BTC: Now, it’s personal

Also mocked on the new Conservative website: Paul, Kady and Coyne.

BTC: Now, it’s personal

  1. Are you f’n kidding me?

If the Cons form the next government, does this form the basis of some neo-blacklist?

That site is appalling but hasn’t surprised me until now.

  2. This is amazing. It’s so . . . grade school. Worse than grade school.

And, just like everyone down here is swooning over Palin, there are enough dumb people who actually will find this amusing and will approve of it.

People get the government they deserve, I guess.

  3. Shouldn’t those programmers be knocking on doors? Is this Wayne’s work? I’m so confused…

  4. Policies aside, I am disgusted with the Conservative Not a Leader website. Is this how the Conservatives think of Canadians and democracy? To be ridiculed?

  5. Am I totally off base to see these as more like an affectionate homage to the three?

Maybe not Kady’s since I doubt notaleader.ca thinks favourably about the “I <3 Stephane Dion” group, but the others seem to be pretty innocent.

Disclaimer: I say this as someone who proudly dislikes all the federal parties equally.

  6. Clearly these guys have an appreciation of Kady, Coyne, Wells, Kinsella, etc.. It’s all tongue and cheek.

    This hysteria is simply stupid.

  7. I choose to take it as an affectionate tweak, for what it’s worth.

  8. Hey, the CBC is reproting that the Conservative candidate for Halifax has jsut dropped out of teh race. I guess she has a couple of criminal records or something that nobody new about.
Wil she be on the notaleader seat too?

  9. And they’re right about Coyne not updating his blog enough (but I’m still not going to vote for them).

  10. THis is a travesty. Not only have the Conservatives published a blacklist, they have accused Paul of liking jazz. Some things have no place in polite discourse.

  11. I don’t see any mocking.

  12. So is everyone with a journalism degree out to get harper, just like elections Canada and the courts? Everyone who ever attended university?

  13. By putting journalists into the Dionbook, they are essentially ensuring coverage.

  14. Any press is better than no press!. By the way the site is hilarious and this election is getting better and better!

  15. Here comes the liberal bloggers and the enraged, “Oh Harper’s a fascist, neo-con, bush doctrine, McCarthyism..,” blah blah blah.

I’m a conservative, I like Macleans, with all its ITQ, and Wells, and Coyne, and Steyn, and I think poking fun at the MSM is, well, cute. It shows the Tories are having fun, and not just trying to destroy the reputation of prominent Liberals. Note all the pages are tongue-in-cheek. No insults (at Macleans, at least) are being thrown.

I’m surprised that no one at macleans caught the references sooner. But I guess that’s a good thing; you guys are busy.

Take it as a compliment, you guys are popular enough to be referenced on an attack website, underscoring your influence on Canadian political journalism.

  16. Other bloggers are being mocked there too!

Jason Cherniak, Red Tory, Far and Wide, they’re mocking average citizens that voice their opinion!

Someones out of control in the Conservative Party machine. This is wrong, very, very wrong.

  17. It’s actually quite funny. They even poke fun at themselves.

  18. Ok, are the Conservatives trying to be the serious, steady hands on the levers of power, or are they auditioning for Last Comic Standing? I find the disconnect between Harper’s message and their out-of-control website crew rather jarring.

  19. Mr. Wells, maybe you’ll do these guys a favour by pointing out that you can only read Tom Flanagan when accompanied by the mitigation for soul and psyche of Tommy Flanagan.

  20. harmless ribbing

  21. Yes, this is exactly what we need. More navel gazing from the press. Great post Aaron.

  22. Excellent point on Tommy Flanagan, Sisyphus.

I took the Inkless entry on Dionbook to be entirely harmless. My friend Richard Peregrino is really upset though.

  23. I’ll hazard a guess there is no one in the Harper sphere, including those who intend to vote for him, who is not irony impaired. And in Wayne’s case, irony absent entire. To wit:

There is no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary.

    — Brendan Behan

  24. It’s a good piece of humour. I think it’s poor political strategy as it doesn’t directly related to the campaign.

Paul’s rivalry with the Paris Cable Companies is amusing.

I’m a little disappointed they failed to mention The Western Gazette as a group and didn’t make Wherry a member.

