The Liberals take the lead for the first time in four years

The April polling averages from threehundredeight.com.

If the Liberals continue on the trend line of the last few months, they should be at 100% by the fall.

  1. Did you know disco record sales were up 400% in the year ending 1976? If these trends continue… Ayyyyyyyyyy!

    • LOL, but they remained hot sellers two years later, in 1978, so by these standards, LPC should form government — big majority landslide wipeout style — in 20105.

    • Wow. That was almost relevant to this thread, and this country.

      • He tricked us into linking to that; he’s a trickster.

        • He’s certainly obsessed with media balance and the liberal media conspiracy bs. That’s his right i guess.

          • Sure. Conspiracy.

Because nothing says transparency like holding an off-the-record press briefing with hand-picked reporters before going into damage control mode on a scandal that threatens to bring down the entire White House.

I think I’ll have an extra-large bowl of ice cream this evening.

          • Perhaps you shouldn’t cite articles that contain updates and corrections as evidence of a liberal media conspiracy?
Even if every word of this is true, what does it prove? That the media is liberal, or that ALL politicians can misuse power? I don’t see the next Republican prez acting any differently in the same situation. That isn’t right, but there it is.

    • Pretty sure they did that after the last election.

    • Harper had CRA target environmental groups. 900 charitable organizations were audited, at a cost of tens of millions, with exactly one losing its charitable status (a physician advocacy organization).

  2. Aaaahhhh…you should show the one they had on at issue last night – the red line straight up and the blue one headed for the basement[25%??] Had Andrew tweeting jeepers!!! all over the place.

Just polling, but they point the panel made that stuck in my mind is that this may be the beginning of the disintegration of the Cons sense of invincibility that they have had since they took office. Even if JT never becomes PM the opposition should thank him for finally helping to crack the iron helmet Harper lugs around with him. The word is out now, the psychological barrier crossed – SH can be beat.

    • ” the Cons sense of invincibility that they have had since they took office. ”
Huh? They started out in office with a precarious minority government. Are you completely daft?

      • Like many CPC beliefs, it is entirely possible it has little connection to actual reality.

Yes, all conservatives believe stupid things. All liberals believe true things (thought I would write it for you).

        • Wow, what a withering refutation.

      • Are you calling Coyne daft. And would you care to show me the evidence that there was any likelihood of them ever losing any election, even in a minority parliament?
Harper continually put a gun to the head of Dion and MI precisely because he knew they didn’t want an election they couldn’t win[ they were broke]. The conbot glee team were on here daily daring the liberals to pull the plug if they didn’t like it. Were you one of them? Or are you exercising your option for moronic revision now instead?

        • The problem that I see with where this discussion is heading is that you’re mixing up concepts — (a) looking back with 20/20 hindsight at the last elections that the CPC won, versus (b) Conservatives in general somehow asserting that they are “invincible” now and forever, which I dispute. I think most Conservatives probably realize that they’re in a very tough battle. E.g., why else would they spend so much time attacking Justin Trudeau etc.? I think in that respect, you’re attributing characteristics to them that they by and large don’t possess. Of course you can point to certain partisan buttheads who boast about how awesome their team is, etc. All political parties have hubristic douchebags like that in their ranks. It goes with the territory in partisan politics.

You know, there’s a difference between someone thinking that, on balance, they were likely going to win an election a couple of years ago, versus thinking that they’re invincible now and forever. Just sayin’.
I think what’s really going on here is that you obsessively hate Conservatives so much that you automatically and globally attribute to them every negative personality characteristic imaginable, no matter what the actual factual basis.

          • If there ever was a time when it looked like the tories would lose an election in the last 7 years[or the liberals win one] please make the case.

Now I think you need to go watch the same at issue that i watched. Then come back and tell me why i was wrong to take Coyne[ and all the panelists] seriously. How they got it wrong, so i did too.

Then i think you need to put your head under the cold water tap. This is the second time you’ve rather childishly stamped your little feet that it matters whether i hate Harper obsessively or not. I think i have the right o draw whatever conclusions that i choose from the reasonably wide selection of sources i get the time to look at. If you don’t like that tough. Quite frankly i don’t give a crap what you think i obsess about. So grow up, stop being so personal and comment like an adult. I know you can do it if you try.
Since we’re throwing cheap pseudo personal analysis around, catch this.
I don’ think you’re not really mad at me, just the way the media covers Harper. Which is after all where folks like me draw their impressions of the man and his style – so, don’t shoot the reader eh.

          • Sorry, I didn’t realize that Andrew Coyne was an official spokesperson for the Harper Government. I learn so much from enlightened progressive people like you. Thanks once again for showing me how benighted and uninformed I am.

          • Since you insist on seeing it that way…you’re welcome.

          • In the last election, the enlightened Coyne voted for the corrupt and cynical Liberals, his reasoning being to reduce corruption and cynicism.
19% of voters agreed with Coyne. Clearly Coyne is perfectly in touch with the motivations and desires of Canadians (the remaining 81% don’t count).
More generally, I find half of Coyne’s columns of interest these days, the other half I find to be shrill nonsense along the usual lines: democracy is dead, only proportional representation can save us, the government hates us all and deserves our contempt, Canada is doomed (unless we do what Coyne tells us to).

