A growing ‘NoFap’ movement of young men are saying no to porn and masturbation

Daniel Ehrenworth

Earlier this year, Armando, a 23-year-old technician from Oklahoma (who didn’t want to give his last name), was browsing the online news and discussion board Reddit when he clicked a button called “random.” It took him to a forum filled with guys his age discussing what guys his age tend to discuss on the Internet: porn. Only, this forum wasn’t dedicated to sourcing the most explicit sites, but to how people could wean themselves off porn forever. Participants were asked to challenge themselves by giving up porn and masturbation for at least a week. Those who had done so claimed it gave them more energy and confidence and boosted their self-esteem, something they dubbed “superpowers.”

For Armando, who had recently broken up with his girlfriend, it sounded worth a try. His first attempt to give up what he considered a casual daily habit of surfing the web for porn lasted three days. So did his second and third. By his fourth attempt, Armando says he had come to the realization that what had once seemed like a perfectly normal pastime might not be so healthy after all. He’s been porn-free for two months. He has also remained “master of his own domain,” in Seinfeld parlance (after the episode where Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer have a contest over who can refrain from masturbation the longest). He reads more and works out twice as hard at the gym. One day, after he’d read a book, exercised and taken two cold showers, he dug out the violin he hadn’t played since high school.

He’s now aiming to quit porn forever, convinced that his porn habit was responsible for the failure of his past two relationships. “It really messes up your mind for what sex is actually supposed to be,” he says. “It sets the hopes too high for normal men and women to be able to perform at that level. I believe that’s causing a lot of relationship problems among my peers.” He’s also gained enough confidence in his willpower to take on a new challenge: to stop smoking.

Armando is part of “NoFap,” a growing online movement among young men who pledge to give up both guilty pleasures for a period of time in hopes of improving their lives. (“Fapping” is Internet slang for masturbation.) When it started two years ago, it was a lighthearted experiment to test whether giving up porn for a week could make you more productive. Today, NoFap has grown to more than 80,000 members, many of whom pledge to swear off porn entirely, saying it contributed to low self-esteem, problems with women and lack of career ambition. Recent forum discussions include a debate on the effectiveness of male chastity belts (yes, they exist) and the best software to block Internet porn pop-ups. One post from a college freshman says giving up porn suddenly made him want to cuddle with a girl. “I just want to lie in bed, fully clothed?.?.?.?holding hands and being really close,” he writes.

“I’ve started to view myself the same way I view a heroin addict nodding off right after getting high,” writes another about his attempt to give up his nighttime solo activity. A professional guitar player announced that his month-long abstention from porn gave him the courage to get over his ex-girlfriend and focus on his music. “Every walk through a public place feels like I’m 14 years old again, searching for beauty, but not in an objectified way,” he writes. “My mind is more free for things that give me joy.”

Despite the evangelical tone, NoFap is fundamentally different from traditional campaigns that view masturbation as an assault on religious values. Instead, it is developing as a secular movement popular among young men, many of whom identify as liberal and atheist. The majority of NoFap members are men in their teens and early 20s, though there are women, too, says Alexander Rhodes, the 23-year-old web developer from Pittsburgh who founded the movement two years ago. He estimates about 60 per cent are atheists; the site is also home to a fair number of Christians and some Muslims, all in broad agreement that porn is harmful.

A significant number are teenaged virgins worried that their porn habits will ruin their future chances with women. They’re tapping into a broader cultural moment. A similar idea inspired Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon, where he plays a swaggering womanizer whose budding romance with Scarlett Johansson is nearly destroyed by his addiction to Internet porn.

While many adherents are ardently opposed to porn, they also tend to be vehemently against any form of online censorship. Rhodes describes himself as “an Internet-freedom zealot” who thinks the dangerous effects of porn are best dealt with in sex-ed class and not through government regulation. His views are broadly echoed by others on NoFap who say porn between consenting adults is both deeply harmful and an inviolable act of free speech.

“It’s made me realize that even Playboy, even Miley Cyrus doing her thing, isn’t healthy for anybody,” says James, a graphic designer from southern California, on Day 37 of his NoFap challenge. “But absolutely, I would defend it. She has every right to do that and Hugh Hefner has every right to do what he does.” Now 40, James (not his real name) was raised by parents who taught him masturbation was healthy and viewing pornography was a valid form of sexual expression.

But that was in the days when porn for teens meant sneaking off to see what was on late-night television. The advent of high-speed Internet changed the game, he says, allowing anyone with a computer to access an endless array of extreme content that he found both deeply destructive and difficult to resist.

Since swearing off porn, James says he’s noticed small but significant changes in his life. He realized his Internet habits had been feeding his social anxiety by allowing him to substitute online fantasies for conversations with real women. Shortly after joining NoFap, he found himself doing what he had previously considered unthinkable: sharing a casual joke with a female cashier at the grocery store. Recently, he fell into conversation with an attractive young woman in line. “Before, I would have probably just stood there stonily and wanted to talk to her but resented her for being hot,” he says. “Instead, she smiled at me, I smiled at her and we had a really nice conversation and ended up walking down the street for several blocks together. That never would have happened 37 days ago.”

Like others, James found his way to NoFap through an online video of a 2011 TED Talk by psychologist Philip Zombardo, leader of the 1971 Stanford prison experiment. (One of the most famous studies of the psychology of evil, the experiment divided 21 students into guards and prisoners in a simulated prison.) In his TED talk, Zombardo blames declining marriage rates and rising rates of school dropout among boys on the widespread effects of Internet porn. “Boys’ brains are being digitally rewired in a totally new way for change, novelty, excitement and constant arousal” that makes it difficult for them to commit to anything or anyone, he says.

That talk was followed by an independent TEDx Talk video last year by Gary Wilson, a past adjunct professor in anatomy at an Oregon university. In it, he claims porn is deeply addictive because it causes the brain to become desensitized to dopamine. The video has been viewed more than 1.3 million times and Wilson’s website, YourBrainonPorn.com, which he runs with his wife, a former Campbell Soup executive, has been the source for much of the scientific theorizing about porn addiction that gets passed around the NoFap community.

But the kind of definitive research that could explain what happens to the brain while watching porn simply hasn’t been done, says Dr. Richard Krueger, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University’s college of physicians and surgeons. Kruger helped revise the sexual disorders section of the latest edition of the psychiatric bible, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which doesn’t include sex or porn addiction due to lack of academic evidence that they exist. “The whole notion of what goes on in someone’s brain when they’re sexually excited is just starting to be evaluated,” he says.

He has little doubt porn addiction is real and will eventually garner enough attention to be recognized as a mental illness. But he’s skeptical it has the kind of universal neurological effects that some suggest. Other behaviours such as drinking alcohol or gambling are addictive to only a small minority of the people who engage in them—between one and 10 per cent, Krueger says. “I would argue for the same sort of hit rate with exposure to Internet pornography, that most people would do it and it won’t become a problem.”

Meanwhile, Rhodes is pushing ahead with his plans for NoFap. The movement now has a dedicated website and he’s working on an education and awareness campaign to reduce incidence of sexual assault. Though NoFap began as an experiment in productivity, it has morphed into a movement with a loftier goal. “My No. 1 goal in life isn’t to improve people’s sex lives,” Rhodes says. “I want society to value sex as something meaningful.”

For some, it’s already working. Midway through his NoFap challenge, Armando says he began noticing changes in the way he looks at women. “Before, whenever I’d see a woman, the first thing I would look for is what have they got hanging on back there, or how big are their breasts,” he says. “Lately, I’ve been catching myself looking at their eyes.”

Will quitting porn improve your life?

  1. Listen, “porn”, or otherwise watching others have sex, has been around for thousands of years. It was going on back in the days of the Roman Empire. Other than making it easier to get your hands on, the Internet has done nothing to change something that’s been around forever. Scientific evidence has shown that, in moderation, sex (including masturbation) is actually healthy. As far as I am concerned, these “NoFap” people are completely out to lunch.

    • But we live in the age of extremes and propaganda. But I agree with you, porn is like salt. Too much or too little sex isn’t good for you.

You can even occasionally see horses with sex thoughts in the middle of a field on occasion.

Denial can however make people warped, frustrated and mean. Moderation is better than absolution.

      • All forms of gluttony were “going on back in the days of the Roman Empire.” Vomitoriums anyone? Was it “normal”? “Healthy”?

        • By ”gluttony” do you mean the Christians or the Republicans? Its truly something quite impressive seeing how porn has taken sex out of the ghetto where certain creepy segments of the population– the christian right, copyright or aids- had fought it back into and how it coexists, for now, on a neutral internet, in an inflationary spiral of pleasure, with the surreal corrupt and thuggish american politics and its corporations.. Is it true in USSA you fine women who bare their breasts on the beach?

    • You must be very young If you think watching Internet porn is like looking at porn was in the past.

    • The fact it’s been around for a long time proves nothing. Alcohol and drugs have been around for a long time too. Sure moderation never harms, but we’re talking about extremes – porn is currently no 1 activity on the web. The latest Cambridge University study conducted fmri scans proving porn is highly addictive, there are over 50 other studies from equally reputable sources proving the porn is not so “healthy” as tabloids and pop-science like to promote.

Of course even monkeys do it as popular argument goes – the fact is the “beta” males watch the “alpha” male having sex and passing his genes on while they masturbate without having their genes passed on. The fact that losers lose in evolutionary game is part of how nature works, that’s the only “natural” part about it. Wanking anonymously at home, watching other people have sex may be OK and around for a while, but it doesn’t mean I can not chose to do better things – like going out and meeting real women without silicone implants or spending my energy on e.g working on my goals and ambitions.

      • FMRI scan papers and research is still at infancy. Most authorities on this dont accept this hypothesis. Porn is technology – the application of science to provide some desired result. And porn will only improve in time. The argument that primary purpose of sex is for procreation and passing on genes goes against what evolutionary research has thought us about sexuality. Technology/science is further posed solve those issues that some males may have about passing on their genes. I can see a future where we completely do away with pregnancy and the associated components (including artificial uterus’s etc). You are propagating the myth of our western norm that men must commit and be a slave to one woman. Men are refusing to do this today not because of porn but because of unreasonable our society has become toward men and their rights and freedoms. And many men are getting to realize that its simply not worth the risks. Dont think I am a misogynists, because i love women – i just will never become a slave to one. I bet that we are on the verge of a radical change about this.

