–pretty ordinary, run of the mill guy I would say.

        • He is Pierre Trudeau’s son so he is awesome and we should immediately appoint him Prime Minister.

          • Alan, you have focused solely on the fact that I live in Quebec and you hold it against me, without even knowing me. That is akin to being racist! You are smug and arrogant. I love all of Canada, not just parts of it. By the way, I guess you love guns too!

    • As the gov’t did nothing different to spur economic growth, and all the jobs were private sector, I don’t see how the government can take credit. Plus, this is (so far) an anomaly; a one-month spike after a period of little growth. One month vs how many years?
If you can show me a pattern of growth along these lines – on that is ahead of the world’s economic trends generally – then you can make a case that the government is at least partially responsible. But not yet.

    • The loss of integrity of our federal government under a born-again so-called Christian doesn’t bother you one bit, does it?

  5. What has he done – Finance Minister took us from a $30 billion dollar (surplus) annual paydown on National deficit to a 30 billion Annual Deficit in 2 years (similar to what he did in Ontario). Then claims credit for making Canada a stable country in bad times.

PM, cancels all creative reseach orders scientists to do only do what research businesses request. etc., etc., and the list goes on………….

    • Lyle;
Please; let’s face a few facts. The world has gone into one of the biggest economic challenges since the 2008 bubble with economies failing or hanging on by their finger tips and Canada is the envy of all these countries and in fact is a stable economy.
The scientists work for the federal government and as such are not free lancers who can publish what they want on the taxpayer’s dime.
And of course you can only see negativity because you don’t like this government.
take a more mature look at the bigger picture…please.

      • a few years back 57 million dollars sitting in OUR E.I. account, vanished, disappeared, now,
3.1 billion dollars, vanished, gone, where? why?
        Oh, I know…. he is a magician……..

      • how much does conservative pay u for making this thread?

        • Everybody who makes pro-conservative comments on any internet comment board is a paid employee of the PMO.

    • let me add, the 3.1 billion dollars, on accounted for, I would not like him to run my home budget, I too would be in deficit.

  6. And exactly how has this government created jobs? Jobs are always created every spring. And they are always temporary seasonal employees. This happens year after year after year. There is nothing new to look at here. It is a natural occurrence, and not something created by any government, be it Liberal, Conservative or NDP. So please stop the crowing about increases in jobs.
What is destructive though is the muzzling of government employees. Be they scientists, researchers or just plain run of the mill office workers. This is not democracy in action. This government has turned into an outright dictatorship.
Freedom of the press, and freedom of action and association are the foundation of a democratic state. The Conservatives under Stephen Harper however are demonstrating a Mussolini style of leadership that has never been seen in this country since its foundation in 1867. Other than the outright murder of Louis Rhael this is not something any Canadian should be proud of.

  7. Anytime you hear of a leader furnishing party line talking points to it’s members, you have a problem. I don’t trust this man and I think his agenda is religiously rooted in the extreme. This is not good for Canada. Slashing programs left and right so that he can proclaim a “balanced budget” is irresponsible and may very well be irrevocably damaging. Veterans returning home who are injured and tossed aside because the budget for their care has been hacked is only one example but may be one of the more disgusting.

  8. Well so far, Harper hasn’t DONE anything….stupid stuff like the census, firing scientists, yeah….but nothing useful.

  9. Contempt for established Parliamentary budget procedures; muzzling civil servants to prevent them from reporting scientific truths; trying to sign a FIPA with China which would tie Canada’s hands for 30 years and open the flood gates to Chinese workers and require compensating Chinese investors for any changes in laws effecting their investment profits in Canada; losing track of untold millions of dollars in spending which can’t be documented; selling strategic oil assets to the Chinese; rejigging election funding rules to favour the Conservative Party, rampant election fraud and corruption….. maybe it takes something more trivial to wake people up

  10. The Senate scandals only relect the same percentage of greed that is in the overall society. This is hardly a reflection on Harper except that he, as well as many or his pre-decessers, made what is in hindsight, poor choices in people.
The press concentration on the scandals deflects attention from the choice of some of his ministers. Perhaps, in hindsight, Harper’s choice of Taves and McKay will also prove bad choices. But again this makes any assessement of Harper or his government impossible at this time. Only the future will tell with any certainty.

