Avatar = Another Cartoon Besides “The Smurfs”

The similarities between Avatar and Pocahontas have been much noted. (One difference: Jeff Katzenberg’s decision to make Pocahontas a mostly-humourless guilt fantasy paved the way for the collapse of Disney’s short-lived animation revival, gave political correctness a bad name, and didn’t get Katzenberg anywhere near the Oscar he was gunning for. James Cameron made almost the same story, and it was a big hit and got him a bunch of Oscar nominations. Proving once again that whatever you want to say about Cameron, he knows how to make this stuff work for him.) But there haven’t been many good videos demonstrating the similarities, until now: Randy Szuch decided to take the Avatar trailer and replace all the characters with their non-3D originals.

  1. Huh, I always thought Fern Gully was the best comp.

  2. I first thought of Princess Mononoke (especially because of the glowing spirit things). I'm surprised that comparison wasn't made more.
