Jean Béliveau—the hockey icon who passed away Tuesday at the age of 83—led a remarkable life, even if you subtract the ecstasy and glory of his on-ice career: his 507 goals, his 10 Stanley Cup rings, his Hall of Fame induction. He was, after all, recommended as a potential governor-general, and was a valued executive on seven Cup-winning Montreal Canadiens teams; his junior career was so incredible it inspired the Canadiens to purchase the entire league he was playing in to ensure they owned his rights. We remember the varied life of the man they nicknamed ‘Le Gros Bill.’
