Runaway train

Stephen Harper says he’s moved on from his interest in debating Michael Ignatieff.

“The train has left the station,” the Conservative leader told reporters in Ottawa on Sunday. “The networks made their decision and we have accepted their decision.”

Runaway train

  1. This could be decisive… it is hard to see Coyne supporting anyone making train references.

  2. Bruk, bruk, bruk Stevie.

    • If it's high speed rail Wells will be all over it!

  4. Bruk, bruk, bruk Stevie.

    • Does the Tory campaign plane look like the one in Chicken Run?

      • Well, it's certainly um….yellow. LOL

  5. "It seems no one can help me now
    I'm in too deep
    There's no way out
This time I have really led myself astray

    CHORUS
    Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a one way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here no there
    "
    Had to be done…..

    • Maybe Harper will sing this at his next recital.

  7. What a silly response. Is Harper admitting that he is not a leader and that the networks are running Canada?

There has been an offer of venue, moderator and one debater. Harper is free to choose to be the second debater. His choice need not be determined by any network decision unless he allows the networks to have that kind of influence over his actions.

    • Your comment " Is Harper admitting that he is not a leader and that the networks are running Canada"? is right on the money. Yes, the corporate news owners (specifically the CTV) do indeed run the tory party. Sad but true.

  9. Would that be… the Chicken Train???

In my Canada, we listen to our Moms.

  25. I sense a topic which could finally rate the elusive five-bull rating, perhaps?

  26. Stephen, this debate issue will cling to you like your many psychopathologies.

  31. "High Noon Debate" certainly has the ability to be this campaign's "black tie gala" flub that costs Harper his long sought after majority.

I find it astounding how a man can be such a formidable politician while also being such a lousy campaigner.

  34. The networks made their decision

You mean, all those networks that immediately decided to host said debate provided the parties would commit to show? Those networks?

  40. The Cons are still trying to run a classic front-runner's campaign. It seems they think that train can't be derailed.

  43. I've been saying for a while now that a one-on-one debate would be good for both leaders, and that Harper looks weak for retracting his challenge. Someone a lot smarter than I disagrees, though.

David Frum says (can't link) it's all an attempt to get the opposition parties to turn on each other. Harper knows perfectly well Ignatieff would like to be alone with him, so why challenge him only to reverse course? To get Iggy talking about how only he can replace Harper. This is both annoying and threatening to Layton and Duceppe, so they'll spend more time attacking the Liberal leader and not so much attacking him. That's Frum's thinking, anyway, but I find it kind of persuasive.

  46. It's clear now that Harper wants to reduce the number of debates, which is understandable for someone with a big lead. But of course, he would have liked to have the usual debates had been changed to 1-1 format with Ignatieff. This is also understandable. Iggy vs Harper would have been good theater, but it looks like it won't happen.
