Online tormentors don’t discriminate by age. Amanda Shendruk breaks down the numbers

Cyberbullying isn’t just a problem for kids. Online tormentors don’t discriminate by age: On average, seven per cent of Canadian adults have experienced some form of cyberbullying. Our graphic below uses data from Statistics Canada to provide a more detailed look at the who, what, and where (but unfortunately not the why) of online bullying:

Cyberbullying and its victims

  1. Covers a lot of comments sent to me right on this site, and it’s an attempt at intimidation….which is why I tell people to sod off.

    • That’s an unusual expression there Emily.
Makes you sound like an old Marxist rabble rouser from over ome.

  2. this does not mesh with our experience as the oldest and largest cybersafety help group. “Cyberbullying” is a term limited to minors. “Cyberharassment” is used for adults. Most cyberharassment is committed by former friends, former employees, former bosses, rejected lovers, people with a political or emotional ax to grind.
We do not agree with the income issues either.
If we are going to address cyberharassment or adults or cyberbullying of minors, we need accurate information.
On November 9, 2013 in Charlottetown, PEI we are hosting the International Stop Cyberbullying Youth Summit with multi-stakeholders to create an action plan on cyberbullying. The industry leaders are attending, along with leading experts in the field and 400 students.
We will follow this with one on cyberharassment.

  3. People should be aware that ‘Mordant_Malovsky’ posts the same type of comments all over the web….about everybody.

He also goes by more than one name, since he’s often banned, but today you can google him under his current name.

JimV is just another Con shill.

    • “……..People should be aware that ‘Mordant_Malovsky’ posts the same type of comments all over the web….about everybody……”

Replace “Mordant_Malovsky” with “EmilyOne” and what do you get?

      • You get EmilyOne of course.

        Have you attempted 1+1 yet?

        • 10

      • Cyberbully….her comments are so ridiculous I use them to demonstrate to the kids how cyberbullies are just like real bullies don’t have a clue and are just bulling to make themselves feel important….try to find a thread where she doesn’t start using insults when she can’t prove her point.

        • The only people who attack me personally….or complain about me…are rightwingers.

Rightwingers don’t like people who disagree with them. But since they are anti-intellectual, anti-science, anti-women, anti…..etc….one just has to. LOL

          • So that’s why you attack yourself…you’re what you call a rightwinger. Continue your cyberbullying attack on yourself…maybe you will win one day.

Provides good humor to those of us on the left that really understand the problems in Canada and why we don’t vote PC. But I understand now..your posts that are anti-intellectual, anti-science, anti-women is an attempt to convince people to vote for the PC by making them think your are liberal or ndp…too bad we didn’t fall for it.

          • Jim you have totally embarrassed yourself and your party today….don’t make it any worse.

Go have dinner, watch the telly, chillaxe.

          • I think the liberal party can survive your disapproval.

          • Again, you’re embarrassing yourself. I said nothing about disapproving of the Libs….oh wait, have you switched parties again? Hard to keep up with your ‘loyalties’.

          • You really need to stop trying to bully everyone on here. You really need to seek professional help. We are not intimidated by you, we all feel sorry for your limited inability to find a place in this world.

          • Strange… at various times you have (falsely) accused me of all of those things – often while simultaneously calling me left-wing…

Face it, Em – if someone disagrees with you, rather than having a reasonable discussion you assume the problem must be with THEM – because Almighty Emily is never wrong. And so the name-calling and scurrilous accusations begin.

And when they then return the “favour”, it’s time to ciao down…

Take yourself up to 7,763 and give us a few names Emily

  5. People should be aware that our dear friend EmilyOne is the epitome of cyberbully.
And I for one am very fortunate for having observed her.

    To wit:

    (rolls eyes)
    Ciao!

  6. Amazing….most of you are still playing at silly buggers on here and attacking ‘Emily’ personally…instead of discussing topics.

What part of this article didn’t you understand?

    • Look Emily, speaking for just me, if I come here to this forum to read the story and see a stupid remark, I’ll point it out if it’s belligerent but not usually otherwise.

And these belligerent ones aren’t hard to find, you’ve posted 7,762 of them yourself.

But to me, and to most others here, there are no persons to attack personally. I can’t attack you personally Emily, I don’t even know WTF you are. For all I know you could be a computer program or you could be some old out-house dog that Warren Kinsella sent out for a typing course.

So, if you’re seeing people here, and I guess you are, that can only be the manifestation of a serious mental illness because the rest of us only see the stupid comment and the stage name some yahoo made up for himself.

Now it’s pretty well known that left wing goobers hold the opinion that everyone else in the world has the same personality defects they have themselves, so they’re always accusing others of crazy things. It has a psychological term it’s called “Projection” and I think your doctor can find you some cheap medicine to fight it.

So why don’t you pick up some medicine, change your stage name and start over fresh. If you try that don’t use the name EmilyTwo because we’ll likely catch on right away and you’ll just be shooting yourself in the foot.

  7. I wonder how aware people are aware of the cyber bullying children are exposed to, right in their schools, as part of using Wikipedia? Every wikipedia article has a talk page where users can discuss article content, and on many of these pages are extreme uses of profanity and very harsh verbal attacks that our children are exposed to as part of daily access form their schools. When I pointed it out to my daughter’s teacher and principle, they were so shocked that they’re now trying to ban Wikipedia from access by school computers. Has anyone else seen or dealt with this?

  8. My only child passed by “PEER ABUSE DRIVEN BULLYCIDE.” And the only way this dire problem of Peer Abuse/Cyber-harassment will be curbed is if we start using the correct terminology. Cyber harassment should be used for minors as well as adults. Extreme peer abuse causes horrific consequences. The term “Bully” has old attachments which do not explain the pain, the extreme physical, emotional, verbal and cyber abuse our children and teenagers are experiencing. Why should minors-our youngest citizens be left out the legal terms which would ensure they are protected. Cyber-harassment should be used for all targets in every age bracket. I also do not believe the income issues either. Every socio economic group has their abusers. My daughter’s initial tormentors were in one of the highest income brackets.
