Should the Parliamentary Budget Officer have more powers?

  1. Not too sure about more authority except access to all records but certainly complete independence from the governing party of the day. Otherwise we wind up with just another expensive rubber stamping bureaucracy. Consider him taxpayers representative in parliament

  2. The PBO is sufficiently clear of the government and party in power; however, it would be a good idea to make the PBO a full officer of Parliament such as the Auditor General, the Privacy Commissioner et al.

  3. harper doesn’t like it at all when anyone, other than himself, has governmental power, so it’s highly unlikely a budgetary officer will have expanded powers under him, as he rules with an iron fist.

  4. I am not sure if the mandate of PBO is in need of any urgent revisions, as much as the procedure and the vetting system for the selection & appointment of the Officer who would run it. We need practical safeguards for disallowing Harper’s poor judgment (two more examples of it we saw just this last week: Arthur Porter of McGill Super Hospital and Tom Flanagan of U of Alberta) dictate the choice.
