‘It’s being considered’

The Prime Minister talks to Postmedia about OAS, China and Iran.

Postmedia: There are Canadians who are wondering, ‘What does it mean to me?’ So that’s why I asked the question. Are you in a position to tell us whether or not the OAS eligibility is being considered as an option?

Harper: Absolutely, it’s being considered. But what we have to be clear on is that we are not looking at changes that are going to affect people that are currently in retirement or approaching retirement. We’ve been very clear on that.

Postmedia: Should anybody over the age of 50 be concerned?

Harper: I’ve just said we’re examining these things. The government hasn’t taken final decisions, so I don’t want to speculate on particulars. But I think we have been very clear in our electoral mandate that we’re not going to make any changes to seniors or to pensions in any way that deals with the current deficit.

‘It’s being considered’

  1. Govts always do unpopuar things in the first year of their term, in hopes voters will forget it by the time the elections roll around 3 years later.

So I expected unpopular things….but they shouldn’t be purely dumb things

Harper has a political tin ear.

He’s going to blow his majority the same way he blew the budget.

  2. Happy to hear the prime minister is doing all he can to deliver on his promise to balance the budget in order to provice tax exemptions to those, millionnaires or paupers, who have gym memberships.

  3. Come to think of it, will memberships at golf club be covered by those exemptions?  We wouldn’t want to discriminate against those among us seniors who can afford this wonderful activity.

  4. “I think we have been very clear in our electoral mandate”

What the Hell is THAT supposed to mean???  That phrase makes it sound as though our Prime Minister doesn’t have the slightest understanding of what the word “mandate” means.

Come to think of it, that would explain a lot of Tory rhetoric…

    • Are u on of them there radical fellers bud? It’s people like you what cause unrest!

Maybe the PM had a shot before the interview, he’s been under a lot of pressure lately.

    • They understand entirely what mandate means. They just don’t want it to turn to manmarriage.

  5. I’m so glad Harper is going to China and will be able solve this problem with Syria.