        • QUOTE: FMRI scan papers and research is still at infancy.

Baloney. Addiction neuroscience is years beyond the study of other brain-based conditions. Why is that?

Addiction mechanisms have been studied in animals since the mid 1950′s. There are thousands of studies identifying the mechanisms and brain changes – all the way down to epigenetic changes that causes the behaviors associated with addictions.

There have been hundreds of fMRI, PET scans, MRI, and EEG studies done on addiction mechanisms over the last 25 years. These studies align with thousands of animal studies creating a huge data base.

So citing articles about fMRI’s on anything other than addiction, is of no value. Addition neuroscience is in its own class. As stated all studies points to deltafosb as causing the major brain cahnges seen in both behavioral and drug addictions. The transcription factor activates a specific set of genes that in turns cause the two major brain changes that lead to addiction: sensitization and desensitization. Block DeltafosB prevents addiction, and using gene therapy to overproduce DeltaFosB is sufficient to cause addiction.

QUOTE: Most authorities on this dont accept this hypothesis.

          False.

The DSM5 has a new category called behavioral addiction – this us legitimizing all behavioral addictions. the The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) released their sweeping new definition of addiction, which stated that sexual behavior
          addictions exits.

ASAM contains many of the top addiction researchers in the US, including the head of NIDA, Nora Volkow. In the three documents by ASAM covering their new definition of addiction. Sexual behavior addictions were mentioned 11 times – more than all other addictions combined.

They also stated that addiction is one condition – and that all addictions share the same fundamental mechanisms and brain changes that lead to the addiction phenotype

          • “Addiction neuroscience is way ahead of all other brain-based conditions.”

Because most brain based conditions is based on garbage psychiatry DSM type pseudo science. Is that your standard? – which is why you quote DSM – really – the same guys that brought you drepatomania and stated that homosexuality was a disorder? And, They did NOT accept Sexual Addiction (in DSM5) and they are still OFF on almost everything based on sexuality. Go and talk to Robert Spitzer and Allen Frances (DSM 3 and 4 chairs). The entire mental health ‘profession’ is polluted with money making scams. Addiction ‘science’ is no exception. As for ASAM – they are just a trade group to support those in the trade of milking the public in that area. All of your references are not solid enough for established theories. There is just too much on this to type in this response

          • Lots of unsupported statements. No science, just spin.

As stated ASAM is home to the top researchers in the world – the ones that actually provide the addiction neuroscience. Not a trade organization.

What I don’t see in any of your spin is refutation of the science as described: You cannot. All addictions, both behavioral and drugs involve the same fundamental mechanisms and brain changes leading to a shared state of sign symptoms a behaviors. These brain changes involve the accumulation DetafosB over time, which acts on the medium spiny neurons of the reward center. This causes changes in GLUT2 receptors and dynorphin leading to sensitization to ones addiction.

DeltafosB then acts on Dopamine D2 receptors causing desensitization through down regulation of D2 receptors in the striatum

Both of these cellular changes can be seen in in brain scan technology. These brain changes have been identified in gambling addiction, food addiction, internet addiction and in Internet porn addiction. This why ASAM and the DSM agree that behavior addictions exits.

Try citing addiction neuroscience rather than an unsupported opinion

          • This is not the place to have such a discussion. Dont have the time nor the patience to have such a discussion here. There is a lot one can quote from journals, but both sides can do that – that’s not the point. What is clear is that your post(s) have gotten personal and thats not a hallmark of a scientist. Go back to your trade milking money from the dumb with your 10 step or what ever.

Couldn’t help laugh at the statement ” ASAM is home to the top researchers in the world” – yeah where those the guys who discovered the Higgs Boson – yeah you must be right.

          • wgone, your response failed to address jordanyutes at all. Furthermore, you have committed several logical non sequiturs including ad hominem arguments, which demonstrates your lack of knowledge. I anticipated a stimulating response from you and was disappointed.

          • A time a place for everything. And its obvious that Jordan*** has a particular interest in the despensing of this type of therapy as is people like the Yourbrainonporn and 10 step people. Like much of psychotherapy – its part of whats wrong with psychiatry and even from a bigger perspective – it is stifling the public health system in the US. I had enough. She wants me to quote references – whats the point of that – go and do your own research. ANyone can quote their favorite confirmation bias study.

          • Wgone, I respect your choice to watch porn. I don’t care about that. But I do wonder if you are feeling alright. A divorce can really break a man emotionally but don’t give up hope. Don’t close your heart. You will find a faithful and enjoyable love sooner than you think.

          • I suggest you educate yourself about the changing attitudes in our socieity especially the impact of technology – here is a good lecture for you to start with – youtube.com/watch?v=rlvMAS_20K4
FYI – I am not divorced, but due to my work (which i cannot disclose) i am exposed to a lot divorced people.

          • Have you ever been in a long-term romantic relationship?

          • If you are looking for romance, i would suggest you visit okcupid or match.com.

          • But the question was asked to you. Have you been in a long-term romantic relationship before?

          • In case you dont get it – its not wise to get involved in personal discussions in these public forums – this is why i suggested that you go to one of the appropriate sites if you want to get personal with strangers – you can sign up – i think its free.

          • lol Frankly, it is not wise to get involved in these public forums at all! “I’ll come to bed in a minute, honey. Someone on the internet is WRONG.”

I hope I’m not coming across as someone who is trying to make you feel bad. It is not my intention. Watching porn/erotica is a personal choice and people should respect that. (I am Uglymontrealschedline as well–I tried posting as origen01 but I was unable to log in for a time)

I bring up the relationship question because you keep saying that it is not worth it to get involved in a long-term romantic relationship. I originally thought you were a man who has gone through a bitter divorce. Since you say that you haven’t gone through a divorce, I wonder what made you come to such a conclusion about relationships with women “not being worth it”.

I’ll be up front with you. I vehemently disagree. A long-term romantic relationship can be really satisfying and wonderful. Loving a mate and being loved is quite wonderful.

Loving long-term relationships and erotica aren’t mutually exclusive but I personally think porn is corrosive. First off, there are some ethical concerns with the pornographic industry regarding STDs, injury on set, misogyny, and prostitution. Second, there is a compulsive element to the activity. Even some of the best adult performers do not watch pornography. Married couple Mark Wood and Francesca Le are big directors/performers for Evil Angel and Francesca loves the fact that Mark does not consume porn in his personal life. He is a real family man and he loves his wife very much. Manuel Ferrara is greatest male performer of all time and he doesn’t watch porn or masturbate compulsively. Rocco Siffredi also thinks watching porn is boring and he hasn’t been watching it regularly for the last 20 years.

Watching porn is a personal choice but don’t slam no-fappers as being some sort of sexual prudes. They give it up to prove that they truly love their mates (or their future mate) and are not simply lust driven (though a little bit of lust can be the spice of life). I’m not saying that watching porn precludes one from being a faithful lover but giving up an activity one REALLY enjoys in the name of love is a commendable act.

People reap what they sow. If one sows a habit in the name of love, one will experience more love.

          • I think you have some problems if you cannot get to bed because ” Someone on the internet is WRONG.”. I Never said “long term relationship” thats the straw-man argument you are making. I said “monogamy” and “comitted” which is different from longterm. Long term is still open ended. Personally you sound like you’d make a good spokes person for the feminist movement. I don’t care for your judgmental attitude on any industry – there are industries and professions/behaviors far more dangerous and risky, yet people single out the porn industry. Liberty and Freedom of choice and protection of the rights of others are very high my moral compass. Adults making informed choices are their business. Governments have a right to ensure that employers dont trample on the rights their employees. I have no reason to think that this is not so – other than the opinions of a few agenda driven nut jobs some of whom have written books and even have PhD’s. It does not help when some dehumanize the honest work of others.

Men today are the most trampled group in our society but because they have the brawn to take it no one stands up for them. Marriage is one of the institutions that does this, not because of the women themselves, but because of the laws and social attitudes, if you dont get that and you have happy that’s fine. Live your life as you please. My reason is that most young men are told the wrong things about marriage – they think its an even handed process from start to finish. Its not so in most western cultures. If you choose to ignore this and live in the bliss of your ignorance – fine, but men need to be aware of the “risks” many men face when they don’t comply with women’s wishes that they once loved and the relationship breaks up. And the law and society will not be on their side. I am sure that most men know your side of the equation – the side i vocalized is not very well understood. Your attempt to quiet this reality is disconcerting and unfortunate. This is a dead conversation and i wont be responding anymore.

          • Um, excuse me. I believe this conversation is very much still alive.

I simply do not understand how you can make so many blanket statements about marriage and not have been married. What is the basis for your accusations? I only ask this because I think you are wrong.

“My reason is that most young men are told the wrong things about marriage – they think its an even handed process from start to finish. Its not so in most western cultures.”

Like this. What is the basis for this comment? Statistics? Experience? If you are going by what you have seen anecdotally, you do realize that the plural of anecdotes is not data, right?

For every bad marriage you have seen, I have seen several blissful ones.

Married couples tend to be happier than single individuals in numerous social studies undertaken around the world. Married people are healthier and live longer. Married people are more likely to be financial successful. Married men have more sex. Married couples have longer relationships than cohabitating couples. The children of married couples have better life outcomes than the children of single or divorced parents.

I am not a feminist in terms of ideology. I think a feminist viewpoint is very useful when applying critical analysis to a social dynamics. I think feminism is too broad to be defined as an ideological viewpoint.

Personally, I like listening to both Nina Hartley and the late Andrea Dworkin. Both have their good points. There areas in the porn industry that are SCUMMY and abusive. In fact, most of the industry is scummy and abusive. I’ve watched a lot of porn and have been a close follower of the porn industry for years but the truth is that it is an Industry in rapid decline. The BBC’s Louis Theroux did a good documentary on the porn industry called “Twilight of the Porn Stars”. I think the documentary (a sequel to an original done ten years earlier) is the most accurate representation of how the porn industry works. The documentary was done a couple of years ago and things are even worse now. The Industry is not profitable. Scene rates are so low and work is so rare that most of the female performers have to escort in order to sustain themselves.

