Australia dumps titles knights and dames from honours awards

Queen Elizabeth II has agreed to an Australian Cabinet recommendation to remove honours from the Order of Australia

CANBERRA, Australia — Australia has dumped the titles knights and dames from the national honours awards months after the former Prime Minister Tony Abbott sparked a furor by making the British queen’s husband an Australian knight.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced on Monday that Queen Elizabeth II had agreed to an Australian Cabinet recommendation to remove knights and dames from the Order of Australia.

Many argue that Abbott’s decision to make Prince Philip a knight on Australia’s national day on Jan. 26 was the beginning of the end of his leadership.

He survived calls from disgruntled lawmakers in his conservative government to elect a new leader at the time, but he was ousted in a leadership ballot of lawmakers in the ruling Liberal Party in September by his more progressive replacement, Turnbull.
