LONDON — Prince Charles says climate change is partly responsible for Syria’s civil war and the chaos it has unleashed.

The heir to the British throne says climate change is causing drought, conflict over resources and mass migrations.

He told Sky News that “one of the major reasons for this horror in Syria” is a years-long drought which meant that “huge numbers of people” had to leave. He said climate change had a “huge impact” on conflict and extremism.

Syria’s four-year civil war has killed 250,000 people, displaced millions and helped the Islamic State group gain territory.

Charles’ interview, broadcast on Monday, was recorded before the Paris attacks on Nov. 13, claimed by IS, that killed 130 people.

Charles is due to address a global climate conference in Paris next week.

  1. That hypothesis has been documented for almost two years now, so I would think Prince Charles’s saying it is a reflection of his ability to read and comprehend.

It was most clearly enunciated by William R. Polk, as US State Department veteran in an article in the Atlantic. It must be said, his background research is well done and the argument has a lot of merit.

  2. I think Prince Charles is absolutely correct about Climate Change causing Mid-East strife! Even though there’s not one single iota of actual EVIDENCE that proves causality between the two events, just think about it for a second and use common sense. Climate Change has been continuously occurring during the entire thousands of years of continuous strife in the Mid-East. And while one might think that the thousands of years of strife have been causing Climate Change, that would be silly, so therefore the only other possible logical conclusion is that Climate Change must be causing the strife. Q.E.D.

  3. Chuck is right of course, water wars aren’t going to help the situation, but they didn’t start the mess.
We have always had climate change, but this time, it’s very fast and very big due to our GHG.