  25. Holding up private citizens for ridicule…how impressive. You know the Liberals could have a field day with some of the Blogging Tories (ho, ho…could they ever) and I’d be the first to condemn them for it.

Every Conservative supporter should be ashamed of this.

  26. Tongue in cheek? Maybe. Any which way you slice it though it is pathetic. It’s more of the same empty nonsense. Policy???? Anyone???? Yes Harper likes his family and vetrans and puppies and ice cream (I’m still waiting on the others to come out with adds attacking the family and veterans….) And unles I miss my guess I’m supposed to think Dion is the most worthless excuse for a human ever to live. Is it so much to ask that the Tories stop abusing everyone, wasting my time with mindless commercials depicting Harper as Mr. Rogers’ long lost twin and tell me something about the policies that were so important they couldn’t wait to be properly debated in the House a couple of weeks from now? And for the Tories who feign being indignant when Harper and co. are shown as mean- you are supporting the absolute masters of mud and attack adds, you’d better be able to take it when people call you on it! I hate all of the current parties but I really have to say that I never thought the Tories would so continunally take Canadian politics to new lows.

  27. Personally, if they want to send me extra web traffic, they can knock themselves out. Maybe this was what that one suppoedly over-eager webguy was doing before he was creating Puffin-Gate.

  28. Thankfully, Kady, Paul, and Scott each have a good sense of humour. Had the Colbert Report published these faux Facebook sites on its webpages, I would consider it good humour. The problem is when it comes from a political party such as the Conservatives seeking the election of its candidates. It makes the Conservative Party look childish. Do we want children running our country?

  29. You know, when I think of the problems facing Canadian politics today, one of them was not “too much of a sense of humour”. Seriously. We complain that our political candidates are all faceless automatons and then we complain louder when our campaigns contain the slightest trace of personality?

Also, for some reason, that speech bubble next to Paul Wells saying “I’m Paul Wells” just killed me. I can’t even explain it. I have a pathological obsession with speech bubbles.

  30. Ti-guy, get a sense of humour already

  31. Hey RyanD : When it comes to ironic you left wing nuts take the cake. My favourite is Dion starting off his campaign by begging and pleading for someone to vote for him in Quebec, did people see that display I was embarassed for the guy and then directly calling another leader a liar not once as if it were a mistake the an attempt to rephrase like lacking in credibility … no way …twice and definitely on purpose – that is the mark of a very desparate man who has just crossed a line that even us Conservatives wouldn’t even consider to cross. Though I acn not balme him imagine going down in history as the man who lead the LPC into ignonimity! Can any left wing nut possibly be honest with themselves here and imagine what this forum would be like if Harper did that? really now this is irony.

  32. Am I totally off base to see these as more like an affectionate homage to the three?

Ding ding ding! There’s nothing malicious on any of those pages as far as I can see. They’re also very obviously people who read the blogs pretty intently, considering how well they seem to have nailed the little details.

  33. “Authorized by the Registered Agent for the Conservative Party of Canada.”

Juvenile. No…puerile. We should be ashamed of this so-called “New Government”. I have seen more dignified high school council campaigns.

  34. No respect for copyright or trademark either. This isn’t fair dealing and we don’t do parody rights in Canada.

  35. Send it out via the media….”this is Conservative puberty”

  36. Wayne makes an excellent point. If Harper had called Dion a liar, the main stream media would be going berserk, Harper the bully, etc… But Dion uses it, repeatedly, and it’s treated by the media like he’s using a term of endearment.

  37. Uh….ya Wayne, I’m a “left wing nut”….you know nothing about me but you are right. Forget the fact that I have served in the armed forces and am staunchly pro life (not typical “left wing nut” fare). So lets examine your reasoning. I said I don’t support any party. I said I wanted the Tories to stop being abusive and wasting my time with fluff. I said I wanted to know about policy. These things clearly make me an insane Communist (it couldn’t be that you are an unoriginal, mindless right wing ideologue). What was I thinking??!!! Substance?! Policy discussion during a campaign?! You are right Wayne. Here’s an idea fella- try a new slur (left wing nut is TIRED) and try having one thought (just ONE) that wasn’t fed to you directly by the CPC. Newsflash Wayne- YOU DO NOT represent the center in this country. Thus, everyone to the left of YOU is not a left wing nut.

