Tom Flanagan says he was trapped into child porn comments

EDMONTON – A former high-level political strategist criticized for his comments on child pornography says he was led into a trap.

Tom Flanagan of the University of Calgary says in a guest newspaper column that the question that prompted his remarks last week came out of left field and had nothing to do with the forum where he was speaking.

He also says the event was being secretly recorded on a cellphone camera, the contents of which were uploaded to the Internet and led to Flanagan’s downfall.

Flanagan said at the forum in Lethbridge, Alta., that he questioned whether people viewing child pornography should be jailed for their quote — “taste in pictures.”

Flanagan made similar remarks three years earlier to the University of Manitoba’s student newspaper.

Flanagan was a one-time strategist for Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives and for Alberta’s Wildrose party, and was a political pundit on CBC-TV — all have since denounced him.

Tom Flanagan says he was trapped into child porn comments

  1. The guys’ true colours came out, that’s all. Thank goodness. Someone who said in the same breath that he was on the mailing list of the Men/Boys Love Association, which can only happen if you formally sign up…

  2. OMG, they trapped him by asking a question and videotaping a public event! Some people’s children, eh?

  3. The 60’s PhD, former mentor to Harper, Faculty Member of a large, if bogus Economics Dept. Political campaign manager, member of the Fraser Institute, a large, if bogus “think tank” “Trapped” by a college undergrad.. Piece of advice Tom, if you get a message from a 14 year-old looking to “hook-up” at a nearby hotel, don’t go.

  4. The standard M.O. of every conservative everywhere is to claim victimhood when they get caught doing something wrong or saying something indefensible. So this response is as predictable as it is expected, and I won’t be surprised when media pundits start up with the “poor Tom, he’s a victim” editorials.

  5. Tom Flanagan: The Karl Rove of Canada? Self-labelled political strategist extraordinaire? Mr ALL-is-fair-in-politics so take advantage of ANY opening given to you (and who would have recommended and even done the exact same thing that was done to him if the shoe was on the other foot)? Mr very impressed with his own superior intellect? That Tom Flanagan was trapped?!? By kids, no less??!!

    Oh come now!

    Nobody’s buying that!!

But isn’t it odd how one week later STILL nobody has gotten a direct quote from the PM about his mentor, BFF, author of his First Nations Strategy, and appointed caretaker of his official provincial wing’s strategy in Alberta (aka the WildRose)?

And isn’t odd that not one major journalist has asked aloud 1) How is it that Mr Flanagan got on the North America Man-boy Love Association’s mailing list, and 2) Why it is he remained on it for several years? The lack of journalistic curiosity is stunning!!

  6. This comment is directed towards the other commenters, not the author of this article.

I vote liberal or green almost everytime I hit the polls, but that doesn’t stop me from seeing that Tom Flanagan is getting a seriously raw deal here. How can you guys roast him so hard just because you don’t agree with his political alignment? He’s actually one of the most liberal ‘conservatives’ there is, and the point he was trying to get at with this child pornography comment only proves that.

He doesn’t think that people who ONLY VIEW child porn need to go to jail. He still thinks that those people are pricks and that they broke the law, but he doesn’t think they need to get locked up. All he is saying is that a rehab program, or psychiatric therapy, could be more beneficial for society and for those convicted than if they were sent to prison, or “become a real criminal university” as I like to call it.

Keeping more people out of prison is a fairly liberal concept that a lot of you stoners probably get a huge hard-on for, just like me. Doesn’t mean any of us are gonna go stick them into an underage child.
