American man wins the Boston Marathon. And the winner on the men’s side of the Boston Marathon is Meb Keflezighi, who became the first American man to win the race since 1983. His time: 2:08:37. After the race, Keflezighi said he used the energy of the crowd and the memory of those who perished in the previous year’s bombing to finish strong. “Toward the end I was remembering the victims who passed away. I said ‘I’m going to use the energy to win, just like the Red Sox did,’” he told the Boston Globe. It was a historic day on the women’s side, too, where Kenyan runner Rita Jeptoo set a new course record, finishing with a time of 2:18:57. This is Jeptoo’s third course record in Boston. She also set one in 2006 and 2013.

Three funerals today for the Calgary stabbing victims. Family and friends gathered at three separate funeral services Monday to remember some of the young people killed in a tragic stabbing at a house party last week. Jordan Segura, 22, Kaiti Perras, 23, and Josh Hunter 22 were remembered in memorial services Monday. A friend told mourners at Jordan’s funeral that he was surrounded by friends, even at the end. “Myself and a couple of friends were with him right at the end and I want you all to know that Jordan was not alone,” Jayda Shreenan said through tears. Funerals for the other two victims, Zackariah Rathwell and Lawrence Hong, are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. Matthew de Grood, 22, has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder.

Teen survives flight from California to Hawaii in the wheel well of airplane. A 16-year-old boy tumbled out of a plane wheel well in Maui, Hawaii, five and a half hours after the plane took off from San Jose, California. Ground crews were shocked to see the boy, as were officials, who said the temperature during the flight would have reached -60 Celsius with very little oxygen. The boy was reportedly unconscious for a portion of the flight. He was turned over to child protective services and FBI said he wouldn’t be charged.

Russia says Ukraine violated peace deal. A tenuous peace between Ukraine and Russia didn’t last long, as the Russian foreign minister said Monday that Ukraine wasn’t holding up its end of a deal reached in Geneva last week. Overnight Sunday, at least three people were killed in gunfire near the eastern Ukrainian city of Slavyansk, which is currently under the control of pro-Russian factions. Its unclear who, exactly, was killed and who is responsible. U.S. vice-president Joe Biden is headed to Kiev today, to aid in talks scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Air Canada in damage-control mode after baggage blunder. Two Air Canada employees who were filmed tossing bags down a set of stairs and into a bin approximately six metres below will likely be fired, pending a review of their behaviour, a spokesperson for the company said Monday. This comes after Air Canada apologized for “totally unacceptable mishandling of our passengers’ baggage captured on video.” However, it may take more than an apology to un-do the damage from the below YouTube video, which was posted April 18 and has now been viewed nearly 60,000 times.
