‘A woman’s right to choose’

A statement from the New Democrats.

Today, New Democrats led the way as Parliament chose to uphold women’s rights by voting against the Conservative motion to reopen the abortion debate.

Members of the New Democratic caucus voted unanimously for a woman’s right to choose and against the Conservatives’ underhanded attempt to take away that right.

The NDP has always been proud to stand with women across Canada in the fight to achieve equality for all.

‘A woman’s right to choose’

  1. Thank you.

Note to Cons….time to give up this antique nonsense, and get on with the 21st century.

  2. I don’t understand what could be wrong with at least listening to experts on this topic. If the people opposed to motion 312 are so sure of their position, then what do they have to fear?

    • It’s for the same reason no one wants to hear crap about creationism in science class.

      • That’s an interesting study in self-contradiction. On the one hand, science should be given greater weight than religious beliefs. On the other hand, political dogma should overrule basic biology.

Personally, I’ll take science over dogma in both scenarios. The abortion issue is one of ethics, not science.

Rights for the unborn and a mother’s right to choose do not have to be mutually exclusive. I certainly can’t speak to Woodworth’s motives but I do agree with him that geography is a poor way to determine one’s legal rights.

If a preemie has rights, then so should an in utero infant at the same stage of gestational development – always assuming the mother has primacy of rights compared to those of the in utero child where the two conflict.

That is an issue worth resolving. Putting your fingers in your ears and spouting dogma is not a mature approach to this genuine issue.

        • Yawn….that’s nice dear. Now off you go.

          • Dear oh dear.
            Dear oh dear oh dear.
“…..Yawn….that’s nice dear. Now off you go……”

You are indeed a piece of work EmilyOne.
The elderly equivalent to the ‘angsty’ teenager’s stock riposte: “Whatevah”

          • Emily she is right. You are ignorant of the facts.

          • No ‘Rod’ I’m not.

        • Exactly!!! Rona Ambrose is a hero to many Canadians for supporting the pro-life motion.

        • How about that… four votes against biology. Apparently Emily is right and biology and creationism do equate. I guess the next move by Emily and her worshippers is to ban biology from the classroom…

        • Woodworth’s motives are clear – he wants to ban abortion. This search for scientific clarity is a charade.

          • That may be, but it doesn’t make the issue I raised any less valid. Nor does it mean allowing the debate Woodward was proposing would lead to any restrictions on a woman’s right to choose.

There are issues we should be discussing, but the pro-choice side seems terrified of doing so.

PS: I hope you aren’t among the idiots who apparently agree with Emily that biology should be lumped into the same category as creationism :-)

          • Science will not settle this. If science could somehow determine that life begins at conception and you then argue that the fetus has the same rights as the mother, you then have competing rights. So how further ahead are you?
This is a moral and rights issue.

          • OK Jan – either you have not read anything I have written on this issue, or it went clean over your head. It is – purely - a moral and rights issue. That has always been my point.

When pro-choicers like Emily try to deny the science, they just muddy the waters and make the rest of us look bad.

            So, once more, my position:

Both mother and child are living humans, albeit at different stages of their development. In theory, both are entitled to rights. But in society, we have certain rights which kick in based on age – e.g the right to vote. So the mother’s right’s versus the unborn’s rights will be different.

The mother is clearly proven to be a viable human. That is not necessarily true for the unborn. Further, the mother should have the right to choose what happens with her body. Forcing her to carry the child to term against her will would arguably be a form of torture – certainly mental and possibly physical.

However, once the decision to keep the child has been made, the child should have legal protections against negligent or deliberate harm.

i.e. there is a Primacy of Rights – the mother’s trumps the unborn’s, but the unborn otherwise has a certain level of legal rights and protections – certainly by the third trimester, so it has the same rights as a preemie, though I would not have a problem granting those rights at an earlier stage.

So there you have it. the pro-life camp won’t like it; hardcore, head-in-the-sand pro-choicers won’t like it. But nearly every person who is not pro-life whom I have ever discussed this with face to face I have won over.

  3. And the Cons Minister for Women voted for it – bad optics guys.

  4. The NDP and the MPS that voted against the bill are ignorant then as to the real facts about the harm abortion does in our society. People should see the exposed cracks in the pro-choice logic by saying that they think the unborn child in the womb is not “human” , or “my body- my choice”. Looking past the fact that a unborn child has his/her own beating heart and bodily systems after 15 weeks the living human fetus has a distinct genetic code that is different than that of the mother, and can continue to develop into a grown human adult. It is two bodies. Privately run for-profit abortion clinics in Canada and the U.S. have been teaching the population to harm women and destroy their own children while calling it “pro-choice” and claiming that it advances the rights of women.

    • It doesn’t matter if it has a beating heart. There is no difference between the killing of a 15 week old fetus or a single cell. The baby has not grown to even be aware of its own existence, and its death is a painless, unaffected procedure.

If you are against the killing of fetuses, then you might as well be against the killing of any animal for our poultry needs, as the stage in which animals are killed are far beyond the stage that fetuses are aborted.

  5. It was a sad day for justice in Canada when political parties [The New Democrats] say they…” led the way as Parliament chose to uphold women’s rights by voting against the Conservative motion to reopen the abortion debate.” I want to apologize to our children and the women who are deceived by the pro-choice lobby that members of parliament in Canada do not even have the fortitude to stand up for these innocent children that should be protected in a mother’s womb. To those members of parliament who prevented this bill from passing, I say this is pure ignorance. People should be outraged at the human rights crimes taking place in Canada. Hope rests with the international community and Canadians themselves to speak up now or risk this problem becomes bigger. What is the reasoning for the absence of legal checks and balances on something as precious as human life and the future children of our country?? In 2012, surgical abortions are being performed at 20 weeks in Western Canada for $1200 bucks at privately run abortion clinics, while we know that babies born at 21 weeks have survived. People should see the exposed cracks in the pro-choice logic by saying that they think the unborn child in the womb is not “human” , or “my body- my choice”. Looking past the fact that a unborn fetus at that stage has his/her own beating heart and bodily systems, the living unborn human child has a distinct genetic code that is different than that of the mother, and develops into a grown human adult. It is two bodies. In Canada, it is still legal to terminate the life of a baby in the womb at any point during pregnancy for any reason or no reason. Privately run for-profit abortion clinics in the U.S. and Canada have been teaching the population to harm women and destroy their own children while calling it “pro-choice” and claiming that it advances the rights of women. Wake up people. Our health care system has failed miserably, and our politicians are not doing their job. These women deserve better. Children are not the enemy. Canadians need to support politicians like Rona Ambrose. We need to uphold the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in this land for all persons (born and still in the womb) to the right to life, liberty and security of the person.

    • Take it up with the Conservatives, they could have passed it it they had wanted to.
