From the magazine, Chapter 4 of our account of the 2011 campaign. Featuring such other dispatches from the Dept. of It Looked Like a Good Idea at the Time as Ignatieff’s “Rise Up!” video.

Hey look: In which the appeal to Quebecers’ sovereigntist instincts doesn’t work

  1. Not that many care, but for those interested in the phenomenon of separatism and sovereignty movements within relatively stable states, the Scottish version of the Bloc won a majority government in the Parlamaid na h-Alba. In a mixed-member proportional representation system, no less.

    • I'm quite interested in whether they ask a clear separation question in their promised referendum, and in the UK government's opinion regarding both the clarity of the question and the legitimacy of a 50%+1 result. In any case the referendum seems doomed.

    • OMG I thought the finish of the election would get rid of spammers here at MacLeans. Guess not.

  2. Excellent analysis Wells. Top-drawer! The next four years are going to be fascinating. I can't see the NDP maintaining it's new-found strength. The Conservatives are in for at least one more election win before the left either picks one party to back fully or continues to split the vote in the Conservatives' favour. Harper 2019 anyone?
