Obama tells graduates to beware climate change deniers

Obama says denying climate change is like arguing the moon is made of cheese

ANAHEIM, Calif. — President Barack Obama said denying climate change is like arguing the moon is made of cheese, as he issued a call to action on global warming to Saturday’s graduates of the University of California, Irvine.

Obama issued the call to the tens of thousands gathered at Angel Stadium even though he said Congress “is full of folks who stubbornly and automatically reject the scientific evidence” and say climate change is a hoax or fad.

Obama said others duck the question.

“They say, ‘Hey, look, I’m not a scientist.’ And I’ll translate that for you: what that really means is, ‘I know that manmade climate change really is happening but if I admit it, I’ll be run out of town by a radical fringe that thinks climate science is a liberal plot,”’ he said.

Obama’s address to about 8,000 graduates from the Orange County campus comes two weeks after he announced a contentious plan to dramatically cut pollution from power plants. Obama also used the address to announce a $1 billion competitive fund for communities who have experienced natural disasters to rebuild and prepare for the impact of extreme weather.

He described a political system consumed by “small things” but said Americans should be determined to do :big things” like addressing climate change, despite the type of opposition he faces from Congress.

“There’s going to be a stubborn status quo and people determined to stymie your efforts to bring about change. There are going to be people who say you can’t do something. There are going to be people who say you shouldn’t bother trying. I’ve got some experience with this myself,” Obama said.

“It’s pretty rare that you’ll encounter somebody who says the problem you’re trying to solve simply doesn’t exist. When President Kennedy set us on a course to the moon, there were a number of people who made a serious case that it wouldn’t be worth it,” he continued.

“But nobody ignored the science. I don’t remember anybody saying the moon wasn’t there or that it was made of cheese,” Obama said.

The president said today’s young dreamers are fed a steady diet of cynicism but argued they have a right to be optimistic.

“Consider this: since the time most of you graduated from high school, fewer Americans are at war,” Obama said. :More have health insurance. More are graduating from college. Our businesses have added more than nine million new jobs. And the number of states where you’re free to marry who you love has more than doubled. That’s just some of the progress you’ve seen.”

While in Orange County, Obama also raised money for the Democratic National Committee at a closed-door fundraiser at the Laguna Beach home of Getty oil heiress Anne Earhart. About 25 people paid up to $32,400 to participate in a roundtable discussion with the president.

He’s spending the rest of the Father’s Day weekend on vacation at the Rancho Mirage home of White House decorator Michael Smith and his partner, U.S. Ambassador to Spain James Costos.

Obama tells graduates to beware climate change deniers

  1. Avoid them all.

Anti-climate change, evolution, gun-control, holocaust, vaccination, fluoride, wifi , GMO’s, science, intellect…etc types.

    St Peter’s Own.

      • You and the wheat salesman should get together. Both of you seem to think changing the subject solves the problem.

        • While YOU and Obama seem to think ignoring the fact that America is selling record amounts of coal to China which in turn increases GLOBAL warming is okay. I am not sure what universe you live in that makes bringing up Obama’s contribution to global warming in China “changing the subject” but I must remind you as you are always want to remind us…”we live in a global world”….Obama can make all the restrictions he wants in the US but if he is just shifting the problem to another country, the global warming will still happen.

    • Glo-Bull Warming is the biggest fraud ever perpetrated in human history.

      • LOL so was Hudak

        • The Claim: 50 million climate refugees will be produced by climate change by the year 2010. Especially hard hit will be river delta areas, and low lying islands in the Caribbean and Pacific. The UN 62nd General assembly in July 2008 said: …it had been estimated that there would be between 50 million and 200 million environmental migrants by 2010.

The Test: Did population go down in these areas during that period, indicating climate refugees were on the move? The answer, no.

The Proof: Population actually gained in some Caribbean Island for which 2010 census figures were available. Then when challenged on these figures, the UN tried to hide the original claim from view. See: The UN “disappears” 50 million climate refugees, then botches the disappearing attempt

The Change in claim: Now it is claimed that it will be 10 years into the future, and there will be 50 million refugees by the year 2020.

      • You emptying your quiver there Billy Bob?

Cuz all these wheezes were debunked long ago.

