Polls put wind in NDP’s sails as leadership convention opens

As things get underway here at the NDP leadership convention in downtown Toronto, Nanos Research has released a poll saying that nearly half (49 per cent) of all Canadians would trust the New Democrats to be at the helm of the federal government.

Pollster Nik Nanos told the Globe and Mail

what this shows is that the elevation of the NDP to the Official Opposition, as the party with the second greatest number of seats in the House of Commons, not just elevates it as an opposition but also elevates it in terms of perhaps someday forming a government… They’ve moved up to the next level.

Also this week, an Environics poll put the NDP’s national support at 30 per cent, neck and neck with the Conservatives (the Liberals, meanwhile, are a leap behind at 20 per cent). It’s a nice boost just before a leadership convention.