The multi-billion dollar revenue statistic for the Industry that was cited by Forbes years ago never had any financial legitimacy. Even if it did, the current financial state is disastrous. NOBODY is making money. Well, I mean, some people (like Vivid, Jules Jordan, and Evil Angel) are making SOME money but only barely. Hustler Video might be folding soon. Manwin and Digital Playground are crashing down. Porn parodies were making money for a while but that has dried up. Adam & Eve is only making money by selling toys. Porn is trying to appeal to a female audience because they actually pay for porn and are the fastest growing viewer demographic but it wouldn’t be enough added revenue to bring companies into the black. Individual camming isn’t even that profitable anymore. I don’t know if there would be an AVN Awards show next year or the year after.

(BTW: Women seem to be the number one target demographic for almost every product because, unlike men, they actually take life seriously, try to succeed, and care about themselves and others. I say this not because I am a self-hating man but because it is the truth. We are doing bad in almost every social metric relating to success in life.)

Despite the financial problems, there is a bigger and related issue: the Industry is not safe. The incidence of STDs among performers, whether caught on set (as is most likely) or not, is quite high with a recent UCLA study putting it around 1 in 5 performers. You might think that is comparable to the average (civilian) population but you have to remember that these are “professionals” having sex for living. They are having frequent and riskier sex with many different partners. The incidence rate needs to be lower in order to take into account the possibility of re-infection.

Things are really dirty now. Any sense of community is GONE. Central testing at the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation (AIM) is a thing of the past. For the past two years, big name performers have been involved prominent STD outbreaks. Nasty STDs too. Mr Marcus, a distinctive veteran, was involved in a widespread syphilis outbreak in 2012. Syphilis! I had never even heard of performers contracting that disease before then. There was also a high profile HIV outbreak about five months ago and one again in December that included industry veteran TJ Cummings (a great performer–I’m sorry for his and everyone else’s situation). Alex Gonz, another Industry veteran, was caught forging his test results to conceal his hepatitis C condition–and he’s probably not the only one to do this. Keep in mind that no one is testing for herpes and HPV (which many performers have) and that the STDs are contracted over and over again by performers. The re-infection takes a toll on the human body! There are even concerns about antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea breaking out in the Industry. The safety issue is the NUMBER ONE crisis in the pornographic industry.

Cal-OSHA has been on the California porn industry’s back for many years stating that producers need to use condoms. Measure-B was put in effect in LA County to double-down on that. Now an administrative judge has finally ruled that porn performers are employees for the purpose of workplace protection and producers must require condom usage on set in accordance with Cal-OSHA regulations.

The Industry seems convinced that condom porn simply doesn’t sell so they continue to produce bareback films under the radar only to be slammed with hefty fines when their content is tagged as a violation of state law. This only exacerbates their financial woes.

I went into all of this to demonstrate your absolute ignorance when you talk about “my judgmental attitude” regarding the pornographic industry. I don’t mean to be rude but I will be blunt: you know nothing. I have wanted the porn industry to be safe and professional for a long time but that distinction is only reserved for a dwindling minority.

As for your men’s rights rhetoric, two books: Susan Faludi’s “Stiffed” and Hanna Rosin’s “The End of Men and the Rise of Women”.

          • There’s no industry in internet porn– it’s all copies of copies of copies, so it’s an inflationary take on sexuality. An ‘industry’ can only exist when the product takes a deflationary spiral so its rarity can be capitalized upon, speculated, produced consumed, and ghettoed. Internet porn loses the ghetto and becomes kitchen sink amateur porn, it becomes less repressed and more of a sport because the gender difference is smaller in a way not unlike the difference between amish dress codes and urban jean wearers. Where are the Rocco Siffredis and big plastic tits so characteristic of the porn industry in the endless procession of attention seeking sex videos and reddit boobs, nowhere.

What about ‘Against Love: A Polemic’, you read that one?

          • You’re so out of touch it’s mesmerising. Did you read ‘Against Love: A Polemic’? The remarkable thing about it is it was written way before the arrival of xhamster.

          • Lol! In fact I’m looking at a copy of Kipnis’ book right next to my laptop!

Kipnis is a witty writer but the book is in no way “serious”. Besides, Kipnis loses credibility with me because she has never been married. If that kind of lifestyle works for her, great, but it kinda of disturbs me that she would bash something so vehemently without giving it a legitimate go.

Besides, I detect some yearning for monogamy with the final paragraph of the book encapsulated with this sentence:

“Maybe no one can be against love, but it’s still possible to flirt with the idea.”

Like I said, I’ve watched a lot of porn over the years. A lot. In the face of having a beautiful and loving partner (something I never even dreamed of before) my years with porn is not sometihing I’m personally proud of. Before, I never thought women (or anyone else for that matter) were trustworthy enough to be monogamous and be completely faithful with. I thought that everyone was a cheater or a sex hound. That is not the case and life is not completely about sex. Some people might genuinely like being alone or with many different partners with no commitments. That’s great. I just think people should give a long-term monogamous relationship a try before they bash it. (And don’t be like Michael Fassbender in “Shame” and think that a real try at a long-term monogamous relationship constitutes only four months.) Not everyone has to try but, for me, “love” (monogamous love, à la Kipnis) has been a really rewarding experience.

Watching erotica is a personal choice but it is my experience that life is much more satisfying without it and with a long-term monogamous partner. You can watch erotica in a relationship and that too is a personal choice couples make. I would only bring up the added concerns about the ethics of the pornographic industry coupled with the research related to the activity’s compulsive psychological effects.

          • I’ve never actually read Kipnis, but it was often quoted when the avalanche of mainstream (non-)life was plaguing the pre-internet-Demonoid-Xhamster-Karagarga years, those years when Lisa Simpson was a rebel and sports and olympics didn’t get subjected to memes.

When does ‘life’ manifest itself in such plenitude that it exceeds stories? I say never. We can all point to ghettoed porn where pointing to the likes of Rocco Siffredi or Ron Jeremy allows for a masturbation of our own sophistry, not to mention ‘Shame’ with its upteenth take on sex that’s really damage that we get from religious circles, but I burn it down to how incredibly boring life is when compared to art. I compare the 99% of the people on this planet and the jobs they have with Brigitte Lahaie movies, and have concluded that the reason why I’ve never actually caught anyone shagging in public, in part, is because of how life doesn’t hold a candle to the greatness of art, as the latter is lived far more intensely. Next time you go to a beach and it’s full of far sweaty aging tourists, think of Dans la chaleur de St Tropez…

I do remember, with befuddled amusement the claim to reason of the 90s. When people went to the cinema back then, they made a big case of attempting to speak in the movies, before the movies, after the movies, as if to constantly keep reminding themselves they were better than stories. How can I compare that time when I had no access to stories whatsoever compared to this amazing period we live in today?

          • For years I paraded ponorgraphy as “art” on internet gossip blogs. You know what pornographers did? They laughed in my face and told me to GTFO.

All content does not equal art-no matter how much we are fascinated by it. I really think “Dirty Anal Kelly in Rome” is a pornographic masterpiece–but my opinion of it doesn’t unequivocaly make it art. Neither do I think the no-fappers are refering to eshewing erotic films from the classic age (like “Emmanuelle”) or softcore erotic films today.

BTW: Porn is very much a semblance of real sexual encounters, because, you know, there’s ACTUAL sex going in the production. Choreographed and stylized but real sex nonetheless. I won’t get into the ethics of whether or not sexual encounters should be commercialized because we’ll be here until the end of days…

          • This is absolutely ridiculous, the site bot keeps moderating or eating up my response

I think there was a huge shift in sex in about 2005 when video streaming started being copied endlessly and to this day copyright has hard it very hard to shut these sites down– not even in Germany where copyright has very strict laws set in place.

In my eyes, Dirty An @l Kelly in Rome would still belong in ghettoed p0rn, and many classical gender differences that show up when sex is an issue in capitalism, are portrayed in the clip I just googled. However if sex is subjected to an inflationary economy, it stops being such a big deal– billions of sex videos now uploaded, whereas in a deflationary economy only the village prostitute shows her tits, while most women take a Silas Marneresque goldbug sort of take on sex. The certain type of person that used to have a lot of power no longer has as much– the non-western or conservative family that marries their kids off, the conservative churchgoer, the working class unit hoping to breed further working class families, the sex-as-reproductive agency that always strives to absorb counter-ideologies and rebrand them.

          • I think there was a huge shift in sex in ab@ut 2005 when video streaming started being copied endlessly and to this day copyright has hard it very hard to shut these sites down– not even in Germany where copyright has very strict laws set in place.

In my eyes, Dir ty An @l K elly in Rome would still belong in ghettoed p 0rn, and many classical gender differences that show up when s ex is an issue in capitalism, are portrayed in the clip I just googled. However if sex is subjected to an inflationary economy, it stops being such a big deal– billions of s ex videos now uploaded, whereas in a deflationary economy only the village pros titute shows her t its, while most women take a Silas Marneresque goldbug sort of take on s ex. The certain type of person that used to have a lot of power no longer has as much– the non-western or conservative family that marries their kids off, the conservative churchgoer, the working class unit hoping to breed further working class families, the s ex-as-reproductive agency that always strives to absorb counter-ideologies and rebrand them.

Everyone would probably f@ ck ing in the streets if two things had been solved, venereal diseases and free contraception. The persistence of certain social mores, unhappy with internet porn, is as a result of matter not having solved those two issues. This persistence is not a spontaneous manifestation, but rather one that is bred from within the superstructures. So as such, ”real” s ex returns to a deflationary economy where everyone has to keep making sure the wrong c @cks don’t end up in v @ginas, so obviously that leads to a r@pe culture, because of the supply and demand issue, where the Farrows are part of the culture wars, where America’s Dad, Bill Cosby drugs dozens of women to r@pe them. And the irony is, this deflationary economy of matter has to put up with the inflationary modern rhizome of s ex being shown in the virtual world, with which it can’t compete.