Now off you go….it’s your bedtime

    • If you are a devout believer in Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming (CAGW) and want to convert me to your religion then I’m going to tell you how you can do it.
      The fourteen easy steps

Step 1 – Stop making predictions that don’t come true.
Step 2 – When you make a prediction, don’t just say something “might” happen.
Step 3 – Don’t live your life like you don’t believe a word you’re saying.
Step 4 – Stop the hate.
Step 5 – Stop avoiding debate.
      Step 6 – Answer questions.
Step 7 – Stop enjoying catastrophes.
      Step 8 – Don’t use invalid arguments.
Step 9 – When you are wrong, admit it and apologise.
Step 10 – Stop claiming that 97% of scientists agree that humans are warming the globe significantly.
Step 11 – Stop lying. If you think it is okay to lie if it’s for a good cause, you are wrong.
Step 12 – Rebuke your fellow Warmists if they act in an unscientific way.
Step 13 – Stop blaming everything on Global Warming.
Step 14 – Why are the only solutions always big-government “progressive” policies?

      • I’m not interested in converting you. Never have been.

Why you fools ever made this a partisan issue in the first place I don’t know…..but you set yourself up back then with the Flat Earth society. So enjoy.

  2. Too bad that Obama doesn’t know what he is talking about. Only a fool would deny that climate is changing. It always has been changing and probably always will be changing. The question that he should ask is, “Is man causing the world to warm?” Then he should ask, “What warming?” The world stopped warming more than 17 years ago. Then he should ask where the evidence is that man’s emissions of carbon dioxide are causing the world to warm. He will only be able to wave his hands and point to computer models that tell him so, but he does not know that computer models are worthless; there are more than 100 and none of them agrees with another and none shows our actual global temperature history. The poor man has been sadly misled. Unfortunately, he has the power to do much damage to our economies by his misinformation.

  3. Hey Barack. I’ve noticed that the thermal coal exports from the United States to the rest of the world have ballooned to every increasing record levels over your two terms. You have had 6 years to regulate the uncontrolled flaring of natural gas from Bakken light oil wells, which light up the North Dakota, so much so that the whole state lights up from space like the eastern seaboard around New York city (which Saskatchewan and Alberta, just across the border are dark)?

Do you think we are stupid?

    • Last time I was in Norman Wells NWT there was a huge gas flare lighting up the place.

Sask and Alberta are not dark btw…gawd you can see the photos on Google….they’re world famous.

      • Obama, like Clinton and Gore, talks a lot about the environment but does eff all, if it impacts their political prospects.

        • None of them HAVE political prospects.

You know anything the Repubs have done? Any of ‘em?

          • Willard Anthony Watts (Anthony Watts) is a blogger, weathercaster and non-scientist, paid AGW denier who runs the website wattsupwiththat.com. He does not have a university qualification and has no climate credentials other than being a radio weather announcer. His website is parodied and debunked at the website wottsupwiththat.com Watts is on the payroll of the Heartland Institute, which itself is funded by polluting industries.

          • Excerpts from the Telegraph:

A week after my colleague James Delingpole, on his Telegraph blog, coined the term “Climategate” (Note: Delingpole reports via email he got it from WUWT, commenter Bulldust coined the phrase at 3:52PM PST Nov 19th – Anthony) to describe the scandal revealed by the leaked emails from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit, Google was showing that the word now appears across the internet more than nine million times. But in all these acres of electronic coverage, one hugely relevant point about these thousands of documents has largely been missed.

The reason why even the Guardian‘s George Monbiot has expressed total shock and dismay at the picture revealed by the documents is that their authors are not just any old bunch of academics. Their importance cannot be overestimated, What we are looking at here is the small group of scientists who have for years been more influential in driving the worldwide alarm over global warming than any others, not least through the role they play at the heart of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Professor Philip Jones, the CRU’s director, is in charge of the two key sets of data used by the IPCC to draw up its reports. Through its link to the Hadley Centre, part of the UK Met Office, which selects most of the IPCC’s key scientific contributors, his global temperature record is the most important of the four sets of temperature data on which the IPCC and governments rely – not least for their predictions that the world will warm to catastrophic levels unless trillions of dollars are spent to avert it.

Dr Jones is also a key part of the closely knit group of American and British scientists responsible for promoting that picture of world temperatures conveyed by Michael Mann’s “hockey stick” graph which 10 years ago turned climate history on its head by showing that, after 1,000 years of decline, global temperatures have recently shot up to their highest level in recorded history.

Given star billing by the IPCC, not least for the way it appeared to eliminate the long-accepted Mediaeval Warm Period when temperatures were higher they are today, the graph became the central icon of the entire man-made global warming movement.