  11. Flaherty’s budget ensures a steady economic environment for businesses to expand and create jobs. This is no different than what most governments do, except under the Harper regime, the budget is now called and ‘economic action plan’. Whup-dee-doo.

Most of the credit should go to the businesses, yet this government plasters the highways with “Canada’s Economic Action Plan” signs and pays for radio and TV advertising in praise of itself. Maybe that’s their ‘Action Plan’: to build up the road-sign billboard and advertising industry?

What else is Harper’s government doing, besides padding their expense accounts, vacationing for free with their buddies at Canadian embassy luxury residences and gagging their MPs?

  13. ……………Three quarters of the people would seem to be placing their emphasis on an open, ethical, honest, government, as poll results indicate. ————-Steven Harper and the people he chooses to surround himself with, clearly have not shown an abundance of these qualities.————–‘Leopards don’t change their spots’ These people have had their chance to show what they are !————–
    —————————————————TIME FOR A CHANGE !!!!!!!

  14. This is clearly not how you structure an unbiased poll….
1 positive short term metric vs 5 negative news stories vs “i dunno”.
I wonder which will end up with the most votes….

And this will now likely turn into a story of how the majority of Canadian do not think Stephen Harper is not doing a good job…. I expect better…. but I am not surprised that the Macleans has chosen to show their bias again

  15. Too soon to tell. The job’s numbers are unreliable and the Senate scandal will die down since the RCMP is on the case and nothing will come out. What is going to take over that will be the elections that have to be called for Coderre and Rae. The sooner Harper calls those elections the sooner the media will concentrate on comparing Justin and Mulcair and see who truly can compete for Harper’s job 2015.
Now what Harper has to do is somehow reduce or eliminate the deficit. Only way I can see that is if he increase GST but at the same time reduce income tax only for the middle class. The rich can afford to keep the same rate while the poor don’t pay taxes anyway.

  16. “95,000 net new jobs in May alone — all in the private sector. Enough said.”

Interesting in that the 95,000 new jobs numbers are based on widely criticized and inaccurate numbers.

    • You’re right. Nobody in Canada has a job right now. And it’s the fault of the Conservatives. They are bad for the economy.

    • Oh come on, give the CPCs the benefit of the doubt that they are accurate. However soon the market for hotel maids and burger flipping will dry up. What then? Sewer scrubbing? The key jobs for shoveling dung are all taken in Ottawa.

  17. Doing what?
I think his bad boy, Quebec has the English without equal language rights and freedom of speech.

  18. Again, the wordings in this poll is so suggestive and deliberately steer the respondents to one choice. Shame on you Macleans. The conservatives was not the only party to use “robocalls”.

  19. WHAT is he doing?

  20. It’s all fine to be annoyed with the b.s. that has occurred but have you forgotten Grand Mere, Adscam, the helicopter debacle, the National Energy Program, the quadrupling of the national debt, and the million other Liberal boondoggles? The “natural ruling party” was the original rip-off-the-taxpayer party but it seems that with another Trudeau, who has all of his father’s arrogance but none of the cunning, some Canadians want to go back to that!

    • No. It wasn’t forgotten. It was punished. The Liberals were reduced to third party status in the House. They were forced to eat through three separate leaders..one of which would actually have been an exceptional Prime Minister. This eventually made them change even the very policies and methods they use to choose their leader… that is fundamental party DNA stuff.

And having done that, it seems that many Canadians are now willing to give them another shot.

When the CPC is willing to do the same thing, then I’ll certainly be willing to give them another shot.. but not until then.