Something pretty drastic or repressive- or economic- has to happen for someone to become a p @rnographer instead of, say, an Eric Rohmer. P@rnographers only come up when there is an imbalance of the supply and demand. My understanding of porn is as an inflationary economy in s ex, not as an archetypal biological gender difference where only men fap, and so I take it as a whole, not just as an industry where big plastic b@@bs would be the norm. As a whole, therefore, I consider online porn as it is today in a neutral internet that can’t be capped, as a virtual neverending asset just like I’d consider ‘real’ sex as a neverending asset if it ever came up, and so I do think of it as the typical comparison we make between dreams/stories/aesthetics and our everyday humdrum reality. The supply and demand equals in inflationary online porn and it’s no longer repressed men, you actually know the women can no longer regard their s ex as capital and the floodgates open, and we find what was only a suspicion to some, that women actually want s ex more than men. This is at the root of the complaint in the doublespeak of ”men no longer having sex with real women”. But it’s not online porn that’s to blame for bad aesthetics, it’s the real that is to blame.

There is a lot of room for suspicion that stories are indeed superior to the physical world where Dylan Moran says, we have ”after the weekdays are done, we have amazing weekends where we’re sh itfaced and can’t remember a thing” but ”no problem, it was still amazing”, where speaking in the first person is not as great a life as doing so in the third person, and where irony isn’t present and stays on the internet– like it did in Pessoa’s different selfs. A more appropriate evaluation of online p@rn would be to compare it to the industry porn of the 20 or so years that spanned from the 80s to the mid 00s– anything otherwise would be like asking Mike Tyson to do a delicate rendition of a classical piano piece.

It’s time, as usual, to return to Thoreau, and to really question whether we want to be where we’re at, and fap allows this profusely, unlike the world of matter that is tied down to the will of nature. I’m not here defending fap, I’m here defending fap as an inflationary economy.

          • F@ck this bot of this site, here I am trying to celebrate the online virtual world and this bot I think was censuring the word ”s e x”… what a loss of an hour I just went through trying to figure out what was wrong, how ironic when I was being pro virtual world about it all. Anyway I give up, what on earth am I doing making points in these comments when I could be playing a videogame or fapping. Have good life, and enjoy my mid/low/high brow response

          • Cheers man. I would just say that fapping to porn is not healthy but to each his own.

BTW: Do you believe in God?

          • I think it is legitimate to compare the pornographic industry to other industries because it establishes a necessary point of comparision for the issue of workers’ welfare. Other than that, one might agree that pornography is unique. Some might say it is unique in the sense that it is a corrosive vice that has no place in society. Some others might say that sex is too intimate an act to be traded commercially.

You are wrong about piracy being the first cause to bring down porn–and this delves into your economy theory about the industry. Free content started poping up along with the tubesites not primarily because of piracy but because of market-saturation. (You should really watch the Louis Theroux documentary where a director explains the demise of the Industry in 60 seconds.) You see, the participants in the porn industry don’t really operate in terms of supply and demand. Back in the early 2000s, when porn was booming, everyone wanted to be a pornstar and a porn director mostly for the intangible benefits. Content was being pumped out like a water from a firehose with nowhere to go. Even now, that is why people are still producing porn despite the dreary financials. It is an ideological (or sentimental) thing. People do it for the sex–these are mostly the directors and male performers–but most people do it for the fame. It is the reason most female performers are drawn to porn, so they can be validated and famous. Many use that fame to raise their wage rates in other parts of the sex industry (ie stripping and escorting).

Frankly, most porn people are poor. Even though many earn $60,000+ in income a year, they don’t have much to really show for it. Many waste their money. I personally believe this is a testament to fact that pornography is a vice. Many performers are emotionally vulnerable and unstable. I wouldn’t say that most were abused as kids but most have daddy issues and issues with self-esteem and rejection. On top of that, most are sex addicts or engage in hypersexuality compulsively. Nothing wrong with having a lot of sex, but there is more to life than screwing. Only a handful of porn performers end up pursuing an education–which is insanely difficult with classmates harrasing them all the time.

There are some pornstars of distinction: Katja Kassin is currently finishing her undergrad-degree, Nina Hartley was a registered nurse, Lexington Steele was a stock broker, Bridgette B has a graduate degree in International Business, Kacey Villianess is a CPA as is Shy Love (idk if they are still certified), Mika Tan has a degree in Biochemistry, and a lot of the amateur-homemade cougars are professionals in real life–like doctors and lawyers. Many other pornstars are very very intelligent, self-taught, and run their own businesses and websites–like Mariah Milano, Flower Tucci, Lisa Ann…

Even with those people of distinction that’s like 3% of the performer population. Without education or a technical skill-set, other performers would be relying on sex until it is no longer physically feasible. Poverty is almost an inevitable end for these performers–which is quite a confirmation of the teachings of Plato.

Marilyn Chambers was living in a trailer when she died.

Anyway, you have to keep in mind that ALL humans have major character flaws. They don’t have to be part of an industry that messes with their head, messes with their health, and where random people call them degrading things in public when they’re with their family. I’m just saying–if you cluster emotional damage and chaos together, you will get pandemonium.

          • Oh, and BTW, to all you No-Fappers reading this: DON’T GOOGLE THE MOVIE TITLES OR PERFORMER NAMES! STAY STRONG!

          • Wow, oh wow. You really are putting a lot of effort into accusing people of addiction when they don’t belong to your ideology. No wonder neuroscience has such a bad rep and failed at displacing hermeneutics from its throne.

          • Huh? Not accusing anyone of having an addiction. Just saying that behavioral addictions exist, and pointing to decades of hard science to back it up.

          • Fapping is a moral habit. So is reproducing while going to church and to war in Iraq while buying shit off people with shitty jobs while screaming your ass off at your kids to get them to beat other kids at football. Why isn’t being a Republican, a Democrat or an Evangelist classified as an ”addiction”? What makes you so special and addiction-free, then, a no pain no gain theocracy inherited from the puritans?

          • Good job with that post, love how you tried to rebuke the actual content in it.

          • Garbage ideology masquerading as science? Give me a fap-break.

        • A “slave” to one? You apparently have issues with women. Having a indepth, fruitful relationship with a women isn’t slavery. Hmmmm, strange you would instinctively use such a term rather than what I just proposed. And please, don’t dare say porn and regular self-gratification through masturbation doesn’t play are role in movign us towards that “sterile, self-aborded, unnatural” world you described. As my husband says, we are be going degenerates and what you describe isn’t “evolution into better”, but degeneration away from what our bodies naturally need and do. As an aside, I’ve dated and married men who’d prefer (and have shown me and said so) that they’d rather keep their sex and ejaculations to themselves then to share this with a woman (or man). they weren’t proud of this, they just coudln’t dicipline themselves, just like someone said early, they couldn’t stop eating, drinking, etc., like any other excess. And they all had longpracticed pornography into adulthood. So experiments aside, read a few (or numerous) forum about problems with couples, and at the root of the problem is porn and masturbation.

        • Nobody’s talking about making a commitment one woman. Some of these guys are foregoing physical contact with women altogether in favor of porn. There are people in their thirties and forties who have never had sex because they’ve spent decades alone with their own hands. Now, I’m not going to claim the sex I had in my early 20s was the best I’ve ever had, but it certainly had a singular emotional quality to it that made it different from all the sex I’ve had since. Same goes for the sex I’ve had at other times in my life. I’m 38, and I’ve only had a few LTR’s, but plenty of more short-term things. I can’t imagine someone getting to my age with experiencing intimacy with a woman (or man, if they’re so inclined), in the flesh. Monogamy has nothing to do with it.

      • Arthur Schopenhauer, the great fap pioneer, would disagree with your rat-like existence.

      • One makes their own choices……..many still inhibited by religious values taught in their younger days..as you obviously are.

        • You are a bit judgemental here aren’t you? I am an atheist, the reason most people can’t listen to anything that is contra-porn is that religion told us to hate it for all the wrong reasons – aren’t you one of them?

          • As an Atheist I view the Human animal as just one of the species
we share our planet with .
Sex Activity in he animal world…animals do masturbate……animals show homosexuality. NATURAL

If someone chooses to view porn..that is their choice…what is extreme? To say that it “overrules” them to commit sex crimes is an idiotic excuse for unacceptable behavior in our society ..

What about the famous (and infamous) politicians that are having “woman” problems at this time..did they view too much porn?.
You might profess to be an Atheist…but at one time you were a good little Sunday school pupil were you not..or am I completely off the mark?
There are tons of porn on the internet..FREE.Most of it is NOT appealing ,but pleasing sites CAN be found..and if I spend ten or 15 minutes on them once in a while, who cares? Even my wife (of 46 happy years) has no problem. She teases me about it and we have a good laugh.

          • > but at one time you were a good little Sunday school pupil were you not

Wow what a jerk you are. No I wasn’t, I come from an atheist country, no sunday church, religious education or denial of evolution that you get in North America, so please stop picturing me in a way that suits you. It’s quite lame if you do that in your life too.

As for sex activity in animal world, I believe I addressed that in my OP.

If you really are an atheist than you know a thing or two about evolution ant it’s purpose. The animals that are observed to masturbate are usually beta males who don’t get their genes passed doing it while they watch “alpha male” copulate e.g monkeys. The point of evolution is the natural selection or as some put it “survival of the fittest” isn’t it? How is a masturbating monkey watching superior male copulate part of the “natural selection”?

I have nothing against fapping, I do believe porn that we have now – high speed, free and endless options – can lead to harmful effects. Porn is proven to lead to a “novelty addiction” you seek new stimulation all the time, and high speed porn allws you to get over 100 different pics in few minutes, making it very addictive. I don’t believe our brains are ready for that and there are over 50 studies proving my point. And I am not talking about pop-scienece “animals do it too” but legitimate sources.

            http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0,5&q=porn+addiction
            http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/pornography-addiction-leads-to-same-brain-activity-as-alcoholism-or-drug-abuse-study-shows-8832708.html

And maybe porn is OK for you but like Zimbardo study shows it has quite some effect on young guys who are just about to enter the world of relationships.

Of course these points are hard to get over to some if all you amount to is labelling people by stereotypes like “christian” while you yourself don’t feel a need to provide any solid arguments except “animals do it too” and “once you were a good little pupil in Sunday school”.

Let’s not waste more time here. Take care.

          • Nice attempt to boost your credibility with biotruths, but in this day and age evolution is functionally a non-concern, and increasing number of people, such as myself, are choosing to avoid having children anyways.

Like I’ve said before, porn is having a harmful effect on young people’s expectation because sex-education in north america is complete and utter garbage. For most, porn is the most frank and realistic sex education they will ever get because, by and large, north american sexual morality is still rooted firmly in sunday school.

