The Mercer challenge

Rick Mercer puts some money on the table.

Ok hell i will rent massey put the camera’s in place and moderate the Harper Iggy smackdown.

Ok i’ll produce a Iggy Harper debate. 50 grand to a charity of their choice. I’ll find a broadcaster or 4.

The Mercer challenge

  1. I would absolutely love to see a debate between Harper and Iggy – but I can understand 100% was Harper has thrown it into reverse following his initial "challenge".

I love how Harper has gotten himself into this mess as a result of just having to get in one more coalition jab.

  3. Smackdown a better choice than having it masquerade as a debate. More like simulataniously filmed infomercials with cross productional interference.

  5. Does anyone out there know when the televised debates started having the leaders sitting at a table? Was the sit-down debate format adopted at the request of any particular leader?

  6. Stephen Harper is such a bashful coquette.

  9. Could Rick also arrange a Libby Davies vs Shelly Glover Texas cage match?f
A John Baird vs David McGuinty open palm spankdown?
Build up the undercard and you'll raise some serious money for charity

  11. It appears as though the “Harper Backed Out” story line is, in fact, false and that the Liberals “quietly” refused. This seems to be part of a broader pattern of stories concluding Mr. Ignatieff doing ‘good’ while Harper is doing ‘bad’ this first week.

Meanwhle the polls are showing precisely the opposite, with Mr. Ignatieff’s personal approval ratings are at historical lows for a Liberal leader (behind even Layton in most) Harper’s numbers appear to be solidifying into majority territory, with imporant ‘internals’ showing indicators such as ‘trust to lead the economy’ being sky high for Harper and rock bottom for Mr. Ignatieff.

The media’s reportage is reaching Orwellien levels.

    • No, I think that the parties, and the broadcast consortium made the right decision in that if there was only going to be two debates (french / english) it had to include the leaders of the parties currently represented in the HOC. I would think that anyone looking at this objectively could agree.

What we have now, is an offer that has been extended for additional debates, including a format of the Prime Minister vs. the Leader of the Official Opposition, and on top of that, there are parties outside of the broadcast consortium willing to host. The ball remain in Mr. Harper's court. Do you want to debate Iggy? Heaven forbid if we added something to elevate the political discourse in this country.

    • It may "appear" so to you, but it is not true. But, if you insist on believing that, then you can rest easy, because Ignatieff is raring to go and so Harper only has to murmur "yes" and it will definitely happen. So, your problem (Ignatieff refusing) is solved then and the debate will happen.

    • Well, Harper is the one who is refusing the debate, so…

    • no.

  13. Good one Rick. Harper will never agree but you should push this. Canadians deserve to hear them debate. You could try to embarass him into it. Canadians would rally and help you do this I'm sure. We need to hear something from Harper other than coalition this, coalition that. I wont hold my breath though.

  17. As a longtime Liberal (current independent) it saddens me how much wishful thinking has replaced critical thought among Liberal supporters. I appreciate the media isn’t helping much. I fear that come election night many of my Liberal friends will be shocked to see the results which they should have seen coming back when we had the option of a real leadership convention.

It should not surprise any of us when Harper takes his majority.

    • Craig's list pays well does it?

      • I think charles must be an American. charles, Canadians do not register as independents or as members of a political party. You should stop pretending to be one.

        • hmmm…wonder if the casting call extended into US craigslist…

        • There was one regular Conbot on here last year (can't remember who) who made reference to what we should be doing on "tax day, April 15". It's amazing how easy they slip up sometimes.

    • Independent? Suuuuuure…

    • Does the thought of a Conservative majority concern you charles?
As an independent, your vote can go either way.
While you seem certain of a Stephen Harper majority (a distinct possibility), you don't indicate whether or not you support it.

  19. Craig's list pays well does it?

  20. Debating Ignatieff 1-on-1 is the last thing in the world that Harper wants or needs. Ignatieff is the furthest thing from a slouch when it comes to debating/thinking on his feet and another (much hyped) debate would give him another very visible opportunity to show Canada that he isn't the scary, grainy, black and white monster the CPC has been portraying him as.

I suspect there were some pretty blue words screamed at CPC headquarters when Harper issued that challenge.

  31. oooooooooh is Mercer and the CBC in trouble if Harper gets a majority!

    • Is that because he's so big on getting revenge on those he perceives as his enemies?

  33. What candidate Ignatieff is doing, is hedging his bet!

No doubt, he will want 2 one-on-one debates (one french and one english) and if for some reason he doesn't come out of those debates as the clear winner, he can then be accompanied by all other opposition leaders to help him out in the three-on-one debates – two to be sure.

Mr.Ignatieff is a smart man, but courageous he is not.

He knows very well how to hedge his bet (were he allowed to do so) but he will not agree to a one-on-one debate if the three-on-one debates are not to be following the one-on-one debates. Ask him.
