Should the federal government push ahead with its plan to cut corporate taxes?

Should the federal government push ahead with its plan to cut corporate taxes?

  1. Yes 100,000 dollars taxed at 15and one half percent pays the government 15500.00 dollars. This same 100,000.00 extra paid to the owner as a bonus is worth over 46,000.00 dollars to the government

    • Lower corporate tax is an incentive for corporation do more business in Canada. It is interesting that Ireland that run into trouble because of mismanagement it its banks has the lowest corporate tax rate in Europe. It did not budge to the pressure of European countries to raise it corporate tax rate because that was the secret of the Irish economic miracle that converted the poorest country in Europe to the one of the wealthiest.

      • One could argue that the real secret that converted Ireland was that it eliminated post-secondary tuition.

        • And where did the graduates find the jobs? In the government?

          • Well you see, graduates aren't stupid like some people. They understand that you can make your own job.

Statistics Canada has found, for instance, that post-secondary graduates are not only more likely to start their own businesses, but of all the new businesses started, those started by post-secondary graduates are more likely to still be running after five years.

And they found this in the horrible taxation area that is Canada.. oh my!

  3. Will somebody please tell us exactly how our corporate Taxes compare to the US, allowing for Health Care and other payroll taxes. The last figures that I saw indicated that our corporate taxes were lower than the US when those factors were considered. If this is true why would we lower our taxes — If it is not true then we probably should bring them into line.
How can we the public make that decision without any Facts

  5. Progressive economic wants to create more government cushy jobs that suck the public tit and create crap.
This is the mantra of the left suppress business and inflate government that will distribute favors to the politically correct people.
Something that was done in Greece, Zimbabwe and Venezuela and made them so successful.

    • Private corporations are sitting on all sorts of capital that they refuse to use. Only the ones that actually create more jobs deserve a tax break. The other greedly cowardly lazy ones should be taxed more.

      • So private corporations and people only create capital for the purpose of it being taxed away from them, or that they are required to spend it.

        Good to know.

So if I ever become a billionaire and choose to hold onto it, because it's mine (re: not yours) and I'll do as I please, when the leftist mob comes a knockin' we'll see how non-violent they can be.

        • Private corporations only exist to benefit the public.. at least, that's how it should be.. that's why we give them the liscence to operate as a corporation at tax rates which are already preferable.

          • Typical response of a leftist that never invested a penny to create business just collected money from government

          • Wrong, but nice try, idiot.

        • You'll never be a billionaire.

        • "if I ever become a billionaire. . . ."

    • Please. Progressive economics wants to create less people who are unable to support themselves.

Henry Ford had it right. Pay your workers well so that they can buy your stuff. Modern corporate executives seem to have forgotten this in their continual search to benefit short term shareholders (such as themselves).

The problems in Greece, Zimbabwe and Venezuela had more to do with the wealthy not paying their allotted share of the taxes, and the government not enforcing it.

      • You are inventing explanation drawn from thin air.

        • Oh? Do yourself a favor, try doing a bit of research before spewing.

Odds are it won't stop you from looking like an idiot, but at least you'll be spending less time doing that.

    • Find a site that normally sides with capitalist economics and get back to us with their results.

I don't see why it's at all the government's business how many "jobs" a corporation creates. It's objective is to create profit. It's objective is not to exist at the whim of the government. Let them govern themselves.

      • A corporation doesn't exist out of the ether. It is something society has specifically allowed to be created, with certain rights, privileges, and protections. If a person wants those rights, privileges, and protections, then they should pay for it.. both through licensing fees, and through taxes.

      • And let them pay substantial taxes for all the benefits they get from being in Canada.

        Do your own research.

  7. Private corporations are sitting on all sorts of capital that they refuse to use. Only the ones that actually create more jobs deserve a tax break. The other greedly cowardly lazy ones should be taxed more.

  8. Holly stick, having capital that is kept in reserve is a hallmark of a successful corporation. Capital starved corporation vent belly up when downturn occurred. But who is to tell the corporation when to deploy the capital. Government can create incentives but they are mostly abused. It is interesting that the only most successful country in the last 10 years is Communist China that is now the most capitalistic country in the world. It di not have to bail out corporations like US and Canada. All countries that adopted "progressive" economic are in big trouble with unemployment and government deficit rising and unrest in the streets.

  14. The question is misleading because the reduction in the tax rates will not be voted on in this budget. It was passed in 2007 with the support of the Liberals.

The combined opposition must introduce a bill to increase the taxation on business. It must also pass the senate before it has Royal assent.

    • I think we're all over this issue now. Please move on.

  19. Please. Progressive economics wants to create less people who are unable to support themselves.

  24. I'm ambivalent on this issue.

On one hand I believe that corporations should not pay tax at all. Corporate tax is passed on to consumers and employees. Instead a sharply progressive income tax would tax those who benefit most from corporate profit.

On the other hand I see that Canada has no way of taxing the income of foreign investors – unless we tax dividends and stock trades at source. But taxing dividends and trades will reduce the investment appeal of Canadian corporations.

    It's a tough problem.

I see the wisdom in eliminating corporate taxes, and I particularly like it if we justify the move by ruling that corporations are not persons. Only people pay taxes and those who can most afford taxes, those who have had the most benefit from the order, infrastructure, and resources that our government provides should pay the most – with gratitude.

I pay taxes on my middle-class income and I pay them with gratitude. I don't like Stephen Harper (what I know of him through the news) and I am suspicious, frightened of his agenda for our country. But still I pay my taxes with gratitude. I don't want my taxes to build prisons, I'd rather they went to schools and putting bright kids through grad school, and taking care of the people who really really so can't take care of themselves that they litter the streets and invade our homes.