Porn is going to spread in popularity whether any of us like it or not, and it is entirely the responsibility of parents and schools to determine whether or not this change is harmful.

          • Well of course in your world the christians are participating in evolution by the simple matter that they reproduce, while the cathars are inferior beta males.

I mean, if that’s your capacity for reason, then it’s pretty damn poor.

Logically, fapping is a highly superior form of life, various orders of magnitude better than the physical life. In fapping far more storytelling and aesthetics occurs, in comparison with those inferior beings that let the constant feeding of their bodies drag them down to a physical existence, where there is a minuscule amount of symbolic creativity going on. Fapping is like the internet, an endless dream of symbolic creativity, whereas your pitiful logic grinds away at how the fapper’s body can’t divide and copy itself– copy what, though, for what is a body without a mind, what is an object without a subject? If this anticipated alpha male you fantasize about is just a copy of a copy and is too busy reproducing to form itself as a subject, I’m sure you can explain your absent center of being.

Of course the fapper’s soul can’t copy and divide itself because it’s too busy living. Those who fap lead far better lives than those running marathons and delaying their orgasms through tiresome courtship/property rituals.

The farcical reduction of your case is that a worker working round the clock with 12 children is an alpha male, while a fapper playing videogames all day while watching thousands of movies is a beta, which is evidently the other way around. The worker can pick up a newspaper and have his symbolic order confirmed and masturbated on all he wants though, but the fapper is clearly, vastly, a superior being.

Why aren’t clapitalism and socialism funding studies that examine the rewiring that comes with having a job, and the lack of imagination of bodies subjected to cumbersome routines, mythologized and frothed up by the rampant poverty beneath? That might well be because fapping goes against the grain, the grail and God, into the splendor of the grass of His Noobly Appendage.

          • “Sex Activity in he animal world…animals do masturbate……animals show homosexuality. NATURAL”

The basic flaw of this argument is this; it assumes that if something is seen in the rest of the animal kingdom (in nature) it is deemed NATURAL and therefore should be accepted as good or right by us humans. IE Homosexual tendencies and masturbation can been seen in other animals therefore it is natural and to be accepted by the human race.

I would say that if we follow the logic of this argument then we have a ways to go in accepting some other ‘NATURAL’ behaviours. For example, some females eat their young days after giving birth. Some species eat their mate after they procreate. I would hope that as humans we will never come to accepting these practices as natural or acceptable. On the other side of the argument, almost all (if not all) sex in the animal kingdom is for the purpose of procreation/reproduction. Therefore, according to the logic of this argument, recreational sex would be unnatural and should be shunned by humans. I think that most of our western society would disagree with that logic, don’t you?

          • ENJOY your posts ( agree or not is another question))

You obviously have a hardon against masturbation.
Whether you accept it or not human`s ARE animals.
(IF you are an Atheist you accept this?)

It is only LOGICAL to compare ourselves with other animals.
To say that ALL that transacts in nature should apply to our species is somewhat ridiculous

Animals DO enjoy “recreational sex” IF you had spent an hour or so at the West Edmonton Mall (Alberta) watching the dolphins you would understand what I have seen IN PERSON.
The teen age Dolphins are as active as any human teen.
It was definitely NOT sex for reproduction.
There is a species of monkey that uses sex to say “hello”… (from a reputable nature article )Google it yourself.

In nature, males have to ward of others. Wolves and primates

dominate for the best females. In the human( animal )world
one does not see super rich males with unattractive trophy wives.
As for mothers in the wild..they will eat their young under certain circumstance ( level of health and nutrition available). Males will eat the young of others to mate with the female in furthering their OWN D.N.A
This IS NOT AS SHOCKING AS…Human males setting off car bombs that kill innocents..and worse permanently and horribly MAIM men ..women children.
Looking at GOOD porn…and there is such a thing..among the free crap on line……as well as masturbating to dampen the sex urge so one CAN concentrate on whatever is one`s goal
is natural and harmless. NOT masturbating before a strenuous sport so competitive sexual aggression can be utilized is understandable.

            men

      • If you equate ‘going out and meeting women’ and ‘goals and ambitions’ with your sex drive then I’d say fapping is definitely the least of your issues.

      • You’ve misunderstood the meaning of the word ”evolution”. What happens is a gene mutates and that mutation reproduces successfully and there’s a mini-copy of it out to do its shit. Evolution isn’t as great as it’s cracked up to be, you mutant.

    • It’s true that printed words and paintings have been around for a very long time. But can you imagine a bunch of 15 years olds walking down to the coliseum 4 times a day to masturbate to a statue of Venus?

      What’s different about Internet porn:
      1) Extreme content, hard core, every fetish imaginable and many unimaginable.

      2) It’s videos of real people having “real sex”. Unlike playboy or still images of sex acts, videos replace the imagination of an adolescence.

      3) Endless novelty (unlike Roman art, once a month Playboy, or even rental). Each new scene, new actor, new 3 minute clip. gives a big squirt of dopamine – novelty always activates dopamine and the reward center. You are controlling your dopamine levels with a mouse. You never become bored, your dopamine never falls. This becomes your new reality.

      4) Unlike a boring statue, or one person, a young person can click on something shocking, surprising, or anxiety producing moment to moment – all raise dopamine and can increase sexual arousal.

      5) Adolecents or younger have 24 hr access to everything. A young man can masturbate every day to gang bangs, cream pies and rape – for years – before his first kiss. Not only will he learn everything about sex from hard core porn, he may train his brain to need constant novelty and fetishes that a real person cannot match.

      6) The adolescent brain is undergoing extreme rewiring. It’s job is to rewire to the environment in order to successfully reproduce. With the advent of high speed internet and free tube sites, adolescents are now wiring their sexuality to 20 tabs of 3 minute hard core videos – and few videos resemble real sex.

In the last few years, about 60 brain studies on internet addicts have been published. Every study, without exception, has found the same brain changes as seen in drug addicts. Some of those studies included porn users. To suggest that the internt, circa 2014, is no different than a roman statue, is ludicrous.

      • Rubbish latter day phrenology. Certain people are angry at having lost terrain to the empire of fap.

        • The cartel is reacting negatively.

        • Another well reasoned rebuttal from “fap”… you’re on a roll.

          • You’re not going to corner a segment of the population into the addiction nuthouse just because they’re too busy having fun fapping to respond.

      • Alot of what you say about porn is quite true. And so what. You are saying that we dont have a right to feed our bodies with what we choose as adults? Heres the thing. Porn is NOT going away. Its a technology thats only just started – so far its only visual and one sided where the viewer is just an observer. In the not so distant future it will be immerse. It will use all the senses. It will be interractive and participatory. It may not even involve real actors. And there isnt a damned thing you can do to stop it. Because a lot of people want it. We will procreate via other means. Food started out by being there for nourishment. Somewhere along the line this was lost and now food and how we treat it is something else. Our sexuality is fundamentally the same thing. A very significant number of people in our society dont like this because their control over us will be disrupted, and traditional sex in committed relationships will seem very quaint. We are going to have to deal with all the fall out issues this may bring. Like how we raise children, and that women will loose alot of control that the now possess through the marriage contract.

      • What unbelievably inane arguments. I am not talking about words and paintings. The ancient Romans were having orgies, and as the average life expectancy back then was about 30-40 years, they were probably teenagers as well. This argument/debate has nothing to do with extremes or fetishes. It has to do with looking at sexually explicit material and masturbating. There is no legitimate scientific evidence anywhere that suggests watching sexually explicit material and masturbating is harmful in any way. Your arguments are ludicrous.

    • hi Richie Rich yea sure porn has been around for decades i do agree with you scientific evidence has shown only good about sex and masturbation… is science static?

      • Well, normally once something is scientifically proven, then yes it is. Last time I checked, the earth was still round. Also, I can only assume that sex and masturbation have been around since the dawn of time. If there were anything unhealthy about it, I rather doubt we’d have come this far.

    • DON’T STOP THE FAP!

      • Damned right..no matter what age either.
Sex SHOULD be ENJOYED whether on one`s own or with a willing partner.( Male or female one`s choice of whats available )

My own intensive research over MANY years …….Vaginal intercourse IS the best…………followed by blow…jobs(male or female ) giving or getting.
The old reliable standard …THE FAP..is not equal to using the above “machinery” ……but it IS ALWAYS GOOD doing “JOBS” by hand.

    • I think that we live in a very indulgent society in many ways, it can be quite liberating to just try and deny yourself something, even if there isn’t concrete evidence it will make your life better. Just the act of exercising your self-discipline might.

I also have one thing to add that wasn’t in this article. The male perception of what the female body looks like. Since I haven’t looked at porn in about 6 months, I’ve never been more attracted to my fiance. It’s not fair to her that I can just click and click, till I find increasingly perfect women online. Once you stop looking at porn for awhile the most amazing thing happens, you find even small amounts of visible flesh to be incredibly arousing.

      • Wow, you’re so out of touch. What society are you talking about? The one where you 30 years for stealing a pair of socks under three strikes law, the one where you get 25 years for crack residue, the one in the TV documentary ‘Carrier’ with everyone in the navy leading miserable lives, the one where the smarter sentencing act has to be muscled into existence, the one where half a million americans are sued for downloading torrents…

Streaming porn is also part of a neutral internet, so it might disappear soon and we can return to ghettoing porn.

    • Yours is an EXCELLENT POST……mine would be redundant.

    • Obviously you have never been addicted to Porn or Masturbation.

      • Define “addicted”. I’ve been looking at porn and masterbating on almost a daily basis for over 40yrs now. Does that make me an addict? It’s certainly not something that I see as a problem. In fact, it will worry me more when the urge to do such things goes away.

        • You just defined addiction yourself by telling me you fap to porn daily lol

          • Maybe you just don’t have a lot going on upstairs. First, according to you, I have “obviously” never been addicted. Now, according to you, apparently I am addicted. Look, we are sexual creatures, like all other creatures on this planet. It’s programmed into our DNA. Are you a religious nut or something? My point was, and still is, giving up masturbation is idiotic. It’s normal. People masturbate. Get over it. I’ve never seen any scientific evidence that watching porn or masturbating is harmful. Do you have some point to make here?