  38. Holding up private citizens for ridicule…how impressive. You know the Liberals could have a field day with some of the Blogging Tories (ho, ho…could they ever) and I’d be the first to condemn them for it.

Every Conservative supporter should be ashamed of this.

Sounds like somebody wants a Dionbook page of his own.

  39. Uhhhhhhh…..

They’re, like, way done gone folks (8:30pm EDT).

Could it be that their mission, which they have clearly chosen to accept, is to trivialize everything?

    .

  40. Hey all you zany Conservative laff-riots; I don’t care if they’re joshing about public figures like Wells or O’Malley, but they’ve referenced a few private citizens and that strikes me as inappropriate.

And besides…Conservatives don’t do humour. That’s a fact; learn it, live it, celebrate it.

Sounds like somebody wants a Dionbook page of his own.

As long as it features a Puffin pooping on me, at which point I will convulse with laughter, no doubt.

  41. Ti-guy, the polls have got you down I know, but the race is young and anything can happen in this media age. And if the worst case scenario occurs, and the Conservatives are returned to Parliament with a majority, hey it’s just politics. There’s more to life than politics. So take a deep breath and lighten up.

  42. Ti-guy, the polls have got you down I know,

Oh, spare me the (doubtless) fascinating psychoanalysis. I think Conservative propaganda is witless and insulting to Canadians. And that’s the straight poop…and not from a puffin’s cloaca either.

  43. Harper personally apologized to Dion today for the actions of an overzealous webmaker.

    Now that’s a class act.

Dion accepted the apology while continuing to jibe Harper for his tone.

Of course Dion would never consider apologizing to Harper for calling Harper a LIAR.

Steady leadership and a class act.

Dion? Well he’s just on perpetually offended mode isn’t he.

In five weeks from now, Dion will feel more comfortable, tut tutting his pupils from the lofty heights of his professor lectern.

  44. “Of course Dion would never consider apologizing to Harper for calling Harper a LIAR.”

Well, that’s easy: it’s because Harper lied. Not even the irresponsible Conservative web guys repeated the lie.

I think it also raises questions about the disarray of the Conservative ‘death star’ war room. Why is no one vetting these websites? Is Harper actually represented by the website? Is anyone with an internet connection allowed to make a conservative website?

  45. Harper personally apologized to Dion today for the actions of an overzealous webmaker.

    Now that’s a class act.

Yeah, reeks of class. Or puffin poop.

  46. Harper, a couple of days ago when he asked for writ drop:

“I see no reason to go personal or nasty against the other leaders.”

Harper’s party has been running negative ads and websites for 20 months, and the entire time since the campaign began. Can Harper not lead his own backroom, or was he less than sincere on Sunday? If the latter, what does that say about his apology? Hollow much?

  47. So I just tried to link over there:

Do you think it’s easy to maintain websites?
We apologize for the inconvenience. High traffic levels are putting Dionbook over it’s bandwidth allotment.

Aaargh! Not only are they wasting time on matters that have nothing to do with policy, but they can’t get its and it’s straight.

Can it be that a political party can have too much money to run a campaign?

  48. Andrew: “I think it also raises questions about the disarray of the Conservative ‘death star’ war room.”

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

  49. Can it be that a political party can have too much money to run a campaign?

You mean they paid cash money for notaleader.ca?

I find that hard to believe.

  50. It’s 3:30 a.m. here in Ontario & I just tried to link, by clicking on the names above, to the Con website. It says I can’t as there is too much traffic volume there. At 3:30 in the morning? C’mon – something’s afoot, hmmmmm…

  51. Here’s the actual message I get:

“Do you think it’s easy to maintain websites?

We apologize for the inconvenience. High traffic levels are putting Dionbook over it’s bandwidth allotment.”

  52. I’m thinking that when the technical problem that brought down Dionbook is resolved, Dionbook will be a truncated feature.

  53. I love Dionbook, it’s really very funny. My favourite part is Ralf Goodale’s picture and how he likes to be angry or something along those lines, I’ll have to check when the site is back on.
