The explanation being that since Michael has been working on the film for most of the series, departed characters like Karen, Roy and Jan can appear in it. On a slightly meta level it could also be read as a commentary on the question people have been asking ever since the U.S. version started: how can someone be shooting a documentary on these characters that still hasn’t been released after seven years? Well, sometimes it just takes a long time to make a film.
