Montreal-area Sens fan, 11, will watch playoff game from owner’s suite

OTTAWA – Last week, Keila Penner was told to remove her Ottawa Senators jersey when she went to her Montreal-area school.

Tonight, the 11-year-old hockey fan will be watching from Senators’ owner Eugene Melnyk’s personal suite as Ottawa hosts the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4 of their first-round NHL playoff series.

Keila’s father, Cary, grew up in Ottawa and is a die-hard Sens fan.

Keila grew up as one too, even though the family now lives in Lachine, Que., near Montreal.

The Senators brought Keila and her family from Lachine by limo for the game and will be presenting her with a new jersey — autographed by the whole team — to wear at tonight’s game.

Keila was told she couldn’t wear her Sens jersey at school because it was Habs Jersey Day.

“The school made a rule it was going to be only Habs jerseys (that) day, or the school uniform,” Cary Penner told Ottawa radio station 1310News. “My daughter wanted to go in her (Sens) jersey and I supported her 100 per cent.”

Keila says she was thrilled by the offer to watch the game from Melnyk’s personal suite at Scotiabank Place.

“I think that’s amazing,” said Keila. “I was speechless; I didn’t know what to say.”

  1. what a bunch of dbags at that school?!?!?

    • **French

      • Umm, your “racist” comments were uncalled for… honestly we are all Canadians here, and I thought we were better than that.
For the record it was an ENGLISH School that did this. GOOGLE and you’ll discover the name.
I fully support the Girl’s right to choose which team she supports on a non-uniform day by wearing her Sens Jersey… and believe the school was WRONG in telling her she had to change or go home.
Glad to see the Sens Organization step up to the plate and reward this 11 year olds sense of fairness in life. Hope she and her family enjoy the game tonight and their Box Seats and the NEW Jersey signed by all the players. (Class act that Mr Melnyk !!)

        • “The school made a rule it was going to be only Habs jerseys (that) day, or the school uniform,”

So you should be rewarded for breaking the rules? I doubt Mr Melnyk was informed of this.Great message to send to kids.

  2. For the people that have trouble reading ,read it slow! “The school made a rule it was going to be only Habs jerseys (that) day, OR THE SCHOOL uniform,”

    • The issue being highlighted in this article might be to advanced for your thought process. You’ve completely missed the point.

For a school administration to behave like this and act like bullies is disgusting. The Habs jersey only rule was stupid, and punishing a girl for displaying her team pride is a horrible example to set . Think like us or else…

      Unbelievable.

      • too advanced for your thought process? Really? she broke the rules! Her father admitted it,the kid was getting jeered in class and disrupting it.This girl could have been hurt and the school responded,i think with a reasonable request.

Agreed the habs only bit was dumb.

But rules are rules, hows that work with your thought process.

Hell i think i will drive 150 instead of 100 today because i think 100 is wrong.Get with the program,if you don’t like the rules we have there are many places in the world where rules don’t apply, perhaps you should go live there.

        • How about white’s only day! Or no homosexuals day…According to your logic, if those are rules then it is wrong to make a statement. Just because it is a rule doesn’t mean it is right!!

          Good on her!!

  3. I was looking for Ottawa suites recently. I wish I could have gotten as good a place as this.