Since 2003, however, when the statistical methods used to create the “hockey stick” were first exposed as fundamentally flawed by an expert Canadian statistician Steve McIntyre, an increasingly heated battle has been raging between Mann’s supporters, calling themselves “the Hockey Team”, and McIntyre and his own allies, as they have ever more devastatingly called into question the entire statistical basis on which the IPCC and CRU construct their case.

          • Tory Telegraph hokum. You know better.

            Shame.

  4. “since the time most of you graduated from high school” (actually kindergarten) the average temperature of the earth has been stable although CO2 has increased.

The settled scientists are missing something which was exactly what G. Callendar, who linked CO2 to temperature in the 1930s, discovered when temperature in the 60′s declined when his theory said they should increase. He said “I’m missed something and I don’t understand what”.

The reason there is debate is that the predictive value of climatology is nil. Much of the research is dodgy (see the Mann hockey stick) and the models have been proven wrong.

There should also be great skepticism to anyone announcing pending doom. There should be great skepticism when government dollars are being handed out and even greater when some prophets of doom are making large sums of money and buying real estate on shorelines that they say will soon be under water.

One should also consider whether it is a coincidence that the current worries about climate change and the primary answer- to reduce the west’s standard of living- coincided with the end of the USSR. Is environmentalism as a religion just where many socialists came to roost when they needed a new anti-western cause?

    • Oh puleeze. That’s just silly.

      • Emilyone-

You seem to disagree with facts. Please tell us why. Or are you able?

        IanM

        • I agree with all the facts on climate change….you lot don’t have any.

          • Hi Emilyone-

You lot….. What does that mean? We know all about the reduction in numbers of temperature sensors and distribution, the meddling with temperature data by alarmists, the lack of warming for the past 17+ years, etc. And on and on. What facts do you bring to the table?

            IanM

        • It’s the climatologists vs the ignorant in your crowd.

I’ll listen to the climatologists thanx.

      • Willard Anthony Watts (Anthony Watts) is a blogger, weathercaster and non-scientist, paid AGW denier who runs the website wattsupwiththat.com. 5. Hey, where’s billy bob ?
    ;)

    • Hiding…. because he’s embarrassed about his ‘winner’, Hudak.

      • A swing and a miss by Emily…………………………..I don’t live in Ontario, heh.

        • We know that. Twas your judgement and prediction though.

Three swings, three misses by Billy Bob….and he’s out

          • Can hardly wait Wynne and the Ontario Lieberals to implement Hudacks austerity plan.

        • You live in hopes.

Why you always want to punish people, I don’t know….but we don’t do that here.

          • If clues were shoe you’d be barefoot.

        • Yada, yada….

    • Here

  6. While in Orange County, Obama also raised money for the Democratic National Committee at a closed-door fundraiser at the Laguna Beach home of Getty “oil heiress” Anne Earhart. About 25 people paid up to $32,400 to participate in a roundtable discussion with the president.

    • Yup, money coming in from all over. Not to Repubs tho.

      • You’re an idiot.

That is from the Macleans article, Obama fundraiser at “oil Heiress” home, the irony……………………………………no, right over Emily’s head.

        • I read what it said….yes money is coming in, even from oil people.

          Anti-intellectual old fools….your BBQ crowd…need a new hobby.

          • You still don’t get it.

        • I don’t need to. The problem is yours, not mine.

Now then, I assume you’re finished since you’ve dragged out every piece of old debunked rubbish you can find….and I have better things to do than humour you……so ta rah.

          • It is not about politics people, its about the future of mankind (or lack of). I don’t see another planet we can fly off too and carry on, once the earth is done, its done (for us at least), humankind is the biggest blight on the planet earth and she will shake us off as surely as a dog scratches off the fleas!

  7. All the deniers should travel Canada’s north, talk to the elders, check out the (lack of) glaciers in the mountains, basically open their eyes and the closed minds. Check out Neil DeGrasse-Tyson’s articles (or any other actual scientist) for the truth, although I know it is hard to find since the Harpercrite has shut down many scientific studies and has muzzled the scientists. The bottom line is we have one planet called earth, one small pale blue dot in the huge expanse of our cosmos, once we kill it we kill humankind and we are well on our way to achieving this! We should be world leaders in alternative, renewable resource studies, unfortunately our leaders represent big oil instead of us “lowly” Canadians!
