Donald Trump on the future of the Afghanistan war: Video

Watch the president’s first major primetime address on national security live at 9 p.m.

In what was billed as his first major primetime address on national-security policy, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke to the American people about his plan for American engagement in Afghanistan. He made the speech from Fort Myer, Va., across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.

A Fox News poll earlier this year found a surge in troops to be unpopular among the electorate—except for respondents in Trump’s voter base. As The Atlantic reminded its readers, Trump staunchly opposed war in Afghanistan only a few years ago, a position documented—where else?—in a tweet.

Watch a replay of the president’s speech.

  1. No nation building, well i guess that leaves Canada out, good, Canada does not do scorched earth policy(hope not). The US has gone out of the conquering nation business, back to bombing and destabilizing of other countries in the mid east, east, leaving border countries surrounding them, to pick up the mess again.

    • The Taliban needed something to increase their recruiting of new soldiers, Trump just gave them a boost.