    I see I'm drifting off-topic so I'll stop now.

  26. Tax cuts for corporations who create decent paying jobs for Canadian, "in Canada" should get a tx break, those who create $2.00 / day jobs in elsewhere then being the goods back to sell at high profits should have their taxes increased.

    • Eliminating the taxes to corporates simply puts more of the tax dollars to the CEOs earnings and their shareholders. Giving lower taxes to corporates in an ideal world should promote more jobs but history has proved that it is not doing that. How blind can you con supporters be? You all love paying the shareholders while robbing the poor it seems. Is that not so? The shareholder's and the corporations become richer and the poor tax payers which are all of us are poorer than before and have not gained a good paying job because of it.

I cannot believe the ignorance of the parrot supporters of Harper. He is not a god man. Get off your knees and see the man for who he really is. More like a slimy serpent, not a nice thought. May he soon find himself in the hell he deserves and brought on by himself..

  34. Let's help the needy, not the greedy.
Will these new tax cuts apply to the bank of Nova Scotia, which just broke its own record for profits last year, and all other banks?
Will it apply to the energy sector (oil etc) which also made huge profits?
Let's help the needy, not the greedy.

One expert says the tax cuts will create 100,000 new jobs. At, say, $30,000 per year, these new jobs will create $3Billion in pay cheques per year. By the year 2013, it is estimated that we will lose $60Billion in revenue from the corporate tax cuts. $60Billion.
    Now you do the math.

  37. If there's anything I dislike, it's the Liberals announcing corporate tax cuts years ago that were to kick in years later (ie today), make press releases and announcements taking credit for them, and then later on, when they are meant to take effect, reverse their decision.

If they're not gonna want to do it, they shouldn't be taking credit for it in the first place. These types of policies, where they announce something that will take place years later, and then years later they reverse the decision, they are absolutely and ethically unconscionable.

It's a farce, where they try to take all the credit for the decision and the votes that go with it, and then years later they show their unscrupulous untrustworthy scam and try to gain credit for opposing the very same decision! The Liberal Party is an unethical group of scam artists, whose policies are scams, ponzi schemes, and pork.

  39. Corporations want to be citizens, well citizens pay taxes. If the corporatists and their cronies don't like it, let them and their families take the next plane to India or China where they exported our jobs for excessive profits and try to live there paying nothing to the state. North Americans should stop letting corporations and their corporatist snakes in ties or sociopaths or psychopaths threaten our way of life. Maybe the unrest happening in Egypt and Tunisia needs to make it's way to docile and obedient North Americans who tolerate this abuse which ends up affecting our health care and social services for lack of available tax funds to keep our services viable. When is enough, enough.

  45. Has anyone figured out that corporate tax cuts are indirect tax increases to individuals? If we have a tax pie, with individuals paying 50% and corporations paying 50% and corporations get a tax cut, who makes up the difference? Joe Taxpayer by having to pay more or take a cut in government services therefore getting less for his or her tax dollar.
If I had a 16% tax rate and could write off my company car, company jet and season hockey tickets I wouldn't mind corporations getting a break but right now, it isn't fair.

    • Ya, that's been working out real well in North Korea, hasn't it?

  49. Your math doesn't necessarily follow. If the government lowers spending, or if more corporations being producing because of the tax rate cut, the total amount taken from the individuals need not change.

That said, I completely agree. The hugest tax break that corporations get is they get to write off the expenses they incur to stay alive. I don't see why they get that and people don't. If it were the same for people, we'd be writing off our food, gas, utilities, and mortgages. The only money we'd pay tax on would be the "leisure" money left over.

Too bad I was born a person and not a corporation, eh?

    • Do you folks that keep posting the progressive-economics forum links realize it is a blog-spot? These are people that are expressing an opinion, much like others that may speak out against you on this site. Except you use somebody elses opinion to back up your own. That does not make your opinion right or wrong. It would just be more beneficial to have your own facts at hand than using the opinions of others.

      • Well, since they are economists and I am not, I expect them to have a better basis for their opinions and to be more knowledgeable about economics issues than many of the commenters here. And they provide facts and figures, which are always useful to know.

You surely don't think an uninformed opinion is better than or even as good as an informed opinion?

  57. The old economic growth excuse is a lot of hot air reminding us of an old saying "Fool me twice, shame on me". As lies are concerned, there are small lies, big lies and the old Economic Growth lie. Whenever anybody wants to get elected or has nothing to say after saying "hello" in their gatherings, parties and meetings, they revert to talking and ranting about the ECONOMY using a word salad vocabulary of addictive terms in all their empty and insignificant phrases. It's as if one was talking to a drug addict with a limite vocabulary about what gets him high. In this case it's MONEY.

  58. Right wing polls, right wing press. Why are these polls not being written about? I'll answer that! Because they are not supporting Harper so the press hides them! Do you realize that on Feb 9 of this year 2011, the right wing CRTC made it OK for our news to deliberately misinform the Canadian public? Just so the right wing can win an election? That's power hungry! On that day, Feb. 9, 2011 our Canadian culture died. They did it by decietfully having us all talking about a 25 year old Dire Straits song. Our news channels are now going to report like FOX News but it will be a gradual change and it is starting with this election campaign. I am scared for Canada's future. My Dad fought on D-Day, and was wounded five times for our freedom and I don't want to lose that. Maybe you're Ok with that, I'm not!

  60. The govt has awarded corporate tax cuts for every year of the last decade and further corporate tax cuts are slated for the future. They never talk about cutting payroll taxes-why income from blood, sweat, toil, tears and trouble must be taxed to the max is a travesty.I haven't had a decent job in almost 2.5 yrs and am living on 15% of what I made before the Great Deprssion.I am not alone in this mess.