          • Looking at and taking into account of what has transpired since Harper won (stole) his majority, Coyne is 100% right about everything he said about Harper and the Cons. Govt. Recent events has proven him to be correct and Canadians are now seeing and experiencing what Coyne was talking about with this Govt.

          • Looking at what has transpired… I’d say you’re out of your tree. For a truthcop you seem to have a little bit of trouble with the truth. But hey, keep trying, you’ll get the hang of it someday.

          • He’s right, you hate Harper, you despise Conservatives in general, you do attribute every negative characteristic imaginable to them regardless of truth, and you’re obsessive about it. The fact that you deny it is hilarious.

          • Tweedlee and tweedle dumb.

          • Yes, you’re correct, all conservatives are the same. Just as we were saying. We share all negative characteristics. Identically. That’s why we are called conbots, by you and all enlightened individuals.

          • You two should form the, it’s just so mean to be mean to Cons whiners club. Charge membership fees, make a bundle. You might even be able to franchise it.

          • The club already exists, and you know it. We all think the same. We are identically bad. You can attribute all and any negative characteristics to us. That’s why you call us conbots. How else could that happen? Of course there are no fees, that would be like paying money to ourselves, which makes no sense. Some people like to call this club the Conservative party, but enlightened individuals like you should call us the conbot club. Good thing Canada has enlightened individuals like you. We all thought it was still a secret. You should watch out, we are everywhere, and you never know what nefarious things we might be doing, even in your own backyard. Run and hide.

          • Sure i called all Conservatives conbots. I do it every day. Singing from the same hymn book as Bean doesn’t make you any smarter, nor your attempt at sarcasm any less lame.

          • Of course it doesn’t make me smarter or lamer. We all think the same. We are identically bad. You can attribute all and any negative characteristics to us. That’s why you call us conbots.
We share all negative characteristics. Identically. By definition, I cannot be any smarter nor lamer.

          • Whatever! If the cap fits, by all means wearit. It’s your choice, not mine.

          • As enlightened individuals such as you have discovered, all conservatives are the same, they are all equally bad. Therefore, by definition, the hat fits, there is no “if”.

          • Aren’t you bored with this yet?

          • As enlightened individuals such as you have discovered, all conservatives are the same, they are all equally bad.
You can attribute all and any negative characteristics to us. That’s why you call us conbots. We don’t care about boredom.

          • Congrats…You’re certainly boring me.

          • I really don’t care if I’m boring you.

          • I don’t care that you don’t care…you’re still boring me though.

          • As enlightened individuals such as you have discovered, all conservatives are the same, they are all equally bad.
You can attribute all and any negative characteristics to us. That’s why you call us conbots. Whether you are bored is irrelevant. What matters is your enlightened understanding of the nefarious motives of all conbots.

          • Are you high maybe?

          • No, I’m a conbot, as enlightened individuals such as you are aware. You can attribute all and any negative characteristics to us.

  3. I am honestly looking forward to what SH is going to do next. He has been a political master of the unexpected at such points.

    • I am anticipating a masterful rendition of “Nowhere Man” or “Can’t Buy me Love” any moment now.

      • Or a Twitter release of new photos of Harper’s Chinchilla.

        • Or showing up to a hockey final with his kids.

          • Walking along a beach, alone, with his pants rolled up and his inexplicably too-long sleeves rolled down.

          • Excerpted release of his hockey tome, just in time for Stanley Cup, with public readings that include his cat Stanley cuddled into his sweater vest.

    • I don’t think it’s complicated or difficult to predict what Harper will do. Continue to govern. Continue to attack Justin Trudeau’s fitness for higher office. I can guarantee you that no-one expected this to be a one month campaign. There is still a ton of material out there to use against Justin…his speaking fees, gun registry nonsense, “root causes”, and so on, and Justin will no doubt provide more fodder for ads over the weeks and months ahead.

If Trudeau is still flying high 6-12 months from now, then the calculus may change.

      • “There is still a ton of material out there to use against Justin…his
speaking fees, gun registry nonsense, “root causes”, and so on, and
Justin will no doubt provide more fodder for ads over the weeks and
        months ahead”

Can we look forward to any of that being presented in a reasonably factual and balanced manner?

      • I think the current situation has as much to do with Harper’s negatives as anything. So while he may be able to pull Trudeau down, I don’t think that solves all his problems.

I also suspect Harper may opt for an excuse for an early election. At some point the question of who handled the keys to the Conservative database is going to have to be addressed. I don’t think Harper wants it to be in a leaders debate.

      • And you think all these nonsense about JT will limit the damage caused by Harper and Canadians will have amnesia when the time comes to render verdict on Harper. Canadians have seen enough of the party of no Accountability, transparency, $3.1b and $50M boondoogles, Robocall fraud, $1b fake lakes, $1m limo to India, TFWs at Canadian expense, EAP on taxpayers dime, divisive politics, cronism, largest debt in Canadian history and the most clueless sets of politicians in Canadian history. Canadians are waiting for Harper to run on his record if he has any.
