Should governments use public funds to build an NHL arena in Quebec City?

Should governments use public funds to build an NHL arena in Quebec City?

  1. No, sorry. Leave the public funds for public services. Let the wealthy sports owners pay for their own stuff.

    • You have to make the difference between building an amphitheatre (Quebec, Edmonton etc) and buying a franchise. The federal govt money here is to build an arena for a possible bid for the Olympics (just like Vancouver received money to help pay for their Olympics) and to bring an NHL team back to Quebec and vitalize the economy. Any city would support that kind of initiative and I would be the first to encourage that. The franchise already has a backer (Peladeau) and there are MANY private companies already willing to support and pay for a team here in Quebec. I hope that people understand that this could be your city and you would have the same hopes as I.

      • Carol Ann, you took the words right out of my mouth! I live in Virgin Inlet, NFLD, and me and everyone else in the town agrees, we wants the same thing here.

  2. no!

  3. I assume that the plan is to build an arena in Quebec City to try to shore up the Conservative vote there.

  4. No. They can do their research, and if it proves to be profitable (not a sure thing) then they can borrow the money and built it.

    • "and if it proves to be profitable (not a sure thing)
Come on Andre—be real! The chances of this not being profitable are about the same as a man having a bab….
      never mind!

  5. imma go w/ no.

  6. the question is misleading, since they aren't asking for help with an NHL team…they are asking for a new arena…which will be more profitable if an NHL were in it…they have several other plans for the bigger arena, so if people who are instantly saying 'no', did some research they would see the reasons why they need help and what their plans are for this new arena…so the answer should be 'yes' since they have done their research and have solid planning in place…

    • Research— "Give us the money or we're gonna seperate!", has always worked.

      Planning— Use same approach.

  7. If the government has all this extra money to fund things (that should be paid for entirely by private sector) they are taxing us too much and should return the money to the people. Government is a disgrace.

  8. it is an abomination to use public funds for this purpose. When the Debt is so high, and so many other organizations are drying out for help, the government should be considering humanitarian issues, like health or education or child care, Not building Arenas!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. The answer is NO. This is a BIG BUSINESS, and the people involved make million.. This is not what any level of Government is for, and that would include the City of Edmonton!

  10. Reduce our taxes, leave my money in my pocket, and let me decide if I want to support them with my money.

  11. No not a single extra penny from the Canadian Federal Government.
Since Quebec receives over 60% of the Federal Transfer Payments then the Provincial Government or The city of Quebec might consider using a portion of those billions of $$ for a new Nordiques team.
    Enough is enough!!

    • Far too much of my hard earned taxes already goes to Quebec and they still whine and complain. 174 Million NO!!! 23 Million, ok. the same as they offered Winnipeg for the Football Stadium. – and the same should be offered to other provinces for their sports projects as well. NO FAVORITISM! Especially since the feds have already set precedence with manitoba. You can't change your mind and give a cake to your "Favorite Spoiled Child" when the other child was only given a cupcake.

      Damn Politicians.

  12. If Hamilton can not et a franchise what makes people think Quebec will get one?? Garry, Hamilton

  13. Since when did governments NOT provide financial incentives for business ventures?? At least this could be a repayable loan…with a guarantee from the NHL?

  14. RIght on!!! During the recession ( still ongoing) I have not heard of one sports star willing to give up one dollar of their salary when the rest of us are being laid off, cut back, and salarys & benefits being reduced. and the jocks keep demanding MORE MONEY!!

    Poor broke athletes.

  15. How about NO. No more shovelling hard-working Canadians money into the greediest, laziest most selfish province and getting nothing back for it but a “We Remember” on their license plates. No.

    • Wow…tell me, is Ontario a lazy province because they get the 40 000 jobs of the automobile industry? and hundreds of milions more to save those jobs while the forest indusrty in eastern Canada receive a big 0$? IS B-C a lazy province because they receive help ( $ ) for the olympics?
And what about "shovelling" Canada oil in Québec instead of selling it to China and other asian countries? ( Coast to coast my ass! on license plate perhaps? )
Our "We Remember" license plate ( BTW its " Je me souviens" ), do you even know what it stand for?
Should we dump Newfoundland ( and i dont say Newfoundland and Labrador because Elizabeth II decide to steal this part of Québec territory ) and PEI because they would be considered as 3rd word country by the UN if they were not part of Canada?
So tell me, are you just not very good in economy and history or are you simply a racist?
The funniest thing is that im pretty sure your one of those wondering: " Why some of Québec polulation want to leave Canada? Its unbeleivable!"
      Yeah, i wonder why!
      Guillaume, Québec

      • Boys oh boys, it's dem friggin' Brits again aint it Guillaume. It's dem what took the rest o' the country away from yuz as well wuzzenit; you know, on the plains of whazisname. Good to see yur not bitter about it tho', me son! Others may forget Guillaume, but "I will remember".