          • Or maybe I commented on one of your post that did not state that you Fap daily. So at the time I did not know how deep in the Fapping hole you were until you told me that you fap to porn daily so now I see clearly you are an addict that has no chance of recovery from your addiction.Yeah I have evidence lol I am the evidence.Trust me there are thousands of people who are evidence in themselves.

          • There’s nothing wrong with masturbation. It’s only a problem when people use at as a substitute for sex, rather than something they do in addition to actual sex with another human being.

  2. Christian anti-fappers: masturbating is immoral cuz god says so (like everything else it’s in the bible)
Liberal anti-fappers: masturbating is immoral cuz you’re objectifying women

If they’re proposing stopping fapping outright that’s probably as unhealthy as being a chronic fapper/porn consumer.

As a fapper (like most normal people) myself, the idea Armando propagates, that regular fapping means that I’m some knuckle dragging, nose breathing objectifier of women, is ridiculous. Speak for yourself Armando. Don’t assume other people are like you.

Next thing you know they’ll be telling us porn causes violence and violent video games cause school shootings.

    • Most “normal” people, are also leading quite mediocre lives. Maybe some should consider going out and living it rather than hiding at home and replacing healthy sex and social interaction by stalking other people have sex and a real human touch with DYI. The studies like Zimbardo’s show the state of “most normal” young males is not so great. And high speed internet porn is only a recent phenomenon.

“Probably” unhealthy is just your assessment or rather a wish. There were very few studies done because most men today are porn consumers so there was no control group. NoFap is missing control group and most people posted significant improvements in their lives – including increased productivity, motivation, confidence, less anxiety, more physical energy and confidence to go out more often, socialise and have a healthy sex instead of fapping.

I doubt you can convince a guy who is now having sex instead of fapping that he should have stayed with fapping like “most normal people” do.

      • The body is a trap, aesthetics is far better due to cost. The vast majority of people having physical sex have various orders of magnitude less sex than them who belong to the church of fap.

      • I love that last sentence where you set up a strict dichotomy between sex and fapping. Where if you’re having sex you’re not fapping and vice versa. It’s humorous because I neither said nor implied that fapping to the exclusion of sex was normal (healthy/adaptive/whatever)…at least in the pathologizing medical/psychological model.

I take your point though. Fapping causes blindness, hairy palms and warts.

PS: I don’t want to convince anti-fappers of anything. If they want to continue to be maladaptive that’s fine. THEY’RE the ones trying to convince people of something. THEY’RE the ones with a movement, a website, a challenge. All I want them to do is quit pushing their “morality” on other people and making unfounded assumptions about the consequences of other people’s choices – like fapping means you don’t respect women, cough, cough, Armando.

    • Pray tell, what do the Rightards do to condemn porn?

    • So you mean to say the capitards with clothes factories in Bangladesh allow the factory workers to fap while they slave?

    • Good post(yours)

  3. Wait, so you’re telling me porn is for masturbation?

Damn, until I read that lede I had no idea! Thanks, Maclean’s!

    • They’re wrong. It’s for the dialogue and compelling stories.

      • It’s the reason I became a pizza delivery guy.

        • Oh, but Mr. Delivery Man, I don’t have any money ….. :O

          • Also the reason I bought a wah pedal when I learned guitar.
            Bowm-chicka-wowwow.

  4. It’ll only catch on when someone figures out how to make a buck off it.

  5. Outstanding article. It is great that this is being approached scientifically and without all the moral baggage that various perspectives have piled upon it.

  6. After seeing the second coming of Jesus, I swore off watching Mexican porn. :)

  7. This is a great article, I’ve been hearing more and more on this. The truth is porn is far more addictive then alcohol and gambling, even more so than teenagers. Average consumers of Porn, cannot break the habit, and constantly return, just like addicts. Porn is and addiction, and the more people hear this the more we can warn young men about it dangers.

For those who doubt it, give it a try, one week challenge, how difficult could it be?

    • Oh yes, pleasure is bad, not enough of Maggie’s farm going on…

  8. Sensory overload in video games and HD porn feeds is a real thing. Technology often moves faster today than we can understand its effects on our health.

I believe that over-Indulgence in anything isn’t healthy for the brain or body. I don’t think we (or perhaps in some personality types) always have the ability to tell ourselves where the healthy boundaries are.

Here’s an interview with serial killer Ted Bundy on the dangers of porn: http://www.pureintimacy.org/f/fatal-addiction-ted-bundys-final-interview/

    • Since when do we get our science or truth from serial killers? According to dr Marty Kline “If convicted mass murderer Ted Bundy had said that watching Bill Cosby reruns motivated his awful crimes, he would have been dismissed as a
deranged sociopath. Instead, Bundy has said his pornography addiction
made him do it–which many people treated as the conclusion of a
      thoughtful social scientist.Why?”

I suggest you search deeply within yourself to find why your ‘beliefs’ are directing you against porn – yes i get that it is offensive to some. But so are many things in our lives.

  9. Guess how much I fapped when I was a teenager before I discovered internet pornography? About once a day. Guess how much I fap now WITH internet pornography? About once a day. If you take a bunch of addicts and like Don Jon, and take away their addiction of course they will be more productive. They are wasting hours a day watching pornography. Just because you can’t handle yourpporn don’t ruin it for the rest of us. All in all though, I am glad you found a scapegoat for why you suck at life.

    • I love your post. But i must caution you – its quality not quantity.

      • I’m sure a starving person would prefer quantity of food over quality.

      • I would certainly agree………The “really good stuff” is not all that plentiful although it can be found. I cannot understand why anyone would spend hours watching …. a lot of porn is a turn off rather than a turn on.

    • YOU have it…another good post.

    • I’m an occasional consumer of porn, (certainly not daily—not even weekly), and I’m not an addict. But many people are porn addicts. I also drink, and I’m not an alcoholic, but that doesn’t make alcoholism any less real. Most of the NoFappers seem more concerned with improving their lives than moralizing. I don’t see any of them calling for censorship, or demanding that others follow their path. I don’t understand why people are getting so butthurt over other people’s choices.

  10. NOFAP is a fad and it will eventually go away. Porn is very useful to single guys and guys that dont care to get involved in so called politically correct “meaningful” and “healthy” relationships with women. But you have to learn self-control and restraint with porn. If you over do it day after day its going to have problems. Dont get me wrong I love women and i have many relationships with them on different levels. But i totally reject the idea of commitment – its a myth propagated by many feminist and part of the culture we accepted. Sexual monogamy is most likely not natural for men. Today we live in a very woman dominated world. If you don’t believe it – go ask any man who have gone through an acrimonious divorce. Its not worth it. The laws and social norms perpetuated by all these pop psycho geeks like Gary Wilson are all based on the premise that we need to be in “healthy” monogamous relationships enslaved to women. Porn from a sexual standpoint is sustainable – there is any amount of good porn to keep you sexually sated for as long as you want. In a committed relationship you are going to get increasingly fed up of that woman after a short while. When she changes and tries to change you, you will become increasingly disinterested in her. Whats the solution – divorce? – and risk the expense, going to jail for various reasons, loosing your property? Or will you shut up in live with a problematic person. And the myths – Porn causes you to objectify women – this is junk science – never proven, studies show the opposite to be true. Porn causes us to harm women – the opposite is true. Porn causes us to have unrealistic expectation – no it doesnt , it causes us to be more open and communicative about our sexual desires, and not keep it bottled up, much of our sexual desires are determined when we are very young. Porn causes us to want more and more extreme material – NOT true – what most men want is just novelty in the same scenarios that match their fantasy. Most porn is gonzo/violent – NO WAY, most porn is ordinary sex OR solo women in different scenarios. Gonzo/violent is very uncommon. Well see how long this fad backed by pseudo science lasts. Porn is going to get better and more real as technology makes this possible. The star trek holodeck idea isn’t too far off. More and more men are giving up committed relationships with women, because simply – its not worth it.

    • i would agree and disagree with you
porn can either make you objectify women/men or uninterested in women/men try to have a look at the film shame and some which are rare nowadays educate us

choice of women/men almost is a factor, wondering how many people has ever think of why a man or woman change?? most of us react to situation. lets see: our brain record everything consciously and unconsciously something we want to remember while others no.
so lets say i hurt you badly will you still consider me like your friend? most of us will hate the one who hurt us and not try to understand what really happen and solve the problem with a win win situation. most of us are not willing to understand others and find solution which will really help instead we go for the easiest way. divorce fight etc
its not just man its women too dear in a relationship both man and women are affected. if you make X move the effect will be on both partner
so a relationship is made up of two people working together in every field

what porn do to your brain does not only affect you but your partner too and family

      • The whole point is NOT to have a partner or a family.
        Hence, fap.

        • yea sure if you are not interested in partner or family, fap is best!!! i just rep according to the situation he gave… if fap is best for you go for it

        • The whole point is NOT to be in a committed relationship. Has nothing to do with family or even sex with women. Sex with women is great as is masturbation. Its apples and oranges. Enjoying one don’t necessarily mean that we cant enjoy the other. The problem is that if we masturbate too much we wont enjoy sex with women and vice versa, esp if its the same woman over and over. The problem arises when we are in a committed relationship and there are rules and monogamy. The issue of children is unrelated. Feminist want us to believe that in order to raise children we must be committed to one woman, and then that woman can use those children to punish the man using societal norms, laws and other resources (some of which involve sociopath/illegal behavior, when he wavers from her desires. Feminism further destroy women/girls by indoctrinating them in this way and destroying their sexual rights.

      • This is the biggest crock of shit I have ever read in my life.

  11. There have been numerous studies that show how longevity is directly linked with sexuality. While putting off first breeding age increases longevity, once puberty is reached, halt of sexuality is a marker to biological systems the the individual only needs to survive a very short period longer. IE Past breeding age = time to die for most biological specimens.

If you’re a male with the beginnings of Male pattern baldness, feel free to stop fapping for a month and watch your hair start falling out in clumps. Then, if you’re like me, find a woman much younger and have sex daily for a number of years and notice the ten year reduction in all signs of aging.

Sexuality suppression is just the most recent attack in the war on masculinity. Men are generally just too simple to figure it out. So please excuse me if I’m not impressed by the most recent guilt-attack on sexuality.

