A special reception was held on the Hill to mark the beginning of Black History Month. This year marked the 150th anniversary of William Hall receiving the Victoria Cross. He was the first black person, first Nova Scotian, and first Canadian sailor to receive the award. A special stamp was unveiled to honour Hall.
Senate Speaker Noël Kinsella and House Speaker Peter Milliken hosted a reception at The Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat for the Quilt of Belonging, a 36-metre by 3.5-metre tapestry that portrays all the First Peoples of Canada and every nation of the world.
National Inuit Leader Mary Simon, below, and her organization Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) kicked off their “2010: Year of the Inuit” initiative with a special reception in Peter Milliken’s dining room.