        • @Roger from the Rocks

Sorry, im honestly not sure to understand what your saying

      • "So tell me, are you just not very good in economy and history or are you simply a racist?" racist? racist?? my apologize o masterful one. i was not aware that Quebecois counted as a different superior master race from the rest of us lowly whites. the greediness and arrogance of your province truly knows no bounds. Quebec has been given disproportionate representation in this country for decades! we declared our selves bilingual for one single whinny province for christ's sake. do the rest of us a favor and separate. see how well you do when the government isnt subsidizing hundreds of millions at your behest.

        • @theintellectual

"…i was not aware that Quebecois counted as a different superior master race from the rest of us lowly whites."

Me neither!!! But why are you saying that? I spoke about economy and politic, not races!

" we declared our selves bilingual for one single whinny province for christ's sake"

You dont even have to become bilingual just let a politician make the declaration ( 3 secondes…ouh! hard work )Yes im the whinner!

          • "So tell me, are you just not very good in economy and history or are you simply a racist?"

yes you were talking about races and yes you people are kind of the whiners. no other province in Canada gets your kind of representation or recognition.

      • I was told "je me souvriens" referred to the incorrect deployment of salad forks at one of Wolfs regimental conciliation dinners. The "oomiliation" suffered by Quebecois guests persists to this day.__The determination of a separate Quebec's borders will be decided by the ROC not federal Quebecois versus provincial Quebecoise. limiting the new socialist paradise of sovereign Quebec to the Saint Laurence valley is a good starter,__As a western Canadian,I look forward to the day when my dealings with the Federal government aren't gate kept by menopausal Quebecoise matrons speaking down their noses.

        • @william

"I was told "je me souvriens" referred to the incorrect deployment of salad forks at one of Wolfs regimental conciliation dinners"

          Not even close, try again

"The determination of a separate Quebec's borders will be decided by the ROC not federal Quebecois versus provincial Quebecoise"

Do you let your neightboor make decision for you concerning your life?

  16. Bye the bye me ol' son, that last bit o' your rant; I'm a bit fuzzy on it see.
Wuz you trying to ask why some of Quebec "pollution" want to leave Canada? Geeze, your being a little rough on yourself, don't you think?

    • @Roger from the rock

Ha! Ha! (honest laugh )…i didnt saw my spelling mistake, i meant "population"

  17. Let the people who want it pay for it , not the taxpayer. Has Harper forgot about the record deficit already?

  18. Your question is wrong. The money asked is not for the Nordiques but for the Colisée. The old one is 60 years old!

    • Too bad! Quebec gets way too much of our money already. Let those interested in the sport pay or raise the money. We pay for too much already.

  19. Geez this fits totally into Stephan Harper's capricious narrative.

  20. For how many years has the Federal gov't sent money to Quebec above and beyond the other provinces?!
I say NO. We keep giving everything to Quebec all the time. This is not a necessary national expenditure. Let Quebec build its own arena. I'm sick and tired of giving Quebec all the money and best deals.

  21. The billions of dollars associated with the NHL,should cover the cost of ANY new arena etc. Hockey players are OVERPAID now, compared to the police, firemen and all the other sacrificing people, who
put their lives on the line for the good of the people.
Let the hockey players themselves contibute to a better arena, with a PORTION of their millions. OR, increase the price of the tickets to the
    arena involved.

  22. Quebec receives roughly 80% of the transfer payments from the rest of Canada to do with as they wish and providing services that we in the rest of Canada do not enjoy. It seems to be a political move on the part of the Conservatives to shore up their votes. If Quebec wants an arena then they should build it with the excessive monies they already receive from the rest of Canada.
    Enough is Enough!

  23. Quebec wants a % of financing for an ARENA from the federal government, not an NHL team or to pay an nhl owner an Arena.

This poll is asking the wrong question.

  24. Ben Tremblay is right on the money (pardon the pun)

The poll question is fatally flawed. Nobody is asking for public funds to bring back the Nordiques.

What the people of Quebec are asking for is a modern arena capable of hosting a large variety of events from hockey to rock shows. The present infrastructure, the Colisée, is well past its due date.

NHL hockey nothwithstanding, the city and entire region needs this infrastructure..

Nobody wants public funds to be invested in a pro hockey team, and confusing these 2 distinct matters only serves those who wish to ensure that Quebec City does not benefit from infracstructure funds.
