White House threatens to veto Keystone XL pipeline bill

White House press secretary says he does not expect Obama would sign any Keystone legislation that reaches his desk

WASHINGTON – The White House says President Barack Obama would veto legislation approving construction of the long-stalled Keystone XL oil pipeline.

A bill that would have forced Obama’s hand on the issue failed to clear Congress in its final days last year.

But the Congress that convened Tuesday is Republican-controlled and new Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the pipeline bill will be among the first issues voted on.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest says he does not expect Obama would sign any Keystone legislation that reaches his desk.

The spokesman says there is a “well-established” review process that is being run by the State Department that should not be undermined by legislation.

Earnest also says the pipeline’s route through Nebraska also must be resolved.

Calgary-based TransCanada has been waiting more than six years for approval of the Keystone project, which would carry oilsands bitumen from Alberta to refineries in Texas.

  1. would not want the makers of law inferring with bureaucrats….

  2. If this is a surprise to anyone….

  3. The Keystone XL approval bill, authored by a Republican and a Democrat only needs four more votes to be veto proof.

I can hardly wait to see Obama’s tears when he is kicked in the balls by members of his own party.

    • You’ll be waiting a long time. Obama has the ultimate override on it.

  4. The White House, Democrats and Republicans need to read the final report on the July 2009 TransCanada Peace River pipeline explosion which coincidentally was not published until AFTER (Feb 2014) the US had ruled for Keystone.
-the ruptured pipeline was 95% corroded….does that sound like the company diligently monitored and maintained the pipeline?
-TC took HOURS to stop the flow….Keystones flow rate will be 555brls/min
-TC will NOT have to contribute to the US clean up fund
All concerned should have accurate data in order to make the best decision for the farmers affected, the Ogallalla aquifer protection and the rest of US citizens.
