The bubble is getting crowded

The Globe surveys Conservative reticence.

In Calgary East, Tory incumbent Deepak Obhrai has come under fire for being the only candidate not to respond to an invitation for an all-candidates debate on Tuesday … Calgary-Nose Hill Tory incumbent Diane Ablonczy has also indicated she may boycott any all-candidate forum. But this shyness is hardly an Alberta-only phenomenon. Julian Fantino, who snatched the Toronto-area riding of Vaughan away from the Liberals in a by-election last November, refused to attend all-candidates debates in that campaign and has indicated he’s unlikely to do so now.

The bubble is getting crowded

  1. Tories have been being controlled by Harper and his handlers from day one. They are now in a position that they are not familiar with, speaking for themselves. They are scared that if they say the wrong word, Harper will turf them. They are just like the puppy that a bully beats and the poor puppy just wants to please but dosen't know how to.

  3. Cowardly Cons.

If they won't take open questions from the public, media or won't meet other local candidates in public debates, don't vote for them.

    • I live in SK, and I don't think any of the cons participated in town halls last election campaign. Yet they continue to win by large margins. Even the likes of lukiwski.

      • It seems to me that they avoided town halls in Alberta for the past few elections, but I don't know if they all did. Arrogance or cowardice?

        • Orders from the top, that's what I think. It sure makes the individual MPs look bad — as in weak and stupid and not having a thought in their head that their job is to represent their constituents. My MP is one of the Top Ten most silent muzzled minions in the HoC!

          My cup overfloweth.

          • absolutely. A lot of what would get said to an all-Alberta crowd would probably hurt nationally.

          • I lived in Alberta and I have said for years now that it is Alberta that will separate from Canada long before Quebec will. They absolutely hate central and eastern Canada.

  5. With media moderator questions likely to be:

"Two minutes to respond for each of you. Why, in your opinion are the conservatives evil?"

    It's no surprise.

Last years leadership debate was a joke, with the three other parties hurling accusations and invective at Harper, with the moderator smiling on.

    • Chet…no one has ever asked a question like that. Seriously. Use a better argumant.

      • You're talking about the real world. Chet posts about the world inside his head.

    • The PM is always the target of the opposition leaders. It would be so much easier never to face anyone who disagreed with you, of course.

    • There wasn't any debate last year, nor was there an election.

    • You've posted this question in a couple of different places. Interesting how you always seem to have it on the tip of your tongue.

    • Which debate are you talking about Chet? The one which Obhrai refuses to show up at, to be held in the heart of Calgary. Yeah, that's a known anti-tory stronghold.

      Get a life.

On the bright side, by refusing to come to the debates, any lingering doubts I had about perhaps not giving the CPC candidate in my riding a fair shake have been neatly erased.

  7. Have they forgotten they're employees?

And that we, their employers, have the right to question them?

  8. Have they forgotten they're employees?

And that we, their employers, have the right to question them?

    • Yes they have forgotten that. Fire them!

  9. Times are changing. This government did nothing but fight for the last six months. They didn't listen to the people when it was said not to go to the polls. In protest this time I am voting GREEN. Our system of government needs to change. No more political parties, we vote for the person that best suits our constituency. They are elected for four years and can serve no more than two terms. We vote for a leader that best serves our country under the same terms. This way they they would have to listen to the people they serve or they are gone. This spending and promising has to stop.

      The CPC thanks you

      • Well, it depends on the riding. In some ridings in Alberta the Green Party came second.

To get rid of the Conservatives, you need to think about which candidate is most likely to beat the Conservative IN THAT RIDING. In some ridings it's the Liberal, in others the NDP, and in a few it's the Green. On the other hand, whoever you vote for gets a couple of bucks. unless the Conservatives manage to get rid of this democratic way of funding political parties.

  11. The honorable Gerry Ritz floated around in that bubble last election and won huge. It is better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. To use the expression he used on the listeria scandal that hit his portfolio, he didn't want to die a death by a 1000 cuts, cold cuts that is….badum bumph. The saddest part is, the contempt the Cons have for Canada is ignored as long as they hear meaningless scaremongering.

    • I wonder where Rob Anders is hiding out this time?

  13. bubble bubble toil and trouble…
Harper can't speak without a teleprompter and muzzles most of his lackeys.
It is hard to make sense and remain consistent when telling lies.

  15. Don't forget John Baird's refusal to take part in a panel with David Mcguinty and Paul Dewar on CTV's Power Play last night, instead insisting on appearing alone in his own segmentprior to theirs. Is he that afraid to engage and potentially be pulled off message?

    • And CTV acquiesced to Baird's request? Missed it.

      • Yeah, why not just say, fine Mr Baird; we'll have the discussion without you present to share your views. I have a feeling he'd show up.

Evan Solomon is far too accommodating on his show; some days it's just a big old talking points-aganza.

        I miss you, Don Newman!

  29. This post is for the people voting Tory this election. You must get rid of Harper. He is bringing you (us) all down. When the liberals pulled the sponsorship scandal Canadians sent the liberals a strong message (yes, even liberals did not vote liberal in that election). We must do the same to Harper. Do not reward him with a majority. It will send the wrong message. Turf Harper, have a leadership review and take back your party. You deserve better than Harper. We all do! I hope that all Canadians send Harper a strong message that we do not approve of him. The economy will not suffer. Canadians have the richest country in the world with our abundant natural resources worth trillions of dollars. We will do fine without Harper. We need a Canadian government, not a Harper government.

    • Alas turfing Harper also sends the wrong message. That the Liberals have somehow shown they are ready to lead again. Can't we just descend into anarchy for the next 4-5 years instead?

    if you go to http://my.ewb.ca/events/
there is no debate planned for April 2011.
