Introducing your new Hockey Night theme…

Dodged a bullet here, as far as I’m concerned. There were countless thousands of entries a lot worse than this one. Over time I think audiences could even grow fond of it.

Introducing your new Hockey Night theme…

  1. Credit where credit’s due – it’s pretty good.

(But my ears *still* treat it as kind of an intro piece – something that’ll segue into the *real* theme at any second. Sigh…)

  2. I liked it. Can’t say the same about the shellacking the Leafs are taking tonight though. Help us Obi-Wan Sundin. You’re our only hope.

  3. It is definitely hummable. My kids dum-da-dum it when they are playing road hockey – and that’s the real test of a HNIC theme.

  4. Don’t like it. Time MIGHT change that. but I just don’t like it. I agree there were worse. But there were CERTAINLY better.

  5. I’d like to think whoever had to sift through the entries in their entirety is getting the Order of Canada

  6. It is certainly okay.

  7. Listening to it independently, it’s actually quite good; not nearly as cliché as some of the other semifinalists, that’s for sure – to say nothing of the other entries in the pile. As presented on the contest website, it feels like a poor match for the video. Once they recut the HNIC opening montage to fit the music, we’ll be accustomed to it in a jiff.

  8. For me it sounds like a combination of some highland games music and the theme song from ‘Dallas’. I think it was the best song of the five finalists.

  9. I think the other finalist anthem by the 13-year old boy is much better – brings back memories of the original Battlestar Galactica. And that’s what HNIC should remind one of!

  10. Strikes me as a celtic Abba cover band. Personally I want something with a bit more gusto.

  11. Just heard it for the first time right this minute. First impressions….not too spectacular….not too horrible. In other words, perfectly Canadian; a tolerable compromise. But it will take some time to get used to it, though I agree with kayorsonsweaver. I expected something with a little more gusto or bravado.

And dangit all, I still can’t believe that the composer of the traditional piece, the old piece, still seems to thing her song MADE Hockey Night in Canada and not the other way around.

  12. I was living in england when they changed theme tune to show called Match Of The Day, which showed highlights from the day’s soccer matches every Sat night, and people were not happy. It was 40 year old theme and people were still grumbling about the change 5 years later.

I would argue HNIC and the old theme song were part of the Canadian identity and I think CBC is going to have bad karma for an awful long time for letting this happen.

  13. I have to admit that I was pretty annoyed at the Communist Broadcorping Castration for dropping the old theme and more than just a little sceptical at the idea of running a contest for a new theme. But I’m lovin’ the Celtic flavour of this tune, I think it’s appropriate to both the game and our heritage as Canadians.

  14. Hmmmmm.

Actually, of the top two entries, I like ’em both.  Why not just alternate them? — genius of the ‘and’ rather than the tyranny of the ‘or’ and all that…

  15. It’s got a good beat and I can bug out to it. I give it a 42.

  16. If you close your eyes and listen, it sounds a lot like the opening theme to an 80’s action show, CBC style. Picture the A-team with Lorne Greene at the head and you’re nearly there.

  17. Bagpipe players nationwide are celebrating tonight, I’ll betcha!

    I like it!

  18. They’re all at the Celtic Colours Festival in Cape Breton, Jack.

  19. Like the start, but it made me think start humming, “we’re going to make it afterall” in the middle segment.

    The bagpipes rock!

  20. I don’t like it! What was wrong with the one we had?? When you turned on the tv and the old hockey anthem came on, it just screamed out “CANADIAN HOCKEY”. Now, this new anthem doesn’t do anything. Whoever decided we needed a new anthem is an idiot!. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it!
