Monument to Bureaucracy

So for about three years now Jason Kenney has been championing this proposal to build in Ottawa a monument to the victims of communism. But some members of the committee debating the issue worried that it would offend the countless Canadians who identify as communists. So the title was changed to “the victims of totalitarian communism.” That’s when the committee really put their brains to work:

Board member Adel Ayad said the name was troubling for its “very tight definition” and for the presence of the word “communism” in the title, as Canada has a communist party.

Some Pucks… Some Head!

Advertisers, meanwhile, said anyone who thinks the disputed “Hockey Night in Canada” theme song has much monetary value outside of the CBC-TV broadcast has taken too many pucks to the head. —  Canadian Press, three days ago.

Can this really be true? Can the CBC really be dropping the theme song to Hockey Night in Canada? The song that connects generations of hockey-loving Canadians… the song that has for decades been sung, howled, screeched and otherwise emitted by kids playing hockey on rinks, ponds and roads… the only song I know to which I don’t embarrass myself by getting the lyrics wrong.