    • Its been long known that there are significant health benefits from
orgasm in males – especially as it pertains to prostate cancer and
longevity. Why is this research not explored further. Why do the
researchers use actual sex with another person as opposed to any
orgasmic event? I once had a few exchanges with Marina Robinson (Gary
Wilson’s wife and project partner) and she was insisting that the
benefit to a man is when there is vaginal penetration. Really! Yes its
all about the woman even when we are measuring benefit to men. I would
bet that Masturbation is more important than sex with women considering that
men have far more solitary sex than sex with women – even married men,
and sex appears to have a very significant role in human existence
outside procreation purpose as evidence from the work done in
      evolutionary psychology.

      • i see it differently
when guy fap whether man or women we do it with an object whether it is finger or toy. the object been other thing than a real penis or vagina has a different pressure on penis or vagina. the object in fact just frost against our ‘skin’ while the real thing create a connection of skin A to skin B, different pressure and much more benefit than skin C its like you cant eat with your penis

        just my thought

      • Hmmm…the research itself is showing that Robinson is generally correct, although there’s a lot of messy data. For example, review of scientific literature in The Journal of Sexual Medicine – The Relative Health Benefits of Different Sexual Activities (2010) – concluded the following:

“A wide range of better psychological and physiological health indices
are associated specifically with penile-vaginal intercourse. Other
sexual activities have weaker, no, or (in the cases of masturbation and
anal intercourse) inverse associations with health indices.”

This is not to take away from anyone’s choices, of course. But it’s interesting that not all sexual activities are identical in their effects. Also see researcher Rui Miguel Costa’s summary of the current masturbation research in the Archives of Sexual Behavior: “Masturbation is Related to Psychopathology and Prostate Dysfunction.”

        • I am suspicious of any research where political correctness is involved. And this whole sex/internet addiction reeks of that. Like when Satoshi Kanazawa did his piece on black women. The entire community (mental health professionals) was in uproar. The profession does not quite have what it takes to be true scientsts as evidenced by the countless objections, statistical flaws, fallacies, conflict of interest etc. That’s why many are skeptical when break through are claimed. When ever there is sex/gender involved – its likely to be garbage.

  12. Dont know how to delete a post, so this appears.

  13. Everything in moderation. We live in a world of extremes. People think you can fix one extreme with another. It’s either drought or flood in this society.

    • Good way of putting it.

I also think today’s young men are just far too feminine….and even when they appear macho, they’re actually pretty feminine by nature when things don’t go their way.

There’s too much of thinking the clothes make the man. They’re more interested in appearing to be something, than actually being something.

“Shortly after joining NoFap, he found himself doing what he had
previously considered unthinkable: sharing a casual joke with a female
cashier at the grocery store. Recently, he fell into conversation with
an attractive young woman in line. “Before, I would have probably just
stood there stonily and wanted to talk to her but resented her for being
hot,” he says. “Instead, she smiled at me, I smiled at her and we had a
really nice conversation and ended up walking down the street for
several blocks together. That never would have happened 37 days ago.””

By denying himself porn, he’s made himself seek out the old fashioned way of fulfilling sexual needs. Nothing particularly wrong with that. But this says something even worse: He wants sex, so since he no longer has
an outlet in porn, he’s willing to play along to get it. Wanting to be with someone is one thing, but the intentions behind wanting it are another. If he truly wanted a meaningful companionship, he wouldn’t have to stop fapping in order to be motivated to get it. He’s just reducing his motivations to sex. This may not be the case all the time, but it can lead to some very superficial cultural changes. If anything, he’ll just start thinking with his penis.

I always find it funny when people try to say something bad about porn while including men at the forefront of the discussion, because when you really look at the bigger picture, men may consume porn…..but women are the ones making it. So the next time you see a gif of a woman strapped into some kind of contraption spinning while liquids spew from her body….just remember, women perpetuate porn more so by starring in it than the men who consume it.

Furthermore, I don’t think that not masturbating is going to guarantee any type of meaningful relationship. A guy could not masturbate for a year, and still not find anyone to be with in that time. So what’s the net result? nothing. If anything, he’ll probably be on a bigger downward spiral because he’ll realize that it wasn’t porn keeping him from a relationship all along, but rather himself, his habits, his health, his hygiene, or whatever else it might be.

  14. Does this mean that having sex with my girlfriend every day is also bad? Or masturbating without watching porn, just with thoughts from previous experiences?

    • Having sex with your girlfriend everyday? That is GREAT the week ends are the best when you can make it twice.

Masturbation without porn ? What do you think us horny males did before the internet. Developed our memories (My Good old days)

  15. This is yet another attempt to demonize & repress male sexuality. (When females flick the bean it is empowering.) The PC crowd is loathe to use religious arguments, so pseudo-science and the rights of women to have their every relationship demand met will be the rally cry.
This “movement” will be met with a resounding “eff ‘em.”

    • Gotta love how everyone needs a group to tell them what to do as an individual. Guess they’ll have to change Kindergarden instead of telling kids to keep their hands to themselves, they’ll tell them to keep their hands to themselves, but not touching themselves. Touch nothing!

This article gave me a headache in my right eye. I’m suing.

      • Mom said you’d go blind doing that.
        I just need glasses.

        • You could build a camera into your glasses and make your own porn!
Fully charged, you could get three hours wireless battery life out of that :p

          • I walked in on my roommate while masturbating last week. Actually, I was masturbating when I walked into the room, and my wife hates when I call her my roommate.
Seriously, fapping is good for the ears, due to listening intently for anyone who may interrupt…
            ;~)

          • okay, that made me laugh so hard it brought tears. I thought that was leading up to an awkward moment of getting busted by a neighbor or someone else that would be equally em(bare)assing.
            Best laugh all day :)
(I’m going to put that one on my Pro list of reasons to live alone!!)

          • Every good Buddhist knows the Palma Sutra.

          • Glasses on while making whoopee? That’s a great idea!

          • Use wisely grasshopper… there may be some moments where poor vision could make for a better sexual experience. Always good to have handy though, so you don’t trip while running away the next morning! :)

          • Wearing glasses would take away the best part of sex. The eye gazing. Mm m m m m m mmmmm!

  16. If you’re equating porn sex with real sex and it’s ruining your relationships, porn isn’t your problem. You’re just an idiot. What you see on the screen is not real life, and that goes for any movie/tv show, not just porn.

    • Somehow I don’t think you understand how reinforcement learning works… what you consciously think matters very little to what effect it has on you.

The porn debate is full of overthinkers and theorists and most people on both sides have a complete lack of scientific understanding, religious bias and are full of PC bull. Try it, if it doesn’t help then you lost nothing but a few weeks of porn. If it does then according to the nofap testimonials you’re in for a wild ride.

      • I do know how reinforcement learning works, and there’s no religious bias here (though I’m sure it’s there in some others). My point is that are bigger problems if you don’t understand the difference between a movie and real life.

    • “You’re just an idiot.”

Or you’re, you know, a human.

      • No, you’re an idiot. If you don’t know the difference between real life and a movie, then you’re an idiot. It’s that simple.

        • You seem to be quite hostile. Hopefully your bias doesn’t get in the way of this discussion.

“It’s that simple.” Well, actually it isn’t. The human brain is a very complex organ of which we still know very little. To begin, porn shouldn’t be equated to movies or TV. Porn is quite different in that there are no special effects, no CGI, FMV, or any of that “hollywood magic”. It is, for the most part, two very attractive people getting it on with each other. (ever wonder why men are suddenly so concerned about penis size?)

There are no smells, no awkwardness, no performance anxiety, no interruptions, no mental distractions (did I leave the oven on?) in porn. It is very divorced from reality yet is presented in a way that is not.

Now, also consider that many begin watching porn prior to their first sexual encounter. Impressionable, post-pubescent minds are easily shaped by external factors. Especially when one considers the cocktail of chemicals that the brain releases during orgasm.

To attempt any argument claiming that a person whose sexual expectations are in some way shaped by porn is an “idiot” is simply mean-spirited and wrong.

Frankly, I’m not even sure why one would make the comment that you did for an article such as this. It all seems a bit unnecessary.

          • Thanks for making my point. If that teenager watches a Hollywood movie and knows it’s not the same as real life, why would they watch a porn movie and think it’s real? Porn is exactly like movies and TV in the fact that it’s NOT REAL; what do special effects have to do with it? I was a teenager when I saw my first porn, before I first had sex, and I never thought that it was real life.

People who say they’re addicted to porn or that it ruined their life are weak-minded and weak-willed. You can disagree if you want, but it’s a fact that overcoming addiction comes down to willpower. What’s my proof? People quit cold turkey all the time. Quit smoking, quit drinking, quit drugs, quit porn. If you want to quit, then you can. It’s that simple. And I’m speaking as someone who HAS overcome addiction cold turkey.

“Impressionable, post-pubescent minds are easily shaped by external factors.” Not as easily as you think, or teens would just be automatons. Influenced, yes, but everybody still makes their own decisions, even teens. People frequently make bad decisions, but that’s besides the point. Nobody else made the choice for them, they chose for themselves.

Yes, I am quite hostile, and there’s a reason: People need to start taking responsibility for their actions, and stupidity isn’t a valid defense. Drugs didn’t ruin your life, YOU did. Gambling didn’t ruin your life, YOU did. Porn didn’t ruin your life, YOU did. I’m sick and tired of people blaming other things for their own problems. It all comes down to willpower and personal responsibility, and a little common sense (something that far too many are sorely lacking, but again, besides the point).

Yes I’m hostile; yes I’m harsh. But I stand by what I said. If you think porn is real life, then you’re a fool.

          • Yes ..you are hostile …yes you harsh
            YOU are not politically correct.
YOU ARE displaying common sense and intelligence.
IF more individuals shared YOUR thought process our justice
and political system along with Society in general would NOT be in the crapper…GOOD POST

          • Taking responsibility for their actions and showing willpower is exactly what these guys are doing. If porn use isn’t causing you problems, great. But anything can become an addiction. No sense in belittling people for taking the initiative to conquer their own.

          • The solution is better sexual education, not yet more kink-shaming by the moral minority.

          • They aren’t “kink-shaming”. You can do whatever you want. These particular people simply don’t want to masturbate anymore. Big deal. It’s like calling out Alcoholics Anonymous, “these guys need to stop beer-shaming”. Ridiculous.

Seriously, did anyone even read the article?

