QP Live: Kijiji and Soloviov test Kenney’s resolve

Your daily dose of political theatre

A website called Kijiji and a guy named Anton Soloviov are making things difficult for Employment Minister Jason Kenney. The feds have removed Kijiji classifieds from their national job vacancy calculations, an adjustment that produces a much less dramatic picture of Canada’s apparent skills shortage. Soloviov is the latest human face on a fraught temporary foreign workers program. The 25-year-old former mall kiosk employee, hired from abroad, claims he wasn’t paid much by his Canadian employer, knows plenty of colleagues in similar situations, and could be the victim of human trafficking.

Kenney’s penchant for rosy statistics, and his tendency to demonize the opposition, will undoubtedly be put to the test this afternoon.
