Hopefully his sense of humour remains intact

Hopefully his sense of humour remains intact

  1. OK, kudos for Jack for being so self-deprecating back at the Press Gallery dinner in 2005, but today, with the NDP propping up the Conservatives a few minutes ago, I just can't help but think he was serious back then and laying out the NDP blueprint for action under a Conservative government.

Here are the full lyrics. Enjoy:

  2. {Jack's profanity now removed}

    Party for sale or rent
    We'll support any government
No principles, no guts, no spine
No tape recorders when we dine.
Make us an offer we can't refuse
Anything to get me in the news
You need bills approved so let's move…
    Make me a deal!

When just a boy my dad said "Jack,
Sell the shirt right off your momma's back
    Compromise your leftwing a*s
If it can make a juicy budget pass"
So Conservatives or Bloc or Grits
You all give me the screaming s**ts
But I'll be your crutch in the clutch…
    Make me a deal!

Billions and billions and billions of dollars dumped
And all we get in the polls is a 2 point bump
Even when we doubled our popular vote
All we got was 5 more seats on our boat.
So party for sale or rent
It's as close to power as I'll ever get.
We're not proud so shout it out loud:
    Make me any damn deal!

  3. Awesome. Thank you so much for posting this. Second song was not as entertaining but I was howling at the first one and the Barenaked Ladies rip off. My esteem for Jack just went up a couple of notches.

Did he actually say "I'd look a little less Toronto Gay"? Man, was he ever out of character…

  4. Camaraderie, humor, and humility. Come to think of it, if they acted the way they do at the Press Gallery dinner all year, we'd all be much better off.

  5. Layton's a great guy; reminds me of Picard in many ways.

  6. Ha! I had completely forgotten about this. Thanks for posting to it Aaron.

I remember watching that night and thinking "I didn't think Jack had it in 'em." Could you imagine Iggy or Harper like this? Acting all, you know, human that is?

  8. It is hard not to like Jack.

  9. Contrast this light hearted lullaby with a sad and pathetic air guitar performance by Paul Martin during the 2006 campaign: http://tiny.cc/kGyLk

The Liberal war room obviously has no sense of irony in shopping this round…How easily they forget the $4.6 billion Layton got for Canadians by re-writing Paul Martin's 2005 Budget.

  10. The Press Gallery Dinner is an opportunity for those living Inside the Queensway to see the party leaders sending themselves up and have a good laugh. It's not appropriate to make political hay out of this.