PS More gov’t programs and spending is probably not a good idea (and unnecessary). Once again, just live and let live.

  17. It’s funny how in some of these comments, some people seem to think porn is the same thing as sex.

I do agree that too much or too little sex is not good for you, but I don’t personally think anyone needs porn the way people need sex (or sleep, or socializing). I know people here will disagree and flame me for saying this. Porn may have a place in society because as others say, it’s been around for ever but so have many other unhealthy things.

Sex is a social activity. Porn isn’t (even when you use with another person). Porn has been shown to increase ED (especiallly among younger men).

There are many many artcles about this, here is only one:

    http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/therapy-matters/201205/does-porn-contribute-ed.

You can find many more by googling “porn correlation with erectile dysfunction”

Here’s another article that says porn activates the same centers of the brain as booze:

    http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/new-study-porn-activates-the-same-addiction-centers-in-the-brain-as-alcohol

Porn is not good for people. It’s as simple as that. Dress it up as a relationship-pick-me-up or whatever you want. Doesn’t make it true.

I applaud these young men for struggling to free themselves from a negative social behavior that is addicting.

    Let the flaming begin!! mwahahahah

    • Marriage is no longer good for men either.
Gimme rye & lemme make my own choices.

      • Fair enough LOL.
Side question: why is marriage not good for men?

        • Cost/benefit analysis. Lose/lose.

        • Not to mention unnecessary risk. When women feel betrayed, and they start accusing you of DV, child abuse, etc OR you dont play by their rules, the courts, social workers, evaluators will be on their side. You will loose everything you’ve worked for, they may destroy your relationship with your kids. You could get locked up for missing a maintenance/alimony payment. While there are no such obligations on the mother. You could loose your job, You could have to mind another mans child until that child becomes an adult, while said man lives in your house. That said man could be abusing/f#$%ing your offspring under your ex-es nose and there may be very little you could do about it. Further if it is proven that your ex was lying about any allegations or even caught doing something illegal, courts are reluctant to apply punitive measures. While these atrocities don’t all happen in every case – many divorces have at least a few of these elements. Men are idiots when it comes to the reality of marriage – women know what they are doing. Studies/surveys show that significant numbers of well off women will ask a ‘lesser’ man for a prenup where most men wont. Pew Polls show that women are more desirous of marrying where men are significantly less desirous of marrying, when compared with attitudes of a few decades ago. This is most likely the reason. The media doesn’t help either. They show men in funny and stupid situations whereas they are much more careful when it comes to how they portray women. Frequently, men/fathers are described as deadbeat who need to “man up” where as women are always portrayed as the victims and oppressed. Most men are oblivious, but some are getting it.

Marriage is a highly imperfect ideology that came about when agriculture became important and a man had to know who his child was so that he could pass on his property. Sexual monogamy is not natural for humans, its cultural. Boys are thought that this is ideal because of the environment it provides for children, but it has nothing to do with children, its all about the woman.

          • Well, divorce is certainly big business too. It ruins people financially. I think you are right about how the media portrays men these days.

There’s this one board game that comes to mind (can’t remember it’s name) and it features two male-female couples playing girls against the boys. The girls are smartly dressed and have confident body language. The boys literally have pencils stuck up their noses and are acting like goof-balls.

I don’t understand why the media-pendulum had to swing so far over to the other side. Did we have to reduce men in order to build up women? Could we not have just built up the women without expense to men?

Anyway, your comments give me lots of things to think about – we’re way off the thread topic LOL.

    • Lack of masturbation for men has also been shown to decrease your second chances of ever making a first impression, if you come and go within 2 minutes. Which can have a negative impact on self confidence and also lead to erectile dysfunction.
      Scientifically and socially proven :)
Wednesday’s article: Why frequent masturbation will dramatically enhance your sex life.
Thursday’s article: Sex causes brain tumors

      • LOL. I never mentioned masturbation and I’m not suggesting it’s bad. I’m suggesting porn is bad. One can come (pun intended LOL) without the other.

        • Ahhh… but, this article does not want you to separate the two. Notice how one leads to the other? No porn equals better life and social skills, no masturbation along with that and damn…. your life is about to become amazing!
Once it does, there’ll be a support group for that.

          • The merchants who sell palm razors will be out of business too.
As for me, I was with the same woman from the time I was 20, until I was 42. In the same week I was told that I had a fractured spinal column, crushed nerve roots, severe complex sleep apnea, and that the love of my life had hated me for years, and only stuck around because I was so good in bed. And that she’s a compulsive liar, and had an affair with the guy I thought was my best friend since I was 12. I’m on the mend, but what the hell am I going to do without porn?

          • Well, that’s the most awful thing I’ve heard all day. Least you know your good in bed!!
Seems like the ex the ex-best friend deserve each other. Now they can have the bad sex they want with other and lie about how great it is.
On your behalf, I hope she develops a raging prescription drug habit from multiple botched face lifts!

          • That happened about 18 years earlier. She told me about it in her breakup speech.
Do I have enough material for a blues or country song yet?

          • If your dog runs away…. not only do you have enough material, you’ll win an award!

          • The ex got Rocky. He worshiped me. He’s a corgi-cocker spaniel mix stray we got from the pound. Looks like a border collie who took up smoking as a pup.

          • Admit it… you miss the dog more don’t you. lol

          • Are you on FB?

          • I am. Same name as here.

      • Every soldier test-fires his weapon to be battle-ready.

  18. Very interesting article! But, dear editors: it’s Zimbardo, not Zombardo.

  19. Give up porn, ok. But dont give up masturbation, unless you want early onset of Prostate Cancer. You should ejaculate (sex or masturbate doesnt matter) atleast twice a week, or you run a much higher risk of developing prostate cancer, and at a younger age.

  20. Neo-puritans are going to neo-puritan I guess. Good for them. They should go out and fulfil their natural urges by manipulating women into sleeping with them like regular God-fearing folk.

  21. “One day, after he’d read a book, exercised and taken two cold showers, he dug out the violin”
Taken two cold showers LOL. Sounds like he was going through withdrawal a bit. Does this guy have a job, because it doesn’t really sound like it if you have time to take two cold showers after working out.

  22. Actually, you know what would be the best thing for the planet…if everyone stopped having sex and just watched porn and masturbated. That way we wouldn’t have children, which means the population would not keep rising exponentially. That means there would be more food, more jobs, reduction of our carbon footprint, kids wouldn’t be getting abused by stupid parents that didn’t want to have them in the first place, I could go on.

  23. Just about the only other thing that might compete in addictions to porn or other things is the competion with others in comment sections, usually resulting in exposing one’s self as a bigger azzhole than the next one.
I have even been dissed for stating this elsewhere as can be expected to occur here.

  24. “”Krueger says. “I would argue for the same sort of hit rate with exposure
to Internet pornography, that most people would do it and it won’t
    become a problem.””"
What a f&&king d&&mb $$hole this Krueger is. HELLO SH**THEAD — THE HUMAN BRAIN is setup for one thing: SEX. Alcohol or other addictions that are tested on F&&KING Mice might have this 10% characteristic in common but this one is different, do you think its the same? THIS IS THE UNIVERSAL characteristic that makes humans different. And, guess what, everyone of our parents tried sex, and liked it, and did it alot. did they all try alcohol? cocaine? Now don’t try to distinguish sex from porn, because the reason the internet works is because porn is super sex, as far as the brains are concerned. anyhow, wake the f up your DSM attitutde is antiquated welcome to the new crowd sourced world. Comments like Krueger’s are sucking society down a dark google-driven path (they are pimps, selling p mostly) please snap out of it and recognize your responsibilities and sound a responsible, well-informed alarm.

  25. Here’s one for you: Masturbation is good for the male prostate gland and can lead to a decrease in prostate cancer in men.

    • Actually this is a medically proven fact. Anyone interested can Google it.

  26. What an incredibly stupid story. As if anyone cares a whit. But the “from Oklahoma” right at the beginning says it all.

  27. What no one seems to have pointed out is that today many men over 40 have problems with erection. It’s not funny when you have a woman in bed, but can’t perform. Sure you can take a Viagra, but then you have to wait an hour or so before it works. For men with such erectile problems, masturbation becomes almost a necessity since it does not require a full erection to achieve orgasm.

  28. I have a sneaking suspicion that “fapping” is related to related to graffiti tagging. Both are clandestine activities that are ego-generated without the slightest regard for consequences. In short, narcissistic.

    • If you think masterbation is narcissistic, then you’re obviously a complete moron.

  29. I wasn’t born before porn, but I was born before the internet, and in public school’s sex education we were taught a male thinks about sex every seven seconds. I’m pretty sure without porn guys (and girls) would still think about sex. Some would even say its what keeps our species going. I think going back to the dark ages, might appease any God you think frowns on touching yourself, but it would also be a major set back for the equality of the sexes, as well as, hugely detrimental to the practice of sex, safe sex, and consenting sex overall. If guys have to stop masturbating, then we need to make all women wear some sort of coverall that ensure we’re never exposed to the hint of a curve.

  30. I am a new member of noFap. I am 57 years old and have looked at magazines since I was 15. having dial up made it almost impossible to do a serious porn search. WIth high speed I have spent up to 4 hours a day during winter months. I have had depression issues and a sleep disorder for 20 years. My relationship with my wife is volatile and my work is high stress. This would have me whacking off late into the middle of the night. Like any addiction anything that interfere with your life or job is not good. I have been fighting ED for the past 4 years and lately even viagra hasn’t allowed me to finish. I accidentally found noFap when I googled “viagra not working”. They propose that long term hardcore pornography desensitizes your dopamine receptors. They condone restraining yourself from masturbation and watching porn. They even encourage you to not have relations end with an organism until you find your brain has healed. I arguing with myself about the validity to this belief but I find myself to be a classic porn addict with all the signs. If for no other reasons I would like to quit exploiting the woman who belong to this industry and put my energy towards the life I wish I had. I think the desensitization of society goes to many levels not just porn.

  31. Anyone who doesn’t believe that porn is an epidemic thanks to its easy access on the internet is living with their head in the sand. Most people who say porn is harmless are either too lazy to look at what is happening to men around them or concerned that light is being shed on their own porn proclivities.

http://www.quitporngetgirls.com covers all the harm porn is doing to to society today.
