Maclean’s on the Hill: Tom Mulcair on the attack on Nice

The Maclean’s Ottawa bureau gives you a weekly audio briefing on all things #cdnpoli

podcast

Each week, the Maclean’s Ottawa bureau sits down with Cormac Mac Sweeney to discuss the headlines of the week. This week, another terror attack in France claims at least 84 lives. A Tunisian-born man allegedly drove a truck into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, before being shot and killed by police. To discuss the attack and Canada’s next steps, we’re joined by NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, a dual citizen of Canada and France.

After attacks like these, we notice a troubling rise in Islamophobia—but one group may be making an effort to try and get Muslims and their communities to better engage with each other. Their plan is to raise a Canadian flag outside every mosque in the country. We speak with Jawad Rathore, who is spearheading the campaign.

You can add another name to the ballot in the federal Conservative leadership race. Longtime MP Tony Clement has officially launched his campaign to take on the top job. Clement is here to explain why he’s the best candidate for the position, and how he plans to bring new voters into the Tory fold.

Finally, next year Canada will mark its 150th birthday and the capital is planning a year-long celebration. But what will Ottawa offer to all Canadians—and will all the projects be ready for 2017? To speak more about the sesquicentennial plans, we’re joined by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.
