Dated reference of the day

Industry Minister Tony Clement, responding to a question from Liberal Bonnie Crombie.

“We all know that money for nothing leads to dire straits.”

The Dire Straits’ song Money for Nothing was released in June 1985.

Even Jason Kenney grimaced at this one.

Dated reference of the day

  1. Ouch.

    • To be fair, that cassette just arrived in Calgary last month…

  2. yeah, that’s the way to do it……

  3. That was a great song, so the reference transcends the originating date. Clueless, on the other hand, sucked.

I now dislike Tony Clement *very* slightly less.

  4. Great Song and Marty is damn fine guitarist he has this one CD out with Chet Atkins and they recorded it in the guys kitchen .. talk about excellent string manipulation .. I wish I could play 1/1000 of those guys.

    • Mark is pretty good too.

  5. I knew Tony Clement back in the 80s at U. of T. He wasn’t cool then either…

    • Any good stories?

  6. I’m no fan of Tony Clement (to put it mildly), but he can’t win this. If he had referenced a more current song, he would have looked like a middle-aged man trying to pretend to be young and hip.

Perhaps the best solution is to avoid music altogether.

(By the way, it could have been worse: he could have referenced “My Sharona”.)

  7. Can it be true that such dorks can wind up as cabinet ministers?

  8. Any particular reason we want “cool” as the criterion for a cabinet minister? Dorky policy-and-procedure wonk with a brain and a sense of duty and responsibility for the public trust is passé?

Keep the Fonz out of cabinet, ok? There’s your dated reference of the evening. Now I’m off to find a shark to jump…

    • Madeyoulook nailed it. “Cool” politicians frighten me. I’d rather have an uncharismatic wonk who has his soul laid bare for all the world to see.

      • Wow. CR you’ve hit the jackpot then. Canada today must be like a never-ending Air Supply 8-track, except with the kids from Growing Pains now as ministers and some tubby flatfoot who likes to tag and run holding court. So anti-cool its cool, in a morose way.

        • Poor Dan. He seems all out of love. So much he’s gonna have to make love out of nothing at all.

  9. What ever happened to “you have to spend money to make money”?

  10. Tony Clement and Gerry Ritz must be hilarious together. Tag-team Conservative Stand-up. What could be better than that
